Dr Kim Trust Fund

The Dr Kim Trust Fund expands membership of the


International Hospital Federation (IHF), sponsors
participants in the Young Executive Leaders
programme, supports the Dr Kwang Tae Kim Grand
Hospital Award, strengthens the IHF’s long-term
financial position, and develops other worthwhile
programmes across the organization.
Membership grants for hospitals and hospital
associations in low income and lower-middle
income countries
Established in 2021, the Dr Kwang Tae Kim Trust Fund supports new
members of the IHF in low income and lower-middle income countries.

Who can apply for a membership grant?


Hospitals and hospital associations in low income and lower-middle income
countries (according to World Bank classification) can apply for a grant.

What does a membership grant cover?


A grant from the Trust Fund sponsors an organization for two consecutive
years. Each year, the grant will cover:

the organization’s annual IHF membership fees


two complimentary registrations for the organization’s
representatives to attend the IHF World Hospital Congress
access to all benefits related to IHF Full membership.

Additional financial support may be provided upon request (and subject


to approval by the IHF Executive Committee in consultation with the IHF
Audit and Finance Committee).

How can I apply for a membership grant?


If your organization is eligible and you are interested in applying for a
grant, email: ihf.secretariat@ihf-fih.org
The grant application involves a letter of interest and application form,
which will be reviewed through an evaluation process.
In a letter of interest, the candidates will demonstrate their
motivations to engage as IHF members in the long term, and how
becoming IHF members will related to their organization’s
meaningful mission.
The application form will be reviewed by the IHF Secretariat and
submitted to the IHF Executive Committee for consideration.
Applications will be evaluated by the IHF Executive Committee and
selected based on the strength of the application and available
funds.
The applicant will be kept informed of the approval status and the
sponsorship process.
Sponsorship for participants in the IHF’s
Young Executive Leaders programme
To support the development of aspiring healthcare leaders, the Dr Kim
Trust Fund sponsors participation in the IHF's Young Executive Leaders
(YEL) programme for applicants in low income and lower-middle
income countries.

Who can apply for YEL sponsorship?


Anyone who is eligible for the YEL programme and who is from a low
income and lower-middle income country (according to World Bank
classification) can request sponsorship during the application process.

What does YEL sponsorship cover?


Sponsorship includes access to valuable networking opportunities, such
as attendance at the World Hospital Congress.

How can I apply for YEL sponsorship?


Requests for sponsorship are part of the application process to
participate in the annual Young Executive Leaders programme.

Participation in the Young Executive Leaders programme is made on the


programme’s selection criteria. The awards of sponsorship for
participants in the programme are based on eligibility, the merits of the
request, and the available funds.

Grants and sponsorship in 2022

The International Hospital Federation welcomed four new members in 2022,


through grants by the Dr Kim Trust Fund.

Amiri Medical Centre, Afghanistan


Private hospital in Kabul providing high quality,
efficient, and sustainable healthcare services to all
in the community. AMC is an IHF Associate Member
since 2021.
Indian Hospital Association Vadodara, India
Not-for-profit organization managing a range of
training programmes and activities in various areas
of hospital and healthcare service management in
India.
Kindoya Hospital, Sierra Leone
Private sector hospital serving rural heartland
populations in Sierra Leone, with a well-established
corporate social responsibility reach, especially
supporting HIV care, young children, and maternity.
Zambia Association of Private Hospitals, Zambia
Non-profit organization promoting and protecting
the development and maintenance of high
standards of private health hospitals and their staff
throughout Zambia.

Thanks to the Dr Kwang Tae Kim Trust Fund and the Jackson Healthcare
Foundation, six participants were sponsored to attend the World
Hospital Congress in 2022.

About the Dr Kim Trust Fund
Governance and management
The Trust Fund is managed by the IHF Secretariat and overseen by the
IHF Executive Committee.

About Dr Kim
Dr Kwang Tae Kim is a surgeon and immense
contributor to the healthcare sector, both
nationally and internationally. He was President
of the International Hospital Federation from
2013 to 2015, President of the Asian Hospital
Federation from 2008 to 2009, and President
of the Korean Hospital Association from 2003
to 2004. He has been the Chairman of his own
hospital, Daerim Saint Mary’s Hospital, in Seoul
(Republic of Korea) since 1969.

As a strong advocate of excellence in clinical governance, leadership,


quality and safety, and a lifetime Honorary Member of the IHF, Dr Kim
generously donated to the IHF to set up the IHF Awards in 2015, and the
Dr Kim Trust Fund in 2021.

TERMS OF REFERENCE
Dr. Kwang Tae Kim Trust Fund
1. Background
1.1 Through a generous donation from Dr. Kwang Tae Kim, former President and
serving Honorary Member, the International Hospital Federation (IHF) set up
the Dr Kwang Tae Kim Trust Fund (hereafter referred to as the Trust Fund) in
August 2021.
1.2 The Trust Fund will support several IHF activities, including a grant process to
cover the membership fees for the initial two years for IHF members from low-
income and lower middle-income countries.
2. Eligible candidates for the Trust Fund’s Membership Grant
2.1 Eligible candidates to the Trust Fund’s membership grant should be eligible
IHF Full Members from low- and lower middle- income countries, according to
the World Bank classification.
2.2 According to the IHF Constitution, Full membership is open to any association
or organizational body deemed representative of the healthcare organizations,
in particular but not exclusively hospitals, in a country, region or territory.
3. Scope of the IHF Membership Grant
3.1 The Trust Fund will sponsor an organization for two consecutive years. Each
year, the grant provided will cover the following:
o Annual IHF membership fees;
o Two complimentary registrations for the organization’s representatives to
attend the IHF World Hospital Congress;
o Additional financial support may be provided upon request and subject to
approval by the IHF Executive Committee in consultation with the IHF
Audit and Finance Committee if deemed necessary.
3.2 Additionally, the organization will have access to all benefits related to IHF Full
membership.
4. Expectations from the IHF Members Sponsored by the Trust Fund
4.1 As beneficiaries from the Trust Fund membership grant, the member
organization is expected to allocate sufficient time and human resources for a
successful relationship with the IHF Secretariat, and to actively take part in IHF
activities. This includes:
o Regular contacts with the IHF Secretariat
o Taking part to a session at the IHF World Hospital Congress
o Recruiting a candidate(s) for the Young Executive Leaders’ program
o Participating in other worthwhile IHF activities of interest to the member

5. Grant Application Process
5.1 The application process to benefit from the Trust Fund includes the following
steps:
a. Interested organizations will request more information by contacting the
IHF Secretariat.
b. The IHF Secretariat will give guidelines to apply according to the status
of other Trust Fund’s beneficiaries and available funds.
c. Through a letter of interest, the candidates will demonstrate their
motivations to engage as IHF members on the long term and how
becoming IHF members will related to their organization’s meaningful
mission
d. The application form will be reviewed by the IHF Secretariat and
submitted to the IHF Executive Committee (EC) for consideration.
e. Eligible applicants will be evaluated by the IHF Executive Committee and
selected based on the strength of their application and available funds.
f. The applicant will be kept informed of the approval status and the
sponsorship process will be formalized accordingly.
6. Implementation
6.1 Upon approval of the candidate by the IHF Executive Committee, an
agreement will be signed between the sponsored organization and the IHF,
underlying the terms of the collaboration.
6.2 In order to facilitate the collaboration between the sponsored organization and
the IHF Secretariat, the new IHF Member will designate a person for
administrative issues and communications
