Part B: Hardware

a. Research and list the 5 main hardware components that an operating system manages and
interacts with. For each component, explain its function and how the operating system
utilizes it.

1. CPU : It’s the part that does all the work, like solving problems or opening apps. The
operating system organizes this work so everything runs well.

2. Memory : Think of it as a desk where everything you’re currently working on is laid out.
The operating system makes sure there’s enough space for what you’re doing right now.

3. Storage : This is like a filing cabinet for all your files and programs. The operating system
helps you keep it organized and find things when you need them.

4. Input/Output Devices : These are how you talk to your computer and how it talks back.
The operating system translates your commands into something the computer can
understand and conversely for example keyboards and printers.

5. Networking Hardware : This lets your computer connect to the internet or other
computers like Wi-Fi cards. The operating system manages these connections, making sure
data goes where it’s supposed to.
b. Investigate the concept of device drivers and their role in facilitating communication
between hardware devices and the operating system.

Device drivers are essential because they help your computer communicate effectively with the
devices connected to it. They act as a bridge between the operating system and hardware, like
printers, keyboards, and cameras, ensuring that when the computer sends a command, the device
understands it and responds appropriately. This ensures that all your devices work well with your
computer, providing a smooth and hassle-free experience.

Part C : Software

a. Identify the different types of software that an operating system.

System Software includes the operating system itself, managing the computer’s core functions,
device drivers that help the computer understand external devices, and utility programs for
maintenance tasks. Application Software are the programs you use for specific tasks, like writing
documents, browsing the internet, playing music or videos, engaging in games, educational activities,
or using professional tools for work, such as database management or project planning.

b. Investigate the concept of system calls and their importance in allowing applications to
request services from the operating system.

- Safety : They make sure apps don’t mess with stuff they shouldn’t.
- Ease : They help app makers by doing the hard stuff for them.
- Order : They keep everything running smoothly so apps don’t get in each other’s way.
- Talking : They let apps talk to each other safely.
- Use Anywhere : They help apps work on all kinds of devices without needing changes.

c. Investigate file system management and how operating systems organize and manage files
and directories on storage devices.

- It sorts everything : Just like using different drawers for different kinds of documents, your
computer puts files into folders.
- It remembers where things are : When you save something, your computer picks a spot for it and
remembers it, so you can pull it up whenever you need it.

- It helps you find stuff fast : Whenever you look for a file, your computer knows exactly where to
grab it from.

- You get to label things : You can name your files and folders to help you remember what’s inside
them.

- It keeps your stuff safe : There are built-in locks that make sure only you or people you allow can
see or change your files.
