1. Adjustment

1.1 Outline
Adjustment of the Fast SE imaging function is carried out
to minimize ringing artifact and shading of an image by
changing five parameters below.
P-encode GC
F-encode GC
Slice GC
P PRE GC
90RF PHASE
Two adjusting modes, AUTO and MANUAL, are available.
In the AUTO mode, select "AUTO" on the service mode No. 24
(FS GC ADJUSTMENT). It adjusts automatically the following
parameters:
F- encode GC
Slice-GC
P-encode GC
Parameters below are to be adjusted manually:
P- PRE GC
90RF PHASE
In MANUAL mode, select the most appropriate image from
images which parameter is changed by using the service mode
No. 25 (FS AUTO SCAN), and set the parameter with which the
image is obtained by selecting "MANUAL" on the service mode
No. 24 (FS GC ADJUSTMENT).
In MRCP sequence, TE is so long that the signal from the
phantom for about 90ms of T2 accessory to the system cannot
be brought out and the adjustment with the phantom is
impossible. Therefore, for MRCP measurement function, use
the MRCP specific phantom which is the same size as that of
S/N ratio measurement for head.
An example of FSE/FIR adjusted result for phantom image is
recorded on the B plane of the system software OD. Use it
as a criterion for completion of the adjustment.

1.2 Flow of Procedures
A typical example of adjusting procedure for FSE and FIR
parameters are shown below:
(-yG-)
l Adjust in AUTO mode F-encode CC, slice CC and
P-encode CC parameters of all of 2D-FSE sequences, ZDHFS SQ#92,SQ#94,
5Q#95, SQ#96,2PFl SQW41, SQ#46,3DFS SQX87.3D-HFS SQ#92 and SQ#93
for all the planes or designated plane.
l The sequence to which the same parameters can be used does not require
adjustment in AUTO mode. Refer to Subsection 1.4 5equence adjustment values
recording table and Section 3 Note (6).

(2) Setting phantom
Be sure to adjust position of the phantom so as to
display it at the center of CRT monitor screen. (If
misaligned, ROI may not come to the center of phantom at
SN ratio measurement.) Additionally, manual adjustment
is for 2D/3D-HFS/HFI sequence (MRCP sequence) only, use
the MRCP specific phantom as an adjustment phantom. In
AUTO mode adjustment, use S/N ratio measurement phantom
for head. Also for setting the phantom, the upper
portion of phantom should be displayed as an image as
shown below. (This setting is necessary when adjusting
ringing artifact in SAG and COR image adjustment.)

(Good example) (Bad example)

(3) Start the calibration scan of the select mode No. 15.
(The calibration scan executes offset adjustment of the
slice direction, phase direction and frequency direction
GC.)

(31 Set Manual in the Service Mode No. 24 FS GC ADJUSTMENT and

set the appropriate parameters. An example for FS SQ #44 is
shown below. If the difference is minimal though the PRE GC
is altered, set to ttO". Setting positive value to this
parameter apt to cause an artifact due to incomplete
excitation of 90° pulse.

(4) Adjustment
(a) Adjustment of P-encode GC
First, change the P-Encode parameter to adjust ringing.
Set FS SQ #44, Slice=TRS, Phase=A-P, Multi slice=1 to the
protocol, and effect a scan with the P-Encode parameter
changed in FS AUTO SCAN to check ringing to the image
obtained.
ADJ.PxANE=2J
ADJ. PARA. = 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 4J
Set the parameter of the image with minimum ringing.

- 14 -
(b) Adjustment of F-encode GC
Secondly change the F-encode parameter to adjust shading.
Set Slice=TRS, Phase DIR=A-P, Multi slice=1 to the
protocol, and make a scan with the F-encode parameter
changed in FS AUTO SCAN to check shading of the image
thus obtained.
ADJ.PLANE=3*/
ADJ. PARA. = -10, -5, 0, +5, +10 J
Set the parameter of the image with minimum shading.

