Grade 10
Background of the Study

Learners' performances in the institution have been a concern for a long time.
Their environment has a significant impact on their well-being. A healthy, safe home
is necessary for a student to grow, learn, and explore. The interaction of the learner
and his surroundings plays a role in adopting the values and norms of society.
Learners' intellectual, social, and emotional development may be affected by a
problematic environment. As the student grows up, learning institutions and peers
begin to have a role in their intellectual socialization.

Different perspectives of the students, peer interaction, home environment, and

interest are some factors affecting student's behaviour and achievement. Parveen Et
al. (2017), unitedly conclude that among the said factors, the home environment is
the most influential. A home is the first institution where we begin to learn, and our
parents will be the first teacher. "Home environment" cannot be described when
children feel they are not at home. It consists of their physical and psychological
environment that majorly affects their perspectives.

According to Younas, M., & Noor, U. (2020), an environment is a combination of

interior and exterior circumstances that influences one's presence, growth, and
welfare. With the idea of encouraging families, presumption, educational activities,
and any other act of plan involving the development of the learners at home are
connected to social class, Noor, U. (2020). Households with contrasting social class
creates a gap in learning that affects learners' achievement.

Occasionally, we tend to think those engaging homes have a "good

environment." However, mostly these families happen to be disadvantaged in the
learning process. They may have a conflict between parents and much more of this.
A problematic home is not advantageous for learning. Furthermore, households with
poor states are most likely to have a proper environment filled with love, joy, and
respect.

Parents' support for giving courage and motivation to the student influences the
positive development of young learners, according to Srinivasan (2015).
Consequently, regarding these matters, this study looks at the concern for the
academic achievement of Grade 10 learners, parents' relationship with them, and its
effect on a student. Factors such as parents' status, encouragement, needed
necessities at home, and parents' treatment of learners are all included. Parental
involvement as a home environmental aspect for the learners is challenging. Thus,
family and its contribution to university students' academic achievement are worth
looking for.

Statement of the Problem

This research study aims to identify the factors affecting Grade 10 student’s
academic achievement and its influence in their behavior at the Philippine Academy
of Sakya Davao. It focuses on the interaction of the family members, family
background, parental styles, and performance pressure of the learner’s academic
achievement. In addition, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. Does parental encouragement provide an advantage to the Grade 10

learner’s academic achievement?
2. What factors in the home environment affect a Grade 10 student’s behavior
and academic achievement?
3. Do mostly Grade 10 student’s have been experiencing social pressure in
getting good grades?

The study “The Influence of Parent Education and Family Income on Child
Achievement:The Indirect Role of Parental Expectations and the Home Environment”
examined the process of parents' education and income, indirectly relating to
children’s academic achievement through their beliefs and behaviors. The subjects
were 868 8-12 years olds, divided equally between girls and boys (436 female, 433
males). The sample was 49% non-Hispanic European American and 47% African
American. Using this method the author found that the factors were indirectly related
to the parents beliefs and behaviors but the process of these factors are different by
racial group. Parents' years of schooling also was found to be an important factor to
take into consideration in the research.

Actually the study “PHILIPPINES: THE PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT AND ITS

RELATIONSHIP TO THE STUDENT'S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE”. Parental
involvement is one of the factors of successful students. COVID-19 pandemic
affected the living condition of societies and this results in implementation of the new
normal of education known as online learning. The study investigated the
relationship between parental involvement and the academic performance of the 493
participants in private school in the philippines. The study concluded that the parents
were still in the process of developing their involvement in school and also the
academic performance of the students was very satisfactory.

3. Local Study (Within the City / Region)

In fact the study “The Living Conditions of University Students in Boarding

Houses and Dormitories in Davao City, Philippines” is necessary for students who
came from far places. Students from neighbouring provinces and city outskirts live in
these temporary residences. This holds on the study that the physical environmental
components of these residential facilities could affect students well being. Data from
a survey involving (571) respondents and group discussion from selected groups of
students living in dorms, reveal that student’s stain dorms have contributions to their
personal, social, academic and emotional growth. Results demonstrate that dorms
possess good basic housing facilities however they felt the deficiency in safety and
security in the dorms.

