MATEMÁTICAS − 3º ESO REVIEW UNIT 3: POLYNOMIALS NOTA

Nombre: Grupo:

1. Calculate the numerical values of these polynomials. Are there any roots?
a) P(x) = –x4 – 2x3 – 3x2 + 6 when x = –1 and when x = 1

b) Q(x) = 4x3 + 5x2 – 4x + 4 when x = –2 and when x = 0

2. Use the polynomials A(x) = 2x3 + 7x – 3, B(x) = –2x3 – 4x2 + 5x + 6 and C(x) = x2 – x to calculate the
following:
a) A(x) + B(x)

b) A(x) – B(x)

c) B(x) – C(x)

d) C(x) ∙ B(x)

e) A(x) ∙ A(x)

3. Simplify these expressions:

a) –7 ∙ ( 5x + 1 – 2x2 ) – x ∙ ( 5x – 2x3 ) =

b) ( 3x2 – 2x ) ∙ 4x – ( x – 1 ) ∙ ( 1 – x + x2 ) =

c) –3x + ( x – 1 ) ∙ ( 2 – x ) – ( x – 1 )2 =

4. Find the quotient and remainder when you divide the polynomial P(x) = 2x4 – 3x3 + 9x + 4 by the polynomials
bellow. Write the relationship in the form: P(x) = Q(x) · C(x) + R(x). Is there a divisor of P(x)? What is it and
why?
a) Q(x) = x2 + 2x – 2 b) Q(x) = 2x + 1
