Sled pulling has become an
every-weekend occurrence
around Florida, and with LST coming up we’re ready to
kick it into gear and get back to sharing these awesome
shows that some of you can’t attend.

The past month I’ve been working on getting my (no


longer broken) transmission out of “Stock to Not” and
back in the truck, as well as a SPICY s467 that takes the
place of our stock replacement 362 so we can get to our
700hp goal.

This book is getting more and more dialed in every


single issue, and our efforts to keep print outlets alive
and well in our industry are being noticed by our readers.

E
veryone has their favorite
engine configuration when
it comes to power numbers,
torque, performance, and all-
over quality, but if you ask Ford diesel fans
what their engine of choice is, chances are
most of them will put the 7.3L V-8 Power
Stroke at the top of the list.

Known as being virtually “bulletproof” with


regular maintenance, the 7.3L can be found
in Ford light-duty trucks all the way back
as far as 1994. Despite being replaced with
the 6.0L Power Stroke in the second quarter
of 2003, due in large part to California’s
emissions and noise regulations, the 7.3
remains one of the most sought-after diesel
engines in the Ford truck fleet today. That
very engine is exactly what inspired Caleb
Rennekamp of Groveland, Florida, to build
this custom truck!

“The entire fuel system for the engine was
replaced with a FASS Diesel fuel system
featuring Full Force Diesel 238cc/80-percent
fuel injectors, a Sinister Diesel regulated
fuel return kit, and a massive 67-gallon
Titan fuel tank. The standard oil filtration
system was also replaced, putting in its
place a Harvard Corporation system with
an impressive 27-quart capacity and a
DieselSite Adrenaline high pressure oil
pump. Other components added to the
engine include a Mishimoto radiator, COMP
Cams valve springs and pushrods, and a
5-inch MBRP exhaust system tied to factory
ceramic-coated headers and dumps just
behind the rear axle.

Backing the upgraded Power Stroke engine


is that aforementioned ZF 6-speed manual
transmission, which was swapped into
the F-250 using all Ford parts and a Ford
wiring harness. Inside, the transmission
has been upgraded with a South Bend dual
disc clutch, which pushes power to both the
front and rear axles by way of 3.73 gears.

Platinum Status
While Caleb certainly wanted to build a
unique truck, he didn’t want to take away

from the fact that this one was pretty rare
to begin with, so he opted to keep body
modifications on the F-250 to a minimum.

Look closely and you’ll notice that the


truck’s Platinum color-keyed grille and solid
chrome bumpers have been swapped out
for 2005-to-2007 model-year Ford factory
fare, and the color-keyed windshield visor
and specialty running boards that originally
came with the Platinum package have
been removed. Other than that, the truck’s
exterior remains pretty standard, right down
to the exclusive Silver Metallic and Mineral
Gray Metallic two-tone paint scheme that
truly set the 2001 Platinum Editions apart
from the rest of the model-year’s F-Series
trucks.

The interior of the truck follows suit, with


restored two-tone gray leather Platinum
Edition seats, as well as the standard
Platinum Edition center console. A couple
unique upgrades were added to the interior
of the truck, but they fit in so flawlessly
with the standard fare that you may not
even notice them. These include full cab and
roof sound deadening thanks to HushMat, as
well as new Auto Custom Carpets carpeting.

W
hen the time comes
for a seasoned
custom car builder
and collector to look
for something ‘different’ than they have
had in the past, this is what they gravitate
towards. Just finding a ’54 Ford C750 and
getting it back in driving condition would
fit the bill for staking claim on possessing
an uncommon vehicle, but there’s always
more room to further venture out into the
territory of truly unusual. Mark Pierson of
Sarasota, Florida is a well-documented car
and truck enthusiast who is always hunting
for his next wild addition to his collection.
While he currently has several unique
vehicles in his stable, his latest acquisition
captures far more attention than the rest.

AGED TO PERFECTION
While Mark is never afraid to dive deep into
a project to bring it back from the grave,
he purchased his 1954 Ford C750 cab-over-
engine (COE) in previously rebuilt condition.
The cab is still in factory form for the most
part. The naturally weathered patina has
been left alone because there’s just no way
of recreating the perfectly imperfect surface
of a truck that has been under the elements

for 70 years. That’s not saying that there
isn’t beauty of a well-executed ‘fauxtina’
finish, but there’s nothing quite like the real
deal.

BUMPER FAB
The one thing that Mark did add to the
cab comes in the form of the crazy one-off
front bumper. Built from stainless steel and
adorned with rows of intimidating spikes
and lights, the bumper features post-
apocalyptic styling that would look right at
home on a purpose-built rig starring in Mad
Max. Once it was completely mocked up,
the bumper was sent to C2 Powder Coating
in Bradenton, Florida so it could be treated
with a transparent copper color to better
blend in with the C750’s aged appearance.

