LET’S GO!

4
God's Truth in a World of Lies

The
first lie in the world is found in Genesis. Satan, in the form of a serpent, tempted
Eve to eat the fruit of the tree, which was against God's command. "You will not
die Satan lied. Adam and Eve believed the lie, and sin entered the world. Satan,
the father of lies, affected God's perfect creation forever.

Another story is found in the Book of Acts. Some believers had sold all
their land and possessions, bringing the money to the apostles to give to the
needy in the church. A couple, Ananias and Sapphira, also sold their possessions,
but they decided to keep part of the money for themselves. This was not wrong.

They had every right to do it. However, they wanted people to think they
gave all their money.

The Apostle Peter, who was filled with the power of the Spirit, knew
instantly that Ananias was lying-not just to him but to God-and exposed his sin
then and there. Ananias fell and died. When Sapphira showed up, she, too, lied to
Peter and God, saying that they had donated the entire proceeds of the sale of
the land to the church. When her lie had been exposed, she also fell and died at
Peter's feet.

When you lie, you will probably not drop dead, but it is still the same sin
Ananias and Sapphira did. God's word is clear: lying is a sin. Liars will be punished
because they will not make it to heaven. White lies and small omissions are still
lying. We are not perfect because, by nature, people are sinful. But we should
always strive to live honest, open lives that are pleasing to God.

The Bible: The Book God Gave Us

The Bible is a collection of 66 books divided into the Old Testament and
the New Testament It is also called the Holy Bible because it is the Word of God.

About forty authors-kings and doctors, poets and peasants, fishermen and
tax collectors-were divinely inspired by God to write the Bible. This inspiration is
the reason why the books are united by a common message and the authors do
not contradict one another. Some authors wrote many of the books, some only
few.

The Old and New Testament

New Testament

A testament is a covenant or agreement between two people. The Old and

New Testaments reveal God's original plan for man-how sin entered the world,
and how God reached out to man through the law and the prophets. After Jesus
Christ died for us, He became the only perfect way to God. Jesus is the bond or
link between the Old and the New Testament.

13
Old Testament

 The Old Testament tells the history of the nation Israel.

 It is given to the Jews, also known as the Hebrews or Israelites.
 It was originally written in Hebrew
 It covers the terms of God's relationship with men, from the creation to the
coming of Savior and the establishment of the new covenant.

New Testament

 The New Testament gives the back- ground and the conditions of the new
covenant, which God makes with all who accept His Son, Jesus Christ, as
the Savior.
 It tells the story of the life of Jesus Christ, and also what He teaches.
 It was originally written in Greek the common language at the time of its
writing.

The Bible has been translated into many different languages. It has even taken
the form of eBooks and audio Bibles. God wants all men to hear and read His
Word and gives each one a fair chance to know His purpose.

I Can Benefit from the Bible

How can you claim God's promises in your
life if you do not know what they are?

When you regularly read and study the

Bible, you learn more about God's
promises and commandments. Here are
the benefits of studying the Word of God:

1. Guidance

God's Word opens your eyes and illuminates your life so you can avoid
stumbling. Read Psalm 119:105.

2. Growth

If you love God, you will want to know more about Him. And to know Him better,
you need to love to study the Bible. When you believe what you are studying, you
develop a godly outlook on life.

3. Victory

The Bible gives several resources to help you overcome sin. In this lifetime, you
will never be perfectly victorious over sins, but that should still be your goal. With
God's help, and by following the principles of His Word, you can gradually
overcome sin and become more and more like Christ.

4. Power

The Word of God says that God has given His Word to equip you for every good
work. It teaches you how to live and reveals when you have chosen the wrong
paths. It helps you get back on the right path and keeps you on that path. Read
Hebrews 4:12.

5. God's blessing when you obey

Once you discover what God wants you to do and you do it, you receive His
reward. Among those rewards are peace and joy.

Romans 8:7

LET’S GO!

21
Obedience to God's Word
God doesn't force you to obey Him. But remember, God teaches that
obedience is for your best. And He, as a perfect and all-knowing Father, knows
what is best for you!

Obedience in the Bible could be defined as humble submission to God's

commands. You probably remember many instances when your parents tell you
to do things, which you never followed. Often, your excuse was you didn't hear
them, or you were doing something else important. True obedience is when you
listen to God and then act on His words.

