COURSE SYLLABUS
1. CATALOG DESCRIPTION
Course Number: WELD1070
Course Title Advanced SMAW and GMAW
Prerequisite(s): WELD1060
Catalog Description: Advanced classroom lecture and laboratory exercises with Shielded
Metal Arc and Gas Metal Arc equipment and processes. Note: this class will not meet
welding program criteria and is not available to students wishing to enter the welding
program.
2. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
SMAW
Use of personal protection equipment required.
Attach leads to power source to produce correct polarity.
Set power source to correct amperage for any given electrode.
Remove welds using both round and flat electrodes with CAC-A.
Properly set-up CAC-A equipment to remove welds.
Weld on carbon steel in all positions.
Follow Welding Procedure Specifications as required on certain welds.
GMAW
Discuss and demonstrate proper set-up of a GMAW power source.
Gas Metal Arc weld various joints and configurations.
Gas Metal Arc weld carbon steel in all positions on various joints.
3. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES AND GENERAL EDUCATION LEARNING OUTCOMES:
SMAW
Understand the safe operation of the Shielded Metal Arc Welding process.
Demonstrate the proper setup and operation of a Shielded Metal Arc welder
with various electrodes.
Shielded Metal Arc weld carbon steel on various types of joints and with various
electrodes.
Demonstrate the proper setup and operation of the Air Carbon Arc equipment
with various types of electrodes.
Air Carbon Arc cut and gouge various metals.
GMAW
Demonstrate ability to setup and weld with a GMAW machine.
Understand the safe operation of the GMAW process.
Gas metal arc weld in the flat, horizontal and vertical positions.
Successfully weld various joints.

6. METHODS OF PRESENTATION/INSTRUCTION
Presentation methods may include, but are not limited to, lecture, small and large group
discussion, video presentation, transparencies, demonstrations, project boards, flip charts,
handouts, observations, assigned lab projects, and field trips.
7. METHODS OF EVALUATION
Methods of evaluation typically include a combination of the following:
Notebook (if required)
Quizzes
Tests
Lab grades
Attendance/Class conduct
Letter grades will be based on the SCC Standard Grade Scale Policy
