INTRODUCTION
Mudra is a term with diverse meanings.It signifies a gesture,a mystic
position of the hands,a seal or even a symbol.Though mudras are
associated with hand gesture there are eye positions,body postures and
breathing techniques also that are called mudras.
The word mudra represents ‘gesture’ or ‘attitude’.Mudras express
psychic,emotional,devotional and aesthetic gestures or attitudes.
Mudras are a combination of a set of subtle physical movements that
alter mood,attitude and perception,deepening awareness and
concentration.
THE HISTORY OF MUDRAS
Lord Shiva was said to be the first exponent of Mudras.
According to the tantric texts, he revealed this abundant knowledge to Devi Parvati.
This signifies that knowledge is not easily accessible even to the gods.
Only a clear and undisturbed mind can practice Mudra and attain its full benefits.
It has appeared in various religious and traditions including Hinduism, Buddism,
Christianity, Egyptian, Tantric rituals, Roman Arts, Asian Martial arts, Taoism and
Indian classical dance.
Modern medicines are double edged swords. They have immediate impact but can
produce side effects too.
They are very expensive whereas mudra therapy is cost free, has no side effects and
easy to comprehend.
BENEFITS OF MUDRAS
Mudras are an excellent alternative therapy. They act naturally are simple and gentle
and work on regaining our health without any difficulties.
Mudras do not use any medicines or external applications. Therefore it is free of
chemical reactions and side-effects.
Mudra being universal they can be performed anywhere anytime and by anybody.
All kinds of illness simple or serious can be cured by Mudras
By performing Mudras regularly one can utilise time profitably and can attain
Radiant health.
Mudras even help the semi-conscious people and unconscious people.
MUDRAS AND PANCHA MAHABHUTAS
Ayurveda strongly believes that everything is made up of five basic elements in
this universe.
These five elements are collectively known as Panchamahabhutas.
MUDRAS AND ACUPRESSURE
Traditional Chinese medicine is based on the knowledge of ‘Qi’ which refers to energy
as a life force .
Acupuncture and yoga mudras have many features in common both systems
emphasize and use similar principals.The dual qualities within nature are represented by
yin-yang and ida-pimgla,the existence of five elements that provide the whole
universe,the meridians and nadis;Qi and Prana;Acupuncture points and chakras
According to Acupuncture we have 5 elements which resembles the Mudra Therapy
also.
So now let us discuss these mudras connected to the 5 elements of Acupuncture.
1.FIRE ELEMENT
APANA VAYU MUDRA
Benefits-first aid for heart attacks
It balances the 3 doshas vata-pitta-kapha
Lessens heart palpitations,heartache,anxiety,panic.
As well as improves the digestive fire.
By practicing regularly by heart patients it prevents the
reoccurance of heart attacks.
AKASHA MUDRA

LINGA MUDRA

cold obstruction in the body.

and neck pain.

AIR ELEMENT
1.PRANA MUDRA

1.PUSHAN MUDRA

This mudra is a combination of apana mudra and vyan mudra.
Regular practice of this mudra is a best remedy for high blood
pressure and low blood pressure.
According to acupressure it is a pressure centres for gastric
problems,indigestion,acidity,constipation and also fatty liver.
This mudra has a relaxing effect on spleen,stomach,liver and
gall bladder.
Hence regulates energies automatically in nervous system.
2.MATANGI MUDRA

Practicing this mudra is really good for the digestive system. It

THE FIVE BASIC FINGER POSITIONS
1. Joining your thumb tip to a fingertip encourages stability in the linked element.
2. Touching the back of a finger nail decreases the linked element’s influence.
3. Bringing your thumb to the base of any finger stimulates the linked element.
4. When your palm faces upward ,you open to receiving inspiration and energy.
5. When your palm faces downwards,you become more grounded.
GUIDELINES FOR PRACTICING MUDRAS
Even though most mudras are simple enough to be practised anytime ,anywhere, a systematic
approach is required .If the guidelines are not followed the practise may not be effective or
desirable result may not be achieved ,it may result in physical and mental imbalance.
TIME OF PRACTICE-Mudra sadhana should ideally be practised in the early mornings that is
BRAHMA MUHURTAM when the body and mind are calm and refreshed after sleep and the
pranas are balanced and are ready to be awakened. As our bowels will also be empty at this time
the practice of mudras will be beneficial.
PLACE OF PRACTICE-The place of the sadhana should be calm and peaceful. One may
practice this in the open air or a well ventilated and clean and pleasant room. Avoid practising in
the sun or the wind.
CLOTHING-Loose and comfortable clothing.
POSTURE-Unless specifically stated otherwise, Mudras can be practised in comfortable
meditation posture ,sitting on a chair or lying in shavasana.
FINGER CONTACT-When performing the mudra make a light contact
between the thumb and fingers.

BREATHING-Try to keep your lips gently sealed and breathe through your
nose. Just observe the gentle inhale and exhale with your eyes closed.

DURATION-Mudras should be practised from 15 mins to 45 mins daily. If not


possible atleast 15 mins a day in 3 intervals i.e 5 mins each time you practice.
There must be a gap of 2 to 3 hours after your meals. Practicing mudra as soon
you eat reverses the flow of energy.
PRECAUTIONS & CONTRAINDICATIONS

Mudras should not be practiced by preagnant ladies [only under expert advice].
Avoid during Menopause, chronic ulcers, eye disorders , chronic back
inflammation , chronic hypertension.
Mudras should not be practiced by a woman immediate after delivery.
People suffering from shoulder , wrist , ankle and neck injuries should practise
only under the advice of experts..
Avoid practicing mudras immediate after having food, there must be a gap of 2
to 3 hours.