Four Reasons to Obey God

1. It is our duty to obey Him.

We are children of God, and we have to obey His commands. Of course, we do

not obey to be saved. Salvation comes first, and obedience should follow. But
obedience goes deeper than duty. Obedience should come from the heart, done
because we want to, not because we have to but unwillingly.

2. God's commands are for our good.

He loves us and wants to help us. As our Father, He has the wisdom to Know how
we should live and what will work best for us in the long run. we have to trust
Him because His perspective is much better than ours.

3. We obey because we love God.

It is our love for God that causes us to want to obey Him. He has done so much
for us, that we cannot help but want to please Him. "If you love me, Jesus says,
"you will obey what I command.”

4. You serve as a witness to God when you obey.

Obedience shows others that God is great, that He is good, and that we love Him.
Let your good deeds be seen, Jesus said, so people will see them "and praise
your Father in heaven" David Versus Goliath

LET’S GO!

David Versus Goliath

Remember the story of David and Goliath? David was a young man who
had learned how to conquer scary things like lions and bears. But he was just a
boy and wasn't a body builder or skilled soldier. So how was he able to defeat
Goliath? David didn't allow intimidation to stay in his mind and he didn't speak
them out. He knew God was on his side. Instead, in 1 Samuel 17:45,

David said to Goliath, "You come to me using sword, spear, and javelin.
But I come to you in the name of the LORD All-Powerful, the God of the armies of
Israel. You have said bad things about him' David knew he had God and he
trusted what God said He would do for him. Thus, he looked at the Situation
without doubt and fear. He activated his strength to fight the enemy by speaking
about what he wanted to happen. That gave him the courage to step out and
conquer.

The same situation-intimidation, doubt, and fear-happen every day. You

may not be aware of it sometimes because you do not see it coming. The enemy
can attack you so subtly in a way that you may not even notice it. He can throw
lies at you that can make you scared or make you feel inferior. He does this so
you cannot live out what you are called to be: a victorious follower of Jesus and a
doer of His Word.

“MY QUESTIONS”
29
MY FOCUS THIS WEEK

LESSON 1: WHY IS THERE EVIL IN THE WORLD?

MY MAP ON THIS JOURNEY

After this learning journey, you will:

Knowledge Explain why it is evil in the world.

Values Appreciate God’s love and forgiveness.

Skills Summarize what they have learned.

BEFORE I GO

Why is there evil?

What is evil?

MEMORY VERSE

“Don’t let evil defeat you, but defeat evil with GOOD. “
Romans 12:21

30
LET’S GO!

Why is There Evil in The World?

Why is there evil? What is evil?

Even at a time of merry-making, such as

the Christmas season, evil is evident. Business
is big at that time of year, even doubling
because of the incoming New Year. People are
busy shopping, decorating, planning, and
preparing for a feast for family reunions and
get-togethers. Whether you like it or not,
money and gifts become the focus of the
season. In Metro Manila, this is also the season when the crime rate is the highest
because of the money people bring with them to buy food and presents.
Holdups and robberies are the most common incidents of this kind.

Genesis 1:26 records that God created man in His image and His likeness.
However, man's likeness to God did not mean that he was equal to God. The
likeness was that man was created pure and sinless like God. But sin entered the
world when both the woman and the man desired to be like God. Sins are things
in our lives that do not meet God's standards. Sin can be things we do, like lying,
cheating, or stealing. Sin can also be what we think, like jealousy and pride, or
what we say. These sins keep us from having a relationship with God.

Only One was born without sin

and that is Jesus Christ -the Son of
God. God sent Jesus to take the
penalty for our sins. Jesus died on the
cross and took our punishment so that
everyone who believes in Him can get
a fresh start with God. Jesus became
the bridge that connects us to God.
That is the good news. The other good
thing about it is this: God does not
force you to do good things to receive
salvation. You only have to accept
Jesus in your heart if you want His
salvation. The decision is yours.

LESSON 2: WHY DO PEOPLE DIE?

MY MAP ON THIS JOURNEY

After this learning journey, you will:

Knowledge Understand the death is a result of man’s first sin.

Values Value your life.

Skills Understand that there are two kinds of death: physical

and spiritual.

