ACTIVITY 1

1.1 Basic hygiene principles

 cleaning your body every day


 washing your hands with soap after going to the toilet
 brushing your teeth twice a day
 covering your mouth and nose with a tissue (or your sleeve)
when sneezing or coughing
 washing your hands after handling pets and other animals

In term 1, you learned about the learning styles as the different ways in which
people’s brain take in, absorb, comprehend, understand, process, retain, stores and
remember skills and information to learn.

1.2. Identify your dominant learning style and describe how you will apply it in your
school work.

 My dominant learning style is aural

1.3. What do you understand by “self-management skills”?

 Self-management skills are the abilities that allow people to control their
thoughts, feelings & actuations

Sub-topic : Six career categories: investigative, enterprising, realistic, artistic,
conventional and social.

Career categories are a group of jobs. Careers can be grouped in a number of ways
according to what they have in common. All careers need the individual strength,
ability, interests, passion, thinking and learning skills There are six career categories.
Interests are things are you like to do. Abilities are natural talents or the things you
are able to do easily. Learning and thinking skills are often called the 4Cs: Critical
thinking (the careful study of something to better understand it); Creative thinking
(looking at things in a different way from others); communicating (the sharing of
ideas) and collaborating (working together with others to achieve something). These
skills help people to learn and they also relate to the skills needed for each category.

2.1. Copy the table below in your activity book; and write the different career
categories, interests and abilities related to each category, thinking and learning
skills required for each category, and subjects related to each category. Be as
elaborate as possible.

2.2. Identify the career categories for essential workers and provide reasons why you
regard these career categories related to essential workers.
 Social category is for essential workers, nurses, doctors, police,
emergency services play a key role in times of crises as they are pillars
of strength in shaky situations.
 Enterprising category are your sales managers for groceries, petrol
attendances as they provide basic services to communities
 Essential workers include health care, food service, and public
transportation, among others

2.3 Identify needs in the community and country

2.4. How work can meet social and economic needs in South Africa?

 The most important task in fixing Eskom is to install an efficient and

TOPIC: Health and social and environmental responsibility

Sub-topic : Social factors that contribute to substance abuse including community


and media.

3.1. Discuss the social factors that contribute to substance abuse including the
family, community and media.
 Family-some children drink because they are neglected, they are not taken
care of.
 Communities- they battle with a number of illegal shebeens which add to the
problem of alcohol abuse.
 Media- portray wrong messages about drugs & alcohol being fun & cool.

3.2. Write strategies you would use to use avoid using substances when offered by
your friends.
 Knowing appropriate behaviour or action to stop or Avoid substance abuse is
refusal & decision making skills:
 Boundaries: know where to set your boundaries. Agree with others to respect
each other’s boundaries & still be friends.
 Context: evaluate your surroundings to see where you are at the moment &
with who you with.
 Do the right things: go out & do something healthy, work on a well-balanced
life.

3.3. How do you support your friends or family member for rehabilitation
programme?
 Give encouraging phone calls.
 Send cards, text message & care packages.
 Educate yourself on the nature of addiction.
 Help take care of things at home when possible.
 Never call them while under the influence of alcohol /drugs.
 Show compassion & don’t be discouraging.
 Understand that the recovery process will have its ups and downs.
 Speak with staff on what follow up discharge instructions the person has.
 Let them know how proud you are of them for the hard work they are doing.
 If possible, attend their program graduation ceremony.

3.4. Why do you think support is important for a person who went for
rehabilitation?
Rehabilitation is care that can help you get back, keep or improve abilities that
you need for daily life. These abilities may be physical, mental or cognitive
(thinking & learning). You may have lost them because of a disease or injury or
as side effect from a medical treatment.
3.5 Provide places where to find help for people in substance abuse and the

 3.6. What type of substances are abused by people in your community and
why?

 Alcohol is by far the major substance of abuse, while weed is still the most
common illicit drug used, especially among youths attending treatment
centres.
 Tic & nywupe is also the primary source of substance abuse.

3.7. Explain how did you get to know about them.


 Seeing them in taverns, shebeens, clubs, social media like Facebook, tiktok,
twitter, Instagram.
3.8. In your way/approach how do you think they can be assisted to do away with
substance abuse.
 Substance awareness campaign wherein the negative effects of substances
will be highlighted might deter some people from using substances
3.9. Critically evaluate the short and long consequences of substance abuse; refer to
its link to crime, violence and educational outcomes.
 Abusing, buying or selling illegal drugs is a crime. Selling alcohol to people
under the age of 18 is also a crime.
 A strong link between substance abuse & a range of crimes. For example,
many young men found guilty of gender-based violence such as domestic
abuse & rape were drunk or high when they committed these crimes. Many
women have been raped or beaten while they were drunk or high.
