Grade 10
Background of the Study
Learners' performances in the institution have been a concern for a long time.
Their environment has a significant impact on their well-being. A healthy, safe home
is necessary for a student to grow, learn, and explore. The interaction of the learner
and his surroundings plays a role in adopting the values and norms of society.
Learners' intellectual, social, and emotional development may be affected by a
problematic environment. As the student grows up, learning institutions and peers
begin to have a role in their intellectual socialization.
Parents' support for giving courage and motivation to the student influences the
positive development of young learners, according to Srinivasan (2015).
Consequently, regarding these matters, this study looks at the concern for the
academic achievement of Grade 10 learners, parents' relationship with them, and its
effect on a student. Factors such as parents' status, encouragement, needed
necessities at home, and parents' treatment of learners are all included. Parental
involvement as a home environmental aspect for the learners is challenging. Thus,
family and its contribution to university students' academic achievement are worth
looking for.
This research study aims to identify the factors affecting Grade 10 student’s
academic achievement and its influence in their behavior at the Philippine Academy
of Sakya Davao. It focuses on the interaction of the family members, family
background, parental styles, and performance pressure of the learner’s academic
achievement. In addition, it seeks to answer the following questions:
Supporting Study
The study “The Influence of Parent Education and Family Income on Child
Achievement:The Indirect Role of Parental Expectations and the Home Environment”
examined the process of parents' education and income, indirectly relating to
children’s academic achievement through their beliefs and behaviors. The subjects
were 868 8-12 years olds, divided equally between girls and boys (436 female, 433
males). The sample was 49% non-Hispanic European American and 47% African
American. Using this method the author found that the factors were indirectly related
to the parents beliefs and behaviors but the process of these factors are different by
racial group. Parents' years of schooling also was found to be an important factor to
take into consideration in the research.
Research Gap
We would like to answer why some students have the same home environment
but he/she doesn’t have the same academic achievement.
Research Problem
Studies have been shown that peer influence, performance pressure, and
parenting styles are an issue in the academic performance of a learner. The learner
may adopt such things if not undertaken properly by the parents. Especially
performance pressure caused by the high expectations of the family, set assigned
goals, and other factors. Whatever the cause, these pressures have been proven
harmful to the student’s mental health and may have serious reduction in academic
performance. Learner’s coming from problematic households majorly have issues in
concentrating in classroom lectures and unable to catch up on some of the topics
while studying at home. Thus, when student’s return home with a negative
atmosphere, it will affect their interest or will in studying.

(Muola, & Muthee., 2010) This is a look for an investigation of the relationship
between academic achievement motivation and home environment. The study found
that these six environmental factors are positive like fathers occupation, mothers
occupation, fathers education, mothers education, family size, and learning facilities
at home. While academic motivation only parental encouragement was not a factor
in the academic motivation. It shows that students' motivation to do well in academic
work has to some extent have to do with their home environment. It is recommended
that parents need to be aware of their importance in their role as a parent that they
need to provide them with proper teaching at home.

(Chinwe, L.I. & Chinasa, O., 2016) Numerous factors affecting student’s
academic achievement including their home environment and interest in English
language. In the conclusion of the study in psychology and sociology of education,
there are ways to improve educational achievement. One example is Dewey’s theory
where he conducted that an experience is an interaction of one’s organism and his
environment. Social pressure in educational achievement, parent’s authority and
interest regarding learners' educational accomplishment, peer group, and any other
factors that could influence student’s academic achievement Behera & Makanya
(2015). A study concluded that intelligent quotient also affects academic
achievement and so as parent’s value for education. According to some of the
studies, communication at home affects student’s learning in the English language,
especially those learners from bilingual and multilingual households. This causes the
adoption of many Nigerian students at school to decrease the progress since many
failed in the English language for the reason that some learners are used to
communicating with the use of their communication language used at home. One
confirmed that when parents encourage children to expose themselves to different
experiences will help them to learn a lot of things before going to school. Thus,
providing educational materials that facilitate learning at home will be a great
advantage in adopting such things. In conclusion, “family” serves as the source of a
child's happiness and well-being, a source of stress, which can affect a student's
academic achievement. Most importantly, learning English at home helps
understanding certain topics and their applications in life.

Methodology
QUESTIONS
1. Is the “home environment” you are living in keeps you motivated in your
daily life as a student?
2. Did you ever suffer from a mental breakdown that affected your daily life as
a student?
3. Have you experienced involving your classmates in the problem you are
going through because of the problem you are keeping in?
5. Have you ever realized that you are acting differently in school and at
home?
The researchers will conduct ten (10) questions for the mean time which will
somehow help us collect answers that would support our research study. The
questionnaire will be printed on short bond paper, and the researchers will distribute
it to the respondents during the data-gathering procedures. With this instrument, it
will give us further view regarding this study.
This research will be carried out at the Philippine Academy of Sakya Davao
Incorporated (PASDI). The researchers believe that the location is appropriate for
the study. Given that it is a school, students may have different experiences and
opinions in terms of their mental health and life as a student, as we have different
perspectives.
The respondents of this study are all the Grade 10 students at the Philippine
Academy of Sakya Davao Incorporated, which consists of one (1) section with a total
number of 31 students. The researchers will not choose specific students but will
interview all of the learners as the number of students do seem to be likely small.
The researchers ensure all Grade 10 students will be interviewed.