BEFORE I GO

Why Do People Die?

MEMORY VERSE

“Sin pays off with death. But God’s gift eternal life given by Jesus
Christ our Lord. “
Romans 6:23

34
LET’S GO!

Why Do People Die?

In Genesis 3:3, the woman told the serpent that God said she and the man would
surely die when they ate from the forbidden tree. You know from the story that they did
not die, at least not immediately. After they ate the fruit, they even realized that they had
no clothes and felt ashamed. They covered themselves with leaves before they talked
with God.

In the previous lesson, you learned that sin brought death into this world. This
means that the death of a person, as it is with Adam and Eve, comes not only physically
but also spiritually. Physical death is of the body.

Spiritual death is a separation from God. But because of Jesus who died on the cross on
our behalf, we can now spend eternal life with Him in heaven, after living here on earth?

To talk about death is not easy. Sometimes it scares you, doesn't it? Sometimes
you feel sad when someone you hold dear passes from this life to the next because you
know that you will no longer see him or be with him ever again on this earth

That loved one cannot be with you physically anymore. Physical death is a natural
process that all living things go through. No one escapes this reality

Everyone who lives will die at an appointed time.

1. You must deal with death with realism.

Being a faithful Christian doesn't exempt you from death. You can't escape it or
postpone it when it's your time to go. As Christians, we need to view death realistically.
Death brings hard realities.

a. loss and sorrow c. sadness

b. loneliness d. hurt

2. You must deal with death with faith in God's promises.

God's promises do not end with this life. He gives us the hope of His promises.
He has given you hope through faith in Jesus Christ. All you need to do is to believe in
Him and surrender your life to Jesus. He has gone to prepare a place for us. Then, we will
be reunited with our loved ones who have fallen asleep in Jesus!

John 15:7

38
LET’S GO!

Does God Answer Prayer?

The Bible talks about prayer
many times. There are over 400
references to prayer throughout the
Old and New Testaments, but let us
look at just one of them in Matthew
6:9-13.

"Our Father in heaven, help us

to honor Your name." When you pray,
you are in direct conversation with
God. You accept that He is Almighty,
All-Knowing, and Holy. You come
before Him in great respect and adoration.

"Come and set up Your kingdom, so that everyone on earth will obey You as
You are obeyed in heaven." Whatever it is you pray for, it cannot be the opposite
of what God wants. The Bible is clear that the reason prayers are not granted is
because these are not what God wants.

"Give us our food for today." This shows that God wants you to be
dependent on Him for your needs. Today is an important word in this sentence
because you need to depend on God and ask Him daily. It also shows that you
recognize that whatever you need can only be supplied by Him.

“Forgive us for doing wrong, as we forgive others." Jesus has taken the
punishment for your sins at the cross. God gave Jesus to demonstrate His love
and forgiveness. But there can be no forgiveness unless you ask for it. Remember
that God does not hear your prayer if you do not forgive others and keep sin in
your heart.

"Keep us from being tempted and protect us from evil" Self-control can
help you win over temptation. The temptation to eat junk food can be avoided
with discipline or moderation. You need more than just self-will to overcome
temptations. You also need the Holy Spirit to help you resist temptation.

39
The Lord's Prayer is more than Just a prayer you need to memorize and
recite every day. This provides you with the important elements to help you
depend on God more. It tells you that you need to worship God, confess your
sins to Him, thank Him for all He has done, and present your requests to Him.

LET’S GO!

Why are There Rich and Poor

Many Bible characters had interesting
changes in life status. King David was very
rich, but he was poor before he became rich.
Naomi and her family were rich, then they
became poor.

To have wealth or riches is not wrong.

God blesses hard-working people with their
needs such as food, clothes, a house, and
many other things. However, the Bible warns
that the sluggard or the lazy will suffer from
poverty (Proverbs 6:10-11).

There is a lot of inequality in this life.

This world is imperfect because of Sin This imperfection due to sin is the reason
why there are rich and poor.