(c) Adjustment of P-PRE GC

Thirdly, when ringing artifact with considerable
asymmetry (high brightness at the one side and low
brightness at the other side) remains in the phase
direction of the image, adjust the P-PRE GC parameter to
reduce this asymmetry.
(In case of dual contrast such as in SQ#84, use an image
of the 2nd echo for adjustment., \

Phase direction

Low brightness High brightness

Asymmetric ringing artifact

Set Slice=TRS, Phase DIR=A-P, Multi slice=1 to the

protocol, and make a scan with P-PRE GC parameter changed
in FS AUTO SCAN to check asymmetry of the image thus
obtained.
ADJ.PtiE=4J
AJIJ. PARA, = -10, -5, 0, 5, 10 J
Set the parameter of the image with minimum asymmetry.

- 15 - Lz2E-BM5032
(d) Adjustment of Slice GC
Set MULTI SLICE=3 and INTERVAL=SOmm, and perform FS AUTO
SCAN by changing the parameters so that the uniformity of
three images becomes the best by selecting parameter
combination.
ADJ.PLA.NE=lu/
ADJ. PARA. = -40, -30, -20, -10, 0, lo, 20, 30, 40 */
However, as the maximum slice number of 2D-HFS/HFI SQ#90
and 2D-HFS SQ#96 are 2, set the slice number 2 to perform
a scan.
(e) Adjustment of 90RF PHASE
Carry out 90RF PHASE adjustment only the time when the
same image quality as that of the sample image is unable
to obtain even though the above works from (a) to (d)
were carried out. This parameter being unable to use FS
auto scan, start the service mode No. 24 to change 90RF
PHASE parameter with manual mode, and check the image
quality by carrying out normal scan by setting MLTI SLICE
at 3 or more.
The effective range of 90RF PHASE parameter is from -45'
to +45O. For checking the image quality, an appropriate
step is about loo.
(f) Repeat the procedures described above with the conditions
for three slice planes, two phase directions, 6 times in
total as (TRS (A-P), SAG (A-P), COR (R-L), TRS (R-L), SAG
(H-F), COR (H-F).
When the phase is in the same direction, input the same
value as with the other side (For P-Encode parameter
only).
Perform the same procedure as described above for the
other sequence. Enter the parameters exactly what is
indicated in the table.

(9) Check the SN ratio of the adjusted sequence after

completion of the adjustment.

NOTE : * shows "with rephase"
**mark shows "MRCP sequence".
HFS/HFI sequence is MRCP sequence for which the
MRCP specific phantom shall be used as an
adjustment phantom.
The SN ratio of 3D-FS/HFS/HFI is the mean value of
3rd - 14th slices out of all 16 slices.

- 26-l - L2E-BM5032
3. Note
(1) Recon filter is used to correct the difference between
several echo amplitudes. Thus, the SN ratio of the image
changes.
(2) The Recon Filter value set with No. 5 FAST SE RECON
PARAMETER in MODE SET, Select mode No. 19 OFF LINE RECON,
is to be used in off line reconstruction.
(3) When the phase direction ringing and the frequency
shading are affected strongly by slice position, the GC
parameter fine tuning in phase and frequency directions
are to be carried out in manual mode for 3 multi slices
as in Slice GC Adjustment.
(4) If at the middle of the procedure an error message is
displayed, e.g., Range Over to suspend in AUTO Mode,
start the AUTO Mode for the sequence that is not yet
adjusted after the hardware is checked, e.g., RF pulse
bias.
(5) For high resolution FSE, FIR (Projection number and F-
ENCODE MTX are over 256), if phase direction ringing,
frequency direction shading, and slice direction SN ratio
are strongly affected by the position rather than the
previous case, carry out fine tuning in manual mode.
(6) The sequences for which the same values of adjustment
parameters can be used are shown below. However if
frequency direction shading and slice direction SN ratio
position dependency are great, make fine adjustment in
MANUAL mode.

(8) A light zebra artifact may appear the time of phantom

imaging by FSE with rephase. This artifact does not vary
eventhough FSGC value is adjusted. Take an image of
human body to confirm that this artifact does not affect
to take images in practical use.

(9) Carry out image check and image quality adjustment in 3D

sequence with Slice encode=1 (refer to 1.3.3 (2)).
Even if the adjustment is carried out with Slice
encode=l, it will result in no problem for accuracy of
the adjusted values. The adjustment can be done in a
shorter time than by doing it with slice encode=16.
However, the image quality with slice encode=1 is
inferior in comparison to the image with slice encode=16.
Refer to the sample image stored in the B plane of the
system OD.
Measure an S/N with slice encode=16.
