THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Homework has long been a part of the educational system. The idea

behind assigning homework is to reinforce classroom learning and enhance

students’ self-discipline and study habits. However, homework has been a

topic of concern for parents, educators, and students for years due to its

potential impact on student well-being. Homework overload is defined as the

excessive amount of homework assigned to students, which can result in

negative consequences such as stress, sleep deprivation, and decreased

academic performance (Rosário et al., 2019). In recent years, research has

shown an increase in the amount of homework given to high school students,

with some students reporting spending up to 4-5 hours a day on homework

(Leone, 2017).

Research from 2013 to 2023 has frequently demonstrated the

detrimental effects of heavy homework on senior high school students’

general wellness. A study by O’Connor and McCartney (2014) found that

excessive homework is associated with decreased physical health, including

headaches, eye strain, and back pain. Additionally, excessive homework has

been linked to sleep deprivation, which can lead to a host of physical health

problems such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease (Stanford University,

2014). Due to the proposition that it aids students in establishing self-

discipline and effective study habits, negative effects were in some ways

neglected under the assumption.

Excessive homework has also been linked to decreased academic

performance. In a study conducted by Trautwein et al. (2015), it was found

that students who reported doing more than 90 minutes of homework per day

experienced decreased academic performance. Similarly, a study by Fan et

al. (2017) found that excessive homework had a negative effect on students’

academic achievement. As they experience stress, anxiety, depression, and

physical ailment, they will academically decline. Moreover, excessive

homework has been linked to decreased social well-being. In a study

conducted by Pope et al. (2015), it was found that excessive homework had a

negative effect on students’ social lives, including decreased time spent with

family and friends and decreased participation in extracurricular activities. As

productive time is cut down, tension rises, which may result in negativity.

These findings emphasize the necessity for educators and institutions

to take into account how the increasing amount of homework affects students’

holistic aspects and to put in place homework regulations that promote

students’ well-being. To help students manage their homework load, schools

should also take into account each student’s unique needs and offer tools and

support.

Figure 1. Theoretical Framework

Figure 1 presents the theoretical framework of the study that aims to

identify the impact of giving excessive homework on KNCHS SHS students’

well-being and how it affects their holistic aspect. This includes holistic

development, academic performance, and cognitive, emotional, physical, and

social well-being as it leads to influencing each other in a complex way and

their strategies for coping mechanisms.

Review of Related Literature

A study by Epstein and Van Voorhis (2010) found that excessive

homework can have a negative impact on family time, which is essential for

the holistic development of students. According to the study, children who had

more than 90 minutes of homework each night reported having less

engagement and communication with their families. It is believed that

spending quality time with family is crucial for the overall well-being and

development of students.

O’Halloran et al. (2015) found that excessive homework can lead to

burnout and stress in high school students, which can have a negative impact

on their mental health. Through the study, it was discovered that students who

had more than three hours of homework each night reported feeling more

stressed and burned out. In addition, a study by León and Medina (2017)

City of Koronadal

found that excessive homework can lead to a lack of interest in learning and

decreased academic achievement. Students who had more than two hours of

homework each night reported poorer levels of academic accomplishment

and motivation, according to the study. The pressure exerted on students to

accomplish their schoolwork has frequently been too much for their minds to

bear. Due to this pressure, they become unable to think clearly and are lazier.

Furthermore, a study by Fan et al. (2020) found that excessive

homework can have a negative impact on student’s physical health,

particularly their sleep quality. The study discovered that students who had

more than two hours of homework each night reported less sleep and more

daytime tiredness. A similar study by Galloway et al. (2013) reported that

excessive homework led to sleep deprivation, which can negatively affect

physical health. Educators should take into consideration the potential

consequences of giving excessive homework and aim for a balanced

approach to ensure academic success without endangering students’

cognitive, physical, emotional, or social well-being.

In the same study conducted by Sandoval (2021) found that having too

much work could really have negative implications for a student’s mental

health. Having too much work adds unnecessary stress, limits students’ social

lives, and can limit students’ time for leisure. If students want to make time for

leisure, they have to sacrifice their sleep and stay up until almost 1-2 in the

morning. Sacrificing sleep is in no way a small issue. Sleep is absolutely

crucial to the health and well-being of a teenager, as The American Academy

of Sleep Medicine has recommended that teenagers should get 8–10 hours of

City of Koronadal

sleep a night. Heavy academic workloads can cause feelings of nervousness

and anxiety, which can cause stress if they persist for a longer period of time

(Rahim et al., 2016). These studies indicate that too much homework can lead

to physical and mental health problems.

Overall, the research indicates that having too much homework can be

detrimental to students’ overall development, including their social, physical,

and mental health, academic achievement, productive time, family time, and

motivation and interest in learning.

Statement of the Problem

The study primarily aims to identify the impact of giving excessive

homework affecting the holistic aspect of KNCHS SHS students

Specifically, the study seeks to answer the following:

1. What are the implications of excessive homework on KNCHS SHS

Students’ holistic development?

2. What are the implications of the excessive homework on KNCHS

SHS Students’ well-being?

3. What are the strategies of KNCHS SHS students in coping with

homework demands?

Significance of the Study

This study provides insights into the impact of excessive homework on

KNCHS SHS students and is significant for other senior high school students,

educational institutions, teachers, parents, researchers, and future

researchers.

KNCHS SHS students will have their insights on how having too much

homework can affect their general well-being, academic achievement, and

quality of life. Students at KNCHS SHS can also make use of the research’s

findings to provide better guidelines for homework assignments and develop

fruitful study habits.

Educational institutions can use the results to create procedures and

policies that support student’s overall development and improve their rules

and procedures around homework.

Teachers might utilize the findings to change their policies around

homework assignments and provide helpful criticism and encouragement to

students.

Parents can benefit from the findings by communicating with teachers

and administration and assisting their kids in managing their time and

responsibilities.

Researchers can use the data to identify gaps in the literature and

design fresh research projects that look into the underlying mechanisms and

environmental factors that influence homework practices and results.

Future researchers can use the results to create studies, hypotheses,

and treatments that support productive and healthy homework habits.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study focuses on the impact of giving excessive homework on

KNCHS SHS students’ holistic development, academic performance, and

cognitive, emotional, physical, and social well-being. It will be conducted at

Koronadal National Comprehensive High School, particularly for students in
