The YMCA and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) jointly released

regulations in 1916. The National YMCA Physical Education Committee held the country's
inaugural national competition in New York City in 1922. The United States Volleyball
Association (USVBA), which was established in 1928, is acknowledged as the country's
governing and rule-making organization. With the exception of 1944 and 1945, the USVBA—
now known as USA Volleyball (USAV)—has held yearly national volleyball championships for
men and senior men (age 35 and above) since 1928. Its women's section was established in 1949,
and in 1977, a senior women's division for participants 30 years of age and above was
introduced.