Not all people are upset because they do not have a lot of money or own
a lot of things. Some are happy and contented. The Bible says that we should be
satisfied just to have food and clothes. People who want to be rich fall into all
sorts of temptations and traps. A person needs only the basic things to survive.
You won't get sick or stop living if you and your family do not have a car, a
mobile phone, or a computer However, when a person is used to having all these,
he or she is likely to forget that these are just bonuses in Life. When deprived of
these luxuries, people often become angry and unhappy. They should be happy
that they still have air to breathe, food to eat, clothes to wear, and a house to live
in, right? And the saddest part is that, when the time comes that people have to
choose between obeying God and keeping the material things, He has blessed
them with, these people who have been given Luxuries are the most hesitant to
give them up for God!

Jesus made this wonderful promise for those who are happy with just
enough in life and are willing to give them up for Him when He said: "God

42
blesses those people who want to obey Him more than to eat or drink. They will
be given what they want' (Matthew 5:6).

Many think that riches can buy everything. But, the rich young man in
Mark 10:19-31 could not follow Jesus because he could not part with his great
wealth. wealth on earth has a subtle way of luring you away from the things that
last and matter to God. Saving up on things that will just rot or be used up is
foolish when you are being offered things that will last beyond a lifetime.

The Bible teaches you not to "store up treasures on earth! Moths and rust
can destroy them, and thieves can break in and steal them. Instead, store up your
treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy them, and thieves
cannot break in and steal them. Your heart will always be where your treasure is."

Say No to Temptation
The phrase "jump on the bandwagon" is so popular nowadays, especially
to young people your age. Your age is the age of curiosity. It means that you are
very eager to try out and learn new things. You want to take on not only things
about school but more so outside of it and the home. You and your friends do
things and share things. If you have a spat with a friend, you feel bad and lonely.
You do not want to be alone. To avoid being alone or without friends, you do
whatever it is they want so they do not leave you out. Sometimes though,
without you realizing it, you just may be "jumping on the bandwagon"

An Israelite judge named Samson jumped on the bandwagon against what

God had commanded him to do and his wrong decision had huge consequences.

Samson Was born due to a very special event. His mother was visited by
an angel and was told that she would have a son. This son would be especially
blessed by God. But they would have to take very good care of him and raise him
as a Nazarite (also called Nazirite). Nazarites were a group of people in Israel
especially set apart for the service of God, and they had very strict rules to follow.

His parents obeyed the angel and made sure that Samson followed all the
Nazarite rules. Samson grew up without his hair being cut even once, not
drinking wine, and not going near a dead body. While his hair remained uncut,

47
God gave him incredible strength that Samson used to defeat enemies. He was
Israel's very own superman!

However, when Samson was all grown up, he began to have friends who
did not have a good influence on him. They took Samson with them and
introduced him to the bad company from Israel’s enemy countries.

Because he followed what his

bad friends did, Samson broke all the
rules that he should have followed. He
ate honey that he found inside the
dead body of a lion, became drunk with
wine, and in the end had his hair cut by
an enemy woman while he was
sleeping. Sadly, when Samson woke, all
his amazing strength was gone. His
enemies took the chance to capture,
blind, and throw into jail the former
superman of Israel.

However, while in prison,

Samson's hair grew longer and longer.
He felt sorry and repented of his
disobedience to God. One day, during a feast in an enemy temple, Samson was
brought out bound in chains for the enemies to taunt and laugh at. The blind
Samson was placed between two stone posts that held up the roof. Placing his
hands on the posts, he prayed to God to give him back his strength for the last
time so that he could defeat Israel's enemies once and for all.

God granted his prayer. Pushing the posts apart with all his strength, the
powerful Samson toppled the columns and destroyed not only the temple but all
the enemies inside it. Sadly, Samson had to sacrifice his life to give Israel this
stunning victory with God's power giving him strength.

Genesis 37-41 tells Joseph’s story up to the part when Pharaoh said to
him, 7 hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt" (Genesis 41:41). That
was a glorious day for him, a day of triumph!

Even before his greatness in

Egypt, he led a privileged life because
he was his father's favorite son. He was
the only one for whom his father made
a brightly-colored robe. He was the
apple of his father’s eye. He also had a
gift for interpreting the meaning of
dreams which brought him greatness
but also caused his separation from his
family and all the misery he
experienced after that.

