It was a beautiful morning in the village. It’s the beginning

of the weekend. Salma and her family decided to spend a
wonderful day in one of the beautiful village valleys. The
family got ready and Salma carried her small backpack
on her back. It was full of delicious food and fun games.

the car drove off the beautiful valleys of the

village. It is decorated with Sidr, Ghaf and Smer
trees, and water streams that were formed due to
heavy rains.

‫المناسب لقضا ِء يومها‬

ِ‫وصلت األسر ُة إلى المكان‬ ‫وبعد أن‬

.‫اللعب بالما ِء مع إخوتِها‬

After the family got to the right place to spend

the day, Salma was very happy and started playing
with water with her brothers.

‫اقتربت األغنا ُم من الميا ِه التي‬

ِ ‫أغنا َمها‬

‫وكانت العجو ُز تهشُّ ها بعصا‬ ،‫لتشرب‬
َ ‫تسبح فيها سلمى‬
ُ
‫وخرجت مسرع ًة نحو‬
ْ ‫األغنام‬
ِ ‫ خافت سلمى من‬.‫صغير ٍة‬
‫ ما اسمك يا بنتي؟‬:ُ‫ سألتها العجوز‬.‫أ ِّمها‬
During that time, Salma heard the voice of an
old woman grazing her goats near the place. The
goats came close to the water where Salma was
swimming to drink. The old woman was hitting
them with a small stick. Salma was afraid of the
goats and ran out to her mother. The old woman
asked her: What is your name, my daughter?

ٌ ‫اسم‬ٌ ‫ إنه‬:ُ‫ قالت العجوز‬.‫ اسمي سلمى‬:‫أجاب ْتها سلمى‬
‫ سوف أُس ِم ُع ِك بعضً ا من األغاني التي‬.‫األغنام‬
ِ ‫مني وال تخافي ِم َن‬
‫ َفرِحت‬.‫عادات توارثَها أجدا ُدنا‬
ٌ ‫ وهي‬،‫أُغنيها ألغنامي في المرعى‬
‫ فأنشدت العجو ُز بصوتِها‬،‫لسما ِعها‬ َ ‫ إنني متحمس ٌة‬:‫سلمى وقالت‬
‫الجبل أرعى سخيالتي تدهور علي‬ َ ‫طلعت‬ُ ‫ يمي‬:‫الجميلِ المتهالك‬
.‫الجبل وتكسرن نطيالتي‬

Salma answered: My name is Salma. The old woman
said: It’s a beautiful name. Come close to me and
don’t be afraid of the goats. I will sing to you some
of the songs I sing to my goats in the pasture. These
are habits passed down by our grandparents. Salma
was happy and said: I am excited to hear. The old
woman sang in her beautiful and shabby voice: oh
mother I went to the mountain, to graze my goats,
the mountain degraded and broken 12

‫جدا! ما اسم هذا الف ِّن‬ ًّ ‫ إنها جميل ٌة‬..‫ألله‬
ُ ‫ يا‬:‫قالت سلمى‬
‫الجميلِ يا خالتي؟‬
‫قدم‬ِ ِ‫متوارث من ُذ ال‬
ٌ ‫ وهو ف ٌّن‬،‫ إِنه فن التعويب‬:ُ‫قالت العجوز‬ِ
‫ وهن يرعين أغنامهن في األودي ِة وعلى‬،‫تتغنى به النساء‬

.‫الجبال‬ ‫سفو ِح‬

Salma said: Oh my God. It’s so beautiful. What

is the name of this beautiful art, my aunt?
The old woman said that it is the art of AL-Ta-
aweeb,and it is an art that has been inherited
since ancient times and that women sing about
it while they graze their sheep in the valleys and
on the slopes of the mountain 14

‫لتناول وجبة‬ ‫صوت أمها تناديها‬
َ ‫بعد ذلك سمعت سلمى‬
،‫الغدا ِء‬
‫فشكرت سلمى العجو َز ثم انطلقت مسرع ًة نحو أ ِّمها‬
‫بالقرب من‬
ِ ‫وأخبرتْها عن المرأ ِة العجو ِز التي ترعى أغنا َمها‬
.‫مكانِ نُزهتهم‬

After that, Salma heard the voice of her mother

calling her to eat lunch
Salma thanked the old woman and then rushed
to her mother and told her about the old woman
who grazed her goats near their picnic place.