Research Gap
We would like to answer why some students have the same home environment
but he/she doesn’t have the same academic achievement.

Research Problem

Studies have been shown that peer influence, performance pressure, and
parenting styles are an issue in the academic performance of a learner. The learner
may adopt such things if not undertaken properly by the parents. Especially
performance pressure caused by the high expectations of the family, set assigned
goals, and other factors. Whatever the cause, these pressures have been proven
harmful to the student’s mental health and may have serious reduction in academic
performance. Learner’s coming from problematic households majorly have issues in
concentrating in classroom lectures and unable to catch up on some of the topics
while studying at home. Thus, when student’s return home with a negative
atmosphere, it will affect their interest or will in studying.

The influence of family environment on students' academic performance has

attracted much attention in the adolescent environment of Grade 10. Parents'
demands on students' educational attainment and environment are subject to
constant debate. The purpose of this study (Zhao., 2022) is to investigate the
different views and ideas of each person, and to collect the most common facts that
are most consistent with the data conditions. This study used data from the China
Education Tracking Survey (CEPS); The study included a sample of 9,449 Grade 8
students (M age = 13.55 years, SD = 0.70) to establish a multi-level mediation effect
model. According to the data, (1) Family environment and peer interaction can
correctly guide and predict adolescents' academic achievement. (2) According to the
KHB test, peer communication quality played a partial mediating role in the positive
influence of family environment on academic achievement, with a mediating rate of
27.5%. (3) The educational expectation gap moderates the influence of the family
environment on academic achievement and peer interaction quality. Based on the
data collected and the results of our survey, they suggest that the environment and
atmosphere at home play an important role if students' academic achievement is to
be properly understood. Environment is not necessarily the main reason for their
influence, but students from good families tend to work harder and get higher grades
than those from poor families.

Limitations of the Study

1. Limited access to data – There is not enough study about this topic.

2. Time constraints – Not enough time available to do the research.

Definition of Terms

1. Physical and Psychological Environment – In this study, this refers to the

environment where learners must have: A healthy home and the learners
must have the right to receive proper welfare.

2. Co-education – A word used in this study that refers to a female student at a

co-educational college or university.

3. Social Pressure – It refers to the stress influenced by the environment in

educational accomplishment in the study.

4. Intelligent Quotient – It is used in the study where it measures the learner’s

intelligence including their mental capacity.

5. Multilevel Mediation Effect Model – It refers to how the result of an

independent variable on an outcome is transmitted in the study.

(Muola, & Muthee., 2010) This is a look for an investigation of the relationship
between academic achievement motivation and home environment. The study found
that these six environmental factors are positive like fathers occupation, mothers
occupation, fathers education, mothers education, family size, and learning facilities
at home. While academic motivation only parental encouragement was not a factor
in the academic motivation. It shows that students' motivation to do well in academic
work has to some extent have to do with their home environment. It is recommended
that parents need to be aware of their importance in their role as a parent that they
need to provide them with proper teaching at home.

(Egunsola., 2014), This study used a survey to investigate the influence of

home environment on academic performance of senior secondary students in
Adamawa State. The study consisted of 8,548 students, and the total sample was
drawn from the population with a 900 sample of students. The survey consists of a
40 item research designed questionnaire and consisting two parts A and B. The
result shows that parental educational qualification, occupation, and home location
were highly associated with students' academic performance while income and
affluence have moderate influence on their study. The study concluded that parents
and home environment have a significant influence on students' academic
performance.