While still in Canaan, he dreamed that he would be greater than hers. At

one time, he dreamed of all his family, even his parents, bowing down to him.
This made his brothers hate him all the more. They sold him to save traders who,
in turn, sold him to the house of Potiphar. But God had a plan for Joseph and His
favor was upon him even in his trials. Potiphar, who was one of the officials of
Pharaoh, was pleased with him and made him in charge of all in his household.
But Potiphar’s wife then accused the handsome Joseph and he was jailed. After
years in prison, he admitted before Pharaoh that he had the gift of interpreting
dreams. Pharaoh, the king of
Egypt, recognized the power of
God at work in Joseph, and His
revelation brought the story to

Have you encountered a bully? A bully is someone cruel and means to
others. In school, some students tend to bully weaker students by forcing them to
do a task with a threat to cause harm or continue ridiculing them if they refuse.
However, kids who bully others are often those who have experienced problems
at home.

In the Bible, a man named Saul

was anointed king of Israel. King Saul
rejected God's Word and chose to do
things his way. God was sorry that He
made him king. Samuel the prophet,
upon God's instruction, sought a new
king and anointed David, the son of
Jesse David was about 18 years old
then and did not immediately go to
the palace as king, but as a harp-
player who would play to make King
Saul feel better when a bad spirit
troubled him.

Not too long after Samuel anointed David as king, his brothers were called
into the army to fight against the Philistines. They were at a standstill when
Goliath challenged, "Choose a man to fight me. If he kills me, we will be your
servants; but if kill him, you will be our servants" (Samuel 17:9). David, who was
there to bring food to his brothers, heard M this. He was angered at the
intimidation of God's armies and he took the challenge.

Armed with a sling and five stones, he defeated Goliath with one stone
that Sunk in the giant's forehead. Saul then placed him in charge of the armies.
They were met with chants of "Saul killed his thousands, but David has Killed is
ten thousand, that made Saul very Jealous of David.

Saul knew that the Lord was now with David and not with him so he
wanted to kill David. David had to go into hiding but Saul still pursued him.

Three Courageous Hebrews

Was there ever a time when you had to suffer for doing good! The three
Hebrews in today's story experienced just that.

Babylon defeated Jerusalem and took its people as prisoners.

Nebuchadnezzar chose healthy, fit, handsome, and intelligent young men among
the Hebrews to serve in the king's palace. He had his servant Ashpenaz train
them for work in Babylon's government.

Daniel and his friends, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego asked for beans
and water for their food instead of meat and wine. They told Ashpenaz that they
did not want to sin against God by eating food that had been offered to idols.
Ashpenaz agreed on the condition that if they looked as healthy as the others
after 10 days, they would continue. At the end of 10 days, they looked better,
healthier, and did better in their studies than all the other young men in training.
The four got key positions in government-Daniel at the palace and the three in
the provinces of Babylon.

After many years, King

Nebuchadnezzar decided to make an
image of gold and set it up on a plain in
the province of Babylon. He then called
on all the government officials to come
to the dedication. He gave a command
that when music played all must bow
down and worship the image and
anyone who did not would be thrown
immediately into a fiery furnace.
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
disobeyed, which made King

61
Nebuchadnezzar furious. "Can your God deliver you out of my hands?" he
challenged. The three replied, "O king, our God can deliver us out of your fiery
furnace. But if He doesn't, we still won't serve your gods nor worship your golden
image."

Nebuchadnezzar ordered the

furnace to be heated seven times hotter
than before. He had the strongest men
tie up the three and throw them into the
fire. Because of the heat, the furnace
alone instantly killed the king's men when
they threw the three Hebrews in the
furnace. Suddenly, Nebuchadnezzar
stood up and pointed a shaking finger at
the furnace. "Did we not throw three into
the furnace? Who is that fourth man with
them? And now could they be walking around in the fire and none of them
burned?" he inquired. He called to the three, "Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abednego! Come out!" When they came out, they did not smell of smoke nor
were their hair and clothes burned by the fire. The king and his men were amazed
and the king said, "Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego,
who has delivered them from the fiery furnace. You may worship your God and
not our gods. Anyone who speaks against your God will be destroyed."

Esther: Created for a Purpose

We live in an age where beauty or outward appearance is more valued
than character. Yet some people can be handsome but violent or pretty but
mean. This is why it is said that a person with intelligence, beauty, and character
is a rare find. The character in our story, Queen Esther, proved that she has all
three. Not only that, but she also risked her being a queen to serve God and her
people.

