Mathematics Prayer

Dear God,
May we through your blessings, add
purity to the world, subtract evil from our
lives, multiply the good news of your son, and
divide your gifts and share them with others.
Amen.

Lesson 7: The Rectangular
Coordinate System
Objectives:
Illustrates
the rectangular coordinate system and its
uses. (M8AL-Ie-1)
Rectangular Coordinate System
 Alsocalled Cartesian
Coordinate System.
 French mathematician Rene
Descartes (1596 – 1650) who
is known as the “Father of
Modern Mathematics”, came
up with this idea of his
coordinate system, the
Cartesian Plane.
Parts of the Cartesian Plane
 The Cartesian Plane is composed
of two perpendicular number
lines that meet at the point of (+,+) Origin (0,0)
origin (0, 0) and divide the plane (-,+)
into four regions called
Quadrants.
 The Quadrants are labeled
and starting from the upper
right of the plane going
counterclockwise.
(-,-) (+,-)
Coordinates (x,y)
 It is composed of infinitely
many points. Each point in the
coordinate system is defined by (+,+) Origin (0,0)
(-,+)
an ordered pair of the form .
• The 1st coordinate of the points (-3,1) (3,1)
is called the x – coordinate or
abscissa and the 2nd coordinate
(-3,-1) (3,-1)
is called the y – coordinate or
ordinate.