A SOLID FOUNDATION
Before Mark purchased this ’54, its
previously caretaker vastly enhanced
the performance of the truck in so many
ways. The original engine and suspension
systems were tossed aside for the much
fresher power plant and chassis from a 2000
Ford E450. The transplanted components,
especially the Power Stroke 7.3L mill,
worked perfectly to get the C750 back on

PSC hydraulic steering cylinder. The ability
to adjust the truck’s ride height was well
worth the effort, and to double down on
the old Ford’s updated air ride system, a set
of 26-inch JTX premium forged wheels and
high-performance Pirelli tires were mounted

new rear fenders along with the killer dually
wheels below give Mark’s latest project
a stylish yet functional sensibility to the
truck’s outcome.

THINGS TO COME
While the C750’s interior hasn’t seen any
major upgrades yet, a set of Dakota Digital
gauges and air ride and A/C controls
currently sit as the only modernized
amenities to have shown up so far. Mark
doesn’t plan to leave the inner cab space as
untouched as it currently is, however. He
does want to build it up to full show-worthy
shape featuring a loose copper-centric
steampunk theme, and we can’t wait to
see what he does with within the confines
of the weathered Ford shell. It won’t take
a whole lot to increase the cabin’s cool
factor as there is nothing as appealing as
the nostalgic look and feel of classic factory
charm.

managed to display it at local auto events
due to time restraints. He does want to
make his way outside of the state of Florida

S
ometimes all you need in
life is a really clean dually.
Kenneth Statton, who goes
by Kenny, out of Claremore,
Oklahoma, has built just that. His gray
2018 Ford F-350 has gone through quite
the transformation to become a show build
that showcases Liberty Forged wheels,
the brand his son, Steven Statton, started,
while still maintaining the ability to tow
and be a workhorse around town. Starting
off, the truck of course had to get a set
of 26x12 Liberty’s (LBTYD19’s) that came
wrapped in a set of 37” RT Venom Power
Tires, with the front wheels being super
singles. Up next meant dropping the truck
off at Highway 20 Collision in Claremore
to get some Liberty Forged graphics made
by Outlaw Graphics installed on the side
of the truck as well as getting a few parts
paint-matched. While there, the truck got a
Bodyguard bumper swap for the front and
rear that ensures the truck looks super sharp
while being able to take any beating that
comes its way. Rear view mirrors and the
epic Cervini hood were painted to match as

and it cannot be said enough how perfectly

Fear not! 24 Beemer rock lights have been
installed that send a cascade light on every
nook and cranny, allowing the powder
to shine and sparkle with ease. Even on
the Mach1Media shoot with this truck in
the empty lakebed at SEMA 2023, there
was almost no issue capturing everything
underneath, which is pretty surprising
considering how epically bright it can be out
there! As far as the interior goes, Code Zero
Customs did their thing and painted all of
the plastic pieces, and installed a subwoofer
with a custom enclosure under the back
seat.

The 6.7 itself has also been modified to an


extent, receiving a Maryland Performance
Diesel Piping Kit and a CCV delete. As for
exhaust, there is a five inch Flo Pro kit that
lets the truck breathe that much better as
well as subtly boosting the exhaust note.

t doesn’t take being a shop owner to build the
ultimate diesel, but it certainly doesn’t hurt!
Between Randall Williams and his crew at The
Diesel Shop in Locust Grove, Oklahoma, they have
many years of building prowess and diesel expertise.
So it should come as no surprise that our gorgeous
cover model this month, a built 2017 Ford F-350 Super
Duty, hinged on that combined skill set, resulting in one
unforgettable custom truck.

EVERYONE LOVES A LOWERED DUALLY


Randall and his crew at The Diesel Shop have built
a number of impressive trucks over the years, but if
you’re looking for a unique showstopper like no other,
look no further than one of Randall’s personal rigs—his
lowered 2017 F-350 Super Duty dually.

Traditionally, dual rear-wheel trucks are thought of


as strict workhorses, capable of towing and hauling
thousands of pounds with little effort. But outside of this
magazine, how many dually-turned-show-trucks do you
normally see? Not that Randall has taken this truck to any
shows, but certainly wouldn’t look out of place if he did.

While Randall’s dually maintains its superior towing
and hauling abilities, it’s the truck’s unique details that
elevate it to a different class—or lower it—as the next
thing you’ll notice about the truck second only to the
red paint is its lower than average stance.

Featuring a full air-suspension system, the F-350 proves


just how good a lowered dually can look. Giving the
truck its lowered stance is a Hutch’s Welding front air-
bag suspension kit paired with a custom cantilever rear
air-bag suspension kit built specifically for the project
by The Diesel Shop. Backing the air suspension are dual
Viair compressors and a 7-gallon air tank.