( Franky & Chamundeswari., 2014), Student academic performance is greatly

influenced by many psychological and sociological related factors, such as attitudes, teacher
effectiveness, adaptability, socioeconomic status, home and school environment. This study
adopted a random sampling method and selected 96 public middle school students as research
objects to explore the social psychological factors affecting the academic performance of
adolescent students. According to the data analysis, coeducational students are superior in
socioeconomic status to boys in public schools. Coeducational students perform better
academically than boys and girls in public schools. The study also concluded that a student's
academic performance is influenced by the surrounding environment, including family and
society. For example, because of co-education, it will bring out the competitive spirit,
become positive, surpass each other.

(Chinwe, L.I. & Chinasa, O., 2016) Numerous factors affecting student’s
academic achievement including their home environment and interest in English
language. In the conclusion of the study in psychology and sociology of education,
there are ways to improve educational achievement. One example is Dewey’s theory
where he conducted that an experience is an interaction of one’s organism and his
environment. Social pressure in educational achievement, parent’s authority and
interest regarding learners' educational accomplishment, peer group, and any other
factors that could influence student’s academic achievement Behera & Makanya
(2015). A study concluded that intelligent quotient also affects academic
achievement and so as parent’s value for education. According to some of the
studies, communication at home affects student’s learning in the English language,
especially those learners from bilingual and multilingual households. This causes the
adoption of many Nigerian students at school to decrease the progress since many
failed in the English language for the reason that some learners are used to
communicating with the use of their communication language used at home. One
confirmed that when parents encourage children to expose themselves to different
experiences will help them to learn a lot of things before going to school. Thus,
providing educational materials that facilitate learning at home will be a great
advantage in adopting such things. In conclusion, “family” serves as the source of a
child's happiness and well-being, a source of stress, which can affect a student's
academic achievement. Most importantly, learning English at home helps
understanding certain topics and their applications in life.

(Esguerra., 2019), The number of students in the Philippines is increasing

and the population is aging. The increased demand of educators and facilities would
also meet their needs. Learning and adaptations in real life and in school reflect their
academic performance. As a result, the academic performance of students is always
the topic of interest for educators. However academic performance is more focused
on scores which does not indicate the real-life abilities and potentials of a student.

Methodology

Research Design and Instrument

The phenomenological research design of qualitative research will be used in

this study. Phenomenological design can provide necessary information that can be
used to further understand the participants' lived experiences with a particular
phenomenon. We will create a survey questionnaire to collect the necessary data. A
test will be supervised to assess the respondents' academic performance. To collect
the answers, we will use a table.

QUESTIONS

1. Is the “home environment” you are living in keeps you motivated in your
daily life as a student?

2. Did you ever suffer from a mental breakdown that affected your daily life as
a student?

3. Have you experienced involving your classmates in the problem you are
going through because of the problem you are keeping in?

4. Do your parents make you feel pressure to get good grades?

5. Have you ever realized that you are acting differently in school and at
home?

The researchers will conduct ten (10) questions for the mean time which will
somehow help us collect answers that would support our research study. The
questionnaire will be printed on short bond paper, and the researchers will distribute
it to the respondents during the data-gathering procedures. With this instrument, it
will give us further view regarding this study.

Research Locale and Respondents

This research will be carried out at the Philippine Academy of Sakya Davao
Incorporated (PASDI). The researchers believe that the location is appropriate for
the study. Given that it is a school, students may have different experiences and
opinions in terms of their mental health and life as a student, as we have different
perspectives.

The respondents of this study are all the Grade 10 students at the Philippine
Academy of Sakya Davao Incorporated, which consists of one (1) section with a total
number of 31 students. The researchers will not choose specific students but will
interview all of the learners as the number of students do seem to be likely small.
The researchers ensure all Grade 10 students will be interviewed.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will have to enter the respondents' designated classroom.

Following that, each researcher will introduce themselves and inform the
respondents of the main purpose of the study: that the researchers will conduct the
data-gathering procedures required for the study. The researchers will give the
respondents 20 minutes to complete the 10-item questionnaires they have prepared.
As a result, respondents have 30 seconds to respond to each of the questions.
