English Department Supervisor

School Program
Address, ZIP. State

Dear English Department Supervisor,

“When you get, give. When you learn, teach.” -Maya Angelou

Throughout my life, I have been blessed with teachers who have given of themselves to instill in
me both academic and life skills. It is my strong desire to pay this forward and give back to the
teaching community through leaving a positive impact on future generations.

I used this quote as the opener to my college scholarship, known as the Casey Feldman
Memorial Scholarship. I chose to include this quote here as well because it is the main
foundation of my teaching philosophy and overall aspiration to become a teacher. I am hopeful
that your school will be a strong fit for me as I am a creative and driven individual and am
desirous of giving back to the teaching community.

As an upcoming University of Delaware graduate (May 2024) in Secondary English Education

with a minor in Spanish, I was excited to learn of the English teacher position opening for the
upcoming school year at your institution. While I have been an undergraduate, I have had
numerous opportunities to be an observer and assistant in classrooms throughout New Castle
County in Delaware. Teaching in 9th grade ELA, 10th grade honors American Literature, and
my current student teaching placement in 7th grade honors and inclusion ELA has allowed me to
expand my understanding of instruction and knowledge of literature. This valuable experience
has equipped me to develop differentiated lesson plans that engage all students, grow my
understanding and approaches with classroom management, and incorporate various methods of
technology into the classroom.

I appreciate the opportunity to apply and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Abigail Hess