The king was looking for a

new queen. He sent an order to take
all the beautiful girls in his kingdom
to the palace. When the king saw
Esther, he immediately liked her. She
was one of the Hebrew prisoners
from Jerusalem taken by King
Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon.

But she did not tell anyone about her background and family as instructed
by her cousin Mordecai, who took care of her. After 10 months, Esther was
crowned queen.

The king promoted an officer, Haman, and he became very proud and
wanted everyone to bow down every time he walked past them. But Mordecai
refused to do so because he did not want to disobey the Ten Commandments.
This angered Haman. He plotted to kill Mordecai and asked the king to sign a law
that promised a reward to anyone who would kill a Jew on a certain day.

When Mordecai heard of the plot, he went to Esther and asked her to
plead for her people before the king. But Esther was afraid because it was not
allowed for the queen to come into the presence of the king unless he called for
her. Death was the punishment if she dared to do
it. So, she asked Mordecai to tell all the Jews not
to eat but to pray for three days. She and her

70
maids would do the same at the palace then she would go to ask for the king's
audience.

She prepared a dinner party for two days for the king and his guest
Haman. There, she told the king about the danger that awaited her people. The
king was furious and ordered Haman to be hanged. The full story is amusing

Abraham Held on To God Promise

There was a man named Abram.
He lived in a city called Haran. He came
from the line of Shem, the eldest of
Noah. Noah's family-his wife, his three
sons, and their wives were the only
survivors of the 'Great Flood.

Everyone who lived in Haran

worshipped idols. God saw that Abram
was different. He longed to know God.
God knew Abram had to get out of the
wicked influence of the idol worshippers, so He told Abram to take his family and
travel to a land He would show him.

"If you obey Me, I will make you into a great nation “God promised Abram. Even
though Abram did not know where the Lord would lead him and his family, he
obeyed God. He trusted that God would take care of him. He told his wife Sarai
what God told him and she trusted Him, too.

She ordered everyone to pack the tents onto camels. "Gather the food into
bundles and get ready for a long trip ‘she told them.

Abram and his family and their flocks of sheep and cattle walked for many
days and slept in tents at night. When they came to the land of Canaan, God
appeared to Abram, "This is the land I will give to your children Abram built an
altar to God and worshipped Him there. Abram was thankful that God had safely
led them to a new place to live.

Abram and his wife Sarai had no children. God appeared to Abram again
when he was 99 years old. He promised that he would be the father to many
nations and that Sarai, who was 90 years old, would be the mother of nations.

Then God gave them new names. Abram would be called "Abraham"
which means "father to many nations, and Sarai became "Sarah which means
princess" or "mother of nations.”

75
Abraham laughed to think that he and Sarah could have a son at their age.
It was impossible! But, with God, all things are possible. The following year, Sarah
gave birth to a son as promised by God. They named him Isaac, which means
“laughter." Indeed, God kept His promise.

Years passed, and Isaac grew into a strong young man. One night, God
began to test Abraham to see whom he loved more, his son or God." lake you’re
on, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to Moriah. Sacrifice him there a
burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."

With a heavy heart, Abraham rose the next morning and prepared for the
journey. He gathered a bundle of wood and a pot of fire for the sacrifice and
supplies for the three-day trip. With a couple of servants, he and Isaac set off for
Mount Moriah to worship God.

"Father' said Isaac, “the fire and wood are here, but where is the lamb for,
he burnt to offer? “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my
son" Abraham answered.

When they reached the base of Mount Moriah, Abraham said to his
servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. we will
worship and then we will come back to you.

At the top of Mount

Moriah, Abraham and Isaac
built an altar of large stones
for the sacrifice. Then
Abraham tied up Isaac and
laid him on the altar. Isaac
did not resist. He trusted his
father. Abraham raised his
knife to kill his son.

Suddenly the angel

God Makes People Great

Moses was the son of an Israelite from the lineage of Joseph and his
brothers. His family still lived in Egypt, but at that time, the Egyptians did not like
that so many Israelites were living in Egypt with them. They made the Israelites
their slaves and the new king commanded that all Israelite baby boys be killed.

