INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Deodorizing products in indoor spaces help eliminate

unpleasant odors that can make the environment uncomfortable

and uninviting. Indoor spaces can accumulate odors from

various sources such as cooking, pets, laundry, stinky shoes,

bed sheets, dry sweat, smoking, and among others. These odors

can linger and become unpleasant, which can affect the overall

comfort and well-being of the occupants. There are lots of

commercial deodorizers that are sold in the market, however,

commercial deodorizers include the possibility of toxic

ingredients which may pose health risks, and the potential for

an overwhelming and artificial fragrance that can cause

respiratory irritation for some individuals.

Additionally, some commercial deodorizers can be

harmful to the environment, as they may contain substances

that are not biodegradable and can contribute to pollution.

Deodorizers are products designed to reduce unwanted odors in

indoor spaces, or to introduce pleasant fragrances, or both.

They typically emit fragrance to mask odors, but may use other

methods of action such as absorbing, bonding to, or chemically

albering compounds in the air that produce smells, killing

organisms that produce smells, or disrupting the sense of

smell to reduce perception of unpleasant

According to Surjushe. (2008), Aloevera plant has

been known and used for centuries for its health, beauty,

medicinal and skincare properties. Aloevera plant contains

different nutrient contents including vitamins, minerals,

enzymes, sugars, phemolic compounds that have the ability to

neutralized unpleasant odors and are used in manufacturing

perfumes in the industry. Aloe vera extract is a substance

that has a fresh and citrusy scent, making it an effective

deodorizer, and it has potent antimicrobial properties that

can help eliminate bacteria that cause bad odors.

According to Magaz (2020), the calamansi pulp

extract was shown to have an effective antimicrobial property

against S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and C. albicans. Just like

lemon, it was packed with vitamin e and other nutrients.

Morever, the benefit of calamansi is that it acts as a natural

body odor eliminator and disinfectant. It has antibacterial

properties and its high acidity can kill odor-causing

bacteria.

According to Ayurveda, different parts of Lemon tree

possess various medicinal properties. Many properties such as

anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-oxidant and anti-diabetic

are shown by lemon.

The natural deodorizer derived from a blend of lemon,

calamansi, and pomelo offers a myriad of benefits across

various settings such as schools, homes, offices, hospitals,

communities, and for the benefit of future researchers. This

innovative product serves as an effective solution to combat

and eliminate unpleasant odors that may linger in indoor

spaces. The refreshing and revitalizing aroma of the citrus

fruits not only masks undesirable scents but also contributes

to creating a more pleasant and inviting environment for

individuals occupying these spaces.

Moreover, the utilization of natural ingredients in this

deodorizer enhances its appeal, especially in settings where

chemical-laden products may not be suitable due to concerns

about allergies, sensitivities, or environmental impact. By

promoting the use of a natural deodorizer, it also aligns with

the growing trend towards eco-friendly and sustainable

practices in various sectors.

Statement of the Problem

 General Objective

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Calamansi

(Citrus macrocarpa), Lemon (Citrus limon) Pomelo (Citrus

maxima) extract and Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis miller) gel as

deodorizer

 Specific Objective

Specifically, this study aimed to answer the following

questions:

1. Can Calamansi, Lemon and Pomelo extract and Aloe vera gel

be used as an alternative deodorizer in indoor spaces?

2. Is the deodorizer from the extract of Calamansi, Lemon and

Pomelo extract and Aloe vera gel effective in terms of aroma?

3. Is there a significant difference in the aroma of

Calamansi, Lemon and Pomelo extract and Aloe vera gel as an

alternative deodorizer?

Statement of the Hypothesis

1. Among the three treatments made, no one is the most

effective as an alternative deodorizer in terms of aroma.

2. There is no significant difference in the aroma of

Calamansi, Lemon and Pomelo extract and Aloe vera gel as an

alternative deodorizer.

PROCEDURES

Gathering the materials

The researchers will collect 1 kilogram of Calamansi

and 1 kilogram of Lemon at Barangay San Pedro, Tapaz, Capiz,

and the 1 kilogram of Pomelo and the Aloe vera plant at

Barangay Carida, Tapaz, Capiz. The materials will be the

following plants (Pomelo, Lemon, Calamansi and Aloe vera),

measuring tools (1 pitcher of water,1 butane gas, strainer,

frying pan, butane gas stove, molding tray, 3 plastic

containers, teaspoon, measuring cups, kitchen knife, and

chopping board). The researchers will conduct the experiment

at Barangay Poblacion, Tapaz, Capiz.

Preparation of Extraction

Extract the juice from Calamansi and Lemon by gently cutting

the fruits in half with knife, squeezing the juice only, and

placing it in a separate container. When extracting Pomelo,

first peel the fruit with a knife, slice it in the center,

squeeze out the juice and place it in a container. For Aloe

vera extraction, vertically cut the leaf, scrape off the gel,

and put in a container. Finally, strain the Calamansi, Lemon,

and Pomelo extract.

Preparation of Mixture

75ml of Calamansi, 75ml of Lemon, and 75ml of pomelo extracts,

along with 15ml of aloe vera gel and 60ml of beeswax, were

utilized in three stages. The process began by melting the

beeswax (20ml for each treatment). Subsequently, the extracts

were simmered on low heat for 10 minutes. Following this, the

melted beeswax was incorporated with the extracts and aloe

vera gel (5ml per treatment). Finally, the resulting mixture

was poured into a mold to solidify

Discussion
Table 1. Aroma
Three treatments were tested: Treatment A, Treatment B,

and Treatment C. Each treatment was replicated three times.

The results of the experiment showed that treatment A had the

highest rating of aroma (256) across all replication, with an

average of mean of 2.8333 rating per replication. Treatment A

had the second highest rating of aroma (234) and an average

mean of 2.6000. Treatment C had the lowest total rating of

aroma of 161 and with an average mean of 1.7667

Table 1. ANOVA results in terms of aroma

ANOVA results revealed that the p-value (0.011) is less

than (0.05) thus the null hypothesis is rejected. Therefore,

there is no significant difference among the varying

concentrations of Calamansi, Lemon and Pomelo extract and Aloe

vera gel as deodorizer in terms of aroma.

Conclusion
Based on the results, the researchers concluded that in

terms of Aroma, Treatment B, which involved Lemon extract and

Aloe vera gel, demonstrated the highest average of aroma

compared to the other treatment.
