Telling Your Experience in Watching a Sport Event
When you’re telling your friend about the sport event you attended last time, you are
producing a recount text. A recount text tells the audience or reader someone’s
experience in form of a set of events that happened in the past.

 Regular and Irregular Verbs (part 1)
The simple past tense shows the action
happened in the past, or the events that
happened before the present. Thus, it is
often used with past time references (e.g.
yesterday, two years ago, last Sunday, etc.).
The form of the past simple depends
whether the verb is regular or irregular. Most
regular past simple forms are formed by
adding -ed to the infinitive of the verb, but
there are some spelling rules for regular
verbs. Learn the examples of regular verb
below.

information or enjoyment. A recount can tell a particular part of an event or a series
of events (an entire story). Recount texts are either spoken or written.

 General Structure of a Recount Text

In general, a recount text is built in three sections: orientation, series of events, and
re-orientation.
The orientation tells the background information, such as who were involved,
where, and what happened.

Simple Past Tenses
A recount text commonly uses simple past tense. A simple past tense is formed by
using regular or irregular verbs in Verb 2 form (past simple form).

Simple Past Tense is used to express

3. Decide a sport event you want to write your report on.

have made earlier.
6. Write the answers, then present the result as a proper presentation in front of
the class.

Group Project 2
Work in a group of four to do this project.
1. You are going to do a project called “Pictures Story” converting one of your
group member’s recount text to a strip comic.
2. Prepare the text as several pointers.
3. Make a draft of the comic script. Focus on the series of events, visual imagery,
and the writer’s emotion.
4. Draw your comic book. You can either draw it yourself, take pictures of you
acting as the comic panels, or take pictures from internet.
5. Present you work to the class, and publish it on your social media.

Read the following recount text about Ruli, an amateur runner.
Hi. I’m Ruli. I ran in my first half-marathon in 2022, and it was
fantastic.
I trained for four months for the race. I trained with my running
community. Sometimes it was hard, but I usually enjoyed it.
During the last month before the race, I started training alone
and more intensely.
In the day of the race, I felt ready for the race. Even since the
starting gun, I was very optimistic that I get a good result. But
then, I ran out of energy in the last 7km. I started to feel dizzy
and exhausted, so I stopped running and started walking. All
other runners were passing me one by one. In the end, I was
one of the last ones to arrive – it took me two hours to finish!
However, being the winner isn’t important. I enjoyed it and felt
proud that I finished the 21.1 kilometres. Yes, that’s how far I
ran. Now I’m training for my next race – a full marathon.