“Everyone loves a lowered dually, even the haters,”


Randall told us when asked what he learned while
building his truck. We have to say we definitely agree!

Adding to the truck’s unique look are stout 24-inch Alcoa


wheels, which Randall wrapped in 285/40R24 Giovanna
rubber – tires known for their all-weather performance as
well as reduced road noise. Expertly tucked up into the
truck’s fender wells, Randall tells us there is no rubbing
from the tires to speak of, from one end of the truck’s
steering to the other. The aggressive bulldog-like stance
achieved by combining a bagged suspension with the
large wheels and tires tucked up under the truck was
certainly worth the effort to do it right.

POWER STROKE
Although the truck has been modified considerably as
far as the suspension is concerned, it was important to
Randall that the truck remained true to its diesel form.
So, under the hood, the dually maintains a 2017 6.7L
Power Stroke diesel V-8, but not without a number of
components upgrading its power and performance.

First and foremost, Randall and his team at The Diesel


Shop outfitted the engine with a KC Turbos Whistler
turbocharger, which added over 100 horsepower with its
drop-in application. The team also added a five-position
chip for added horsepower and torque adjustability on
command.

Letting the truck breathe even better is a No Limit


Fabrication cold-air intake, while H&S Motorsports upper
and lower fuel filter kits give added protection to the
truck’s fuel system. Fuel for the truck is supplied through
a 50-gallon fuel tank. Expelling the spent fuel from the
engine is a custom 4-inch exhaust dumping just in front
of the truck’s rear wheels.

Backing the Power Stroke, you’ll find the truck’s reliable


factory 6R140 6-speed automatic transmission, spinning
a heavy-duty driveshaft.

THE FULL PACKAGE
Randall’s F-350 Super Duty remains pretty true to form
in regards to the truck’s body and interior, but they too
got upgrades to enhance the build.

Outside, the truck features a Fomoco grille, RYD


Motorsports bumper valance, and an aftermarket hood,
all of which add to the overall character of the build.
Nothing, however is quite as stunning as the Race
Red paint that graces the body, laid by Donny Maner.
Absolutely flawless, the color was chosen to garner
attention, undoubtedly, but for us, its the meticulously
chosen black accents and contrasting body-color
badging that really makes the truck stand out. This is
definitely not your average factory Race Red and black
paint scheme!

Inside, the truck fittingly maintains its factory black


leather upholstery, but the steering wheel has been
upgraded to that of a factory Ford Raptor along with
paddle shifters. The stereo system saw the biggest
upgrade inside, featuring a Phoenix stereo system with
a 13-inch Tesla Style digital screen head unit. The system
also features a MTI Acoustics custom box with a 13-inch JL
Audio subwoofer and matching JL Audio amplifier.

GETTING CLOSER TO REACHING 700HP!

elcome back to another We have been over-fueling our last turbocharger
installment of “Stock to Not,” (Smeding Diesel S362) quite a bit for the first

As you can see, our stock manifold goes right along with the rest of the 30-year-old truck (old, rusty and crusty) but that charger looks
good on there! Time to get rid of that.

Now that we’ve removed the old manifold and charger, we’re going to get these stainless manifold bolts in. Definitely make sure to get
enough of the stud threaded into the head because you’re about to put a lot of weight on them. You don’t want to only have a couple threads in
there holding everything up. Also, don’t forget the anti-seize!

TECH ›› MOVING ON TO AN S467 IN STOCK TO NOT

Normally I like to put the charger on the manifold before it goes into the engine bay. Doing this makes it a little easier to get a good grip
on the back of the turbo bolts to make sure they’re tight. V-banded turbos like this Smeding Diesel S467 also make putting this in so much
easier because assembly/disassembly is way easier as you can see in these photos., Only the hot side is on the manifold so there isn’t a
whole turbo in the way.
Time to get this manifold on! Make sure
your manifold gaskets are on and set on
the studs. Readjust your studs as needed and
get the nuts on there and tighten down like
you would a set of lug nuts (not in clockwise
order). I went back and forth from left to right
of the charger for every nut I tightened down
and went back over them after they were all
snugged up.

Reassemble your turbo, being sure to be


very cautious of the compressor wheel
when putting it back together. Tighten your
clamps down and angle your housing however
you need to angle towards the intercooler.

hard to achieve, so I’ve had the truck paint
corrected to perfection and ceramic-coated
multiple times throughout its life.
“Overall, this truck makes me the person I
am today,” he continues. “It’s my summer
ride and my occasional drag-strip toy that
will run steady high 7s in the 1/8 mile. All
the work was done by myself and friends
who have the same hobby that I do.
Currently makes about 750hp and I can see
it making more in the future.