‫ وطلبت‬،‫الطعام‬
ِ ‫وسكبت للعجو ِز صح ًنا من‬
ْ ِ
‫فقامت األ ُّم‬
.ِ‫تذهب مسرعة وتقد َمه للمرأ ِة العجوز‬
َ ‫من سلمى أن‬
.‫سأذهب في الحال‬ُ ‫ حس ًنا يا أمي‬:‫قالت سلمى‬

So the mother poured a plate of food to the old

woman and asked Salma to go quickly and serve
it to the old woman.

Salma said: Okay, mom. I’ll go right away.

‫ وهي تغني ألغنا ِمها شي ًئا‬،َ‫فسمعت سلمى المرأ َة العجوز‬ ْ
ٍ‫بيت العو ِد محلى ظليل‬
ُ ‫ (بي ُتنا‬:‫من التعويب الجميلِ وتقول‬
‫ ومحلى بوي يوم‬،‫فيه ومحلى خوي يوم معلق سال َحه فيه‬
‫قدمت‬
ْ .‫منوخ ركابه فيه) وكانت األغنام متجمعة حولها‬
.‫سلمى للمرأ ِة العجو ِز الطعا َم‬
Salma heard the old woman singing some
beautiful singing to her goats and saying: “Our
house is the house of Al Oud how beautiful is the
shadow, how beautiful is my brother placing his
gun on his shoulders is the day his gun is hanging
and how beautiful is my fathers when he put his
camels on it.” The goats were gathered around
her. Salma handed the food the old woman.

.‫وقدمت لها ِقالد ًة جميل ًة‬
ْ ‫شكرت المرأ ُة العجو ُز سلمى‬ ِ
‫ وهي‬،‫ذات الرائحة الزكية‬ ِ ِ‫ُصنعت من ثما ِر شجر ِة العلعالن‬
‫بارك‬
َ :‫وقالت العجو ُز لسلمى‬ ِ ،‫شجرة تنمو في أعالي الجبال‬
َ .‫فيك يا بنتي الصغير َة‬
‫سوف تك ُبري َن وعليك أن تكوني‬ ِ ‫الله‬
.‫آبائك وأجدا ِد ِك‬
َ ‫فخور ًة بعاداتِ ِك وتقالي ِد ِك التي ورث ِتها عن‬
the old woman thanked Salma and gave her a
beautiful necklace. It is made from the fruits of
the Alalan tree, which has a beautiful smell. It
is a tree that grows high in the mountains. The
old woman said may God bless you, my little
daughter. You will grow up and be proud of your
customs and traditions that you inherited from
your parents and grandparents.

 ٍ ‫للمنزل وهي سعيد ٌة لقضا ِء‬
‫يوم‬ ِ ِ
‫عادت األسر ُة‬ ‫عند المسا ِء‬
. ٍ‫جميل‬
‫ وكانت‬،‫ووضعت القالد َة على ر َقب ِتها‬
ِ ‫دخلت سلمى لغرف ِتها‬
.‫ذات رائح ٍة زكي ٍة‬َ
ِ‫أعد ِك بأن أكونَ فخور ًة بشجر ِة العلعالن‬ ُ :‫قالت سلمى‬
.‫وتغروداتِ ِك الجميل ِة‬
In the evening, the family returned home and
was happy to have a beautiful day.
Salma went into her room and put the necklace
on her neck, it has a wonderful smell.
Salma said I promise you to be proud of the
Alalan tree and your beautiful songs.