Moses was hidden by his mother and sister and made to float in a basket
on the river. He was rescued by the king's daughter, who raised him as a prince of
Egypt. When he grew up, God called him to free the Israelites and lead them to
the land that would become the country of Israel. Moses answered God's call and
God worked miracles through him-like parting the Red Sea in two so that the
Israelites could cross on dry land, making the Israelites win against their enemies
by Moses uplifted staff and producing water from a rock. Moses led the Israelites
across the desert for 40 years until they were just outside the land God had
promised to give them.

Moses passed away, so his assistant, Joshua, led the people into the land
God gave them. But there were many enemies still living in the land. The Israelites
had to fight them so that they would go away. Joshua made the leaders promise
they would always serve God. He led them to many wonderful victories, like

80
defeating the city of Jericho by sounding the trumpets, which made the thick
walls of Jericho fall. In one battle, because Joshua asked God to help them, the
sun shone in the sky for a whole day and did not set until the Israelites won the
fight. Joshua remained faithful to God throughout all his life and did and trusted
what God told him.

The Prophet Samuel

One of the favorite stories in the Bible is the story of a boy named Samuel.
Samuel's mother was a woman named Hannah. She wanted a son more than
anything, so she prayed and asked God to give her a son. She promised God that
if He would give her a son, she would give him back to God to serve Him all the
days of his life. God gave Hannah the son she asked for and she kept her promise
to God. When the boy was old enough, she took him to the temple and
presented him to Eli the priest. So, Samuel served in the temple under Eli.

Samuel was one of God's most

influential prophets of Israel. A prophet
is a person regarded as an inspired
teacher or proclaimer of the will of God.
When Samuel was very old, the people
were afraid that nobody would lead
them when he died. They begged
Samuel for a king, which he did not
agree with because he believed that
God was their King. However, God
permitted this and sent Samuel out to
search for the one who was to be king.
God directed him to a tall, handsome
young man Whose name was Saul. He
called the people and anointed Saul
with oil in front of them. As he did so,
he warned them, "Here is the king you
ask for. If you obey the

Lord and serve Him and do not turn against His commandment, all will be
well. If, however, you do not obey the Lord, both you and your king will be
destroyed Israel was at war. One of their enemies, the Amalekites, was wicked
and cruel. Samuel went to Saul to deliver a message from God: "Attack the city of
Amalek and destroy it. Kill every person and animal" Saul went to attack the city

84
but he took to king alive and spared the best of the cattle and the sheep. God
was not pleased and made known to Samuel that Saul had disobeyed. Samuel
confronted Saul, who denied disobeying God. "Then what is that whining that I
hear?" he rebuked, "We only took the best sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the
Lord," Saul defended. Then Samuel said, "Does the Lord want sacrifices and
offerings? No! He doesn't want your sacrifices. He wants you to obey Him.

Samuel mourned for Saul.

The Lord spoke to him again and
sent him to the house of Jesse. He
all his sons but found none fit to
be king. He asked Jesse if he had
another son. David, the youngest,
was called from the fields. He still
looked like a boy and Samuel
doubted the Lord's choice.
However, God told him not to
look at the boy's appearance. "|
see his heart. Anoint him."

During the reign of the

kings, the prophets were the
messengers of God. God spoke
instructions or warnings to the
king and the people through the
prophets.

The Early Followers

Do you still remember how you felt when you first entered school as a new
student, or as a transferee from another school? Were you afraid, sad, and quite
uneasy? Did you long to see someone familiar?

Once you started to make friends, you usually get along well with those
you share something in common. Being in a group of friends gives you security
and a sense of belongingness. From this outlook, you can somehow have an idea
of why and how the early Church was formed.

The Bible tells how the believers stayed together and shared all that they
had with each other. Coming together to worship, to listen to the leaders teach,
and to help each other are what Jesus wanted the believers to do.

After Jesus went back to heaven, His followers gathered in an upper room where
they received the gift that Jesus promised the Holy Spirit. The work of the Holy
Spirit added 3 000 men to their number that day.

Through God's Holy Spirit, many miracles were performed by God's

followers, such as feeding multitudes of people, healing the sick, and even raising
the dead. They spent a lot of time together to learn more about Jesus. They
shared everything they had so that nobody lacked in important needs. They were
like a big family.
