CON4037S– CIVIL ENGINEERING MEASUREMENT NOVEMBER EXAM 2011

1. Three hours are allowed for this paper. An additional 30 minutes will be
allowed for candidates to study the question paper, the drawings and prepare
their measurement methodology.

2. A maximum of 100 marks have been allocated.

3. The examination format is NOT open book. Candidates are permitted to


measure the work shown on the drawings using electronic software such as
EngPlus and WinQS, which are available in UCT’s CADLAB. Candidates are
prohibited from contacting anyone on-line while using the measurement
software, or using/accessing any other software and/or internet sites or
accessing any digital information during the examination period, unless
otherwise stated below.

4. Candidates are NOT permitted to introduce any pre-prepared documentation


into the examination.

5. The folder entitled “3_Course Material/SANS Documents” under Resources


on the CON4037S,2011 CEM VULA worksite., contains SANS1200 and
SANS0120 documentation, which candidates are permitted to access during
the examination period.

6. Work to be measured in accordance with the SANS1200C, D and G.

7. Where dimensions are not given they should be calculated from the
drawings. Only where dimensions are not given or cannot be calculated, may
dimensions be scaled.

8. Candidates are to assume their own specification in respect of materials or


workmanship not mentioned. These assumptions must be recorded either by
hand in an examination booklet or electronically in a separate word/excel
document, which is to be submitted along with the candidates’ examination
answer.

9. Candidates are NOT required to print out their electronic submissions.

10. Candidates are to attempt both questions. The naming of electronic


submissions shall be as follows:
a. All EngPlus and WinQS files are to be named with the question
number followed by the candidate’s student number, e.g.
Q1_XYZABC001.wb1 or Q2_XYZABC003.mdb; and
b. All supporting documentation in Word or Excel are to be named with
the question number followed by the candidate’s student number, e.g.
Q2_XYZABC003.doc or .xls.
Note: It is your responsibility to check that your file has been correctly

uploaded - ensure that it is not 0kB and has been correctly named.

11. Candidates are to hand-in and/or submit all documentation by no later than
11h30, 3 November 2011. Electronic submissions may only be uploaded
under the assessment named “CON4037S_November 2011 Exam” opened
under Tests & Quizzes on the CON4037S,2011 CEM Vula site. No other
forms of submission will be accepted.

13. Attention will be given to proper planning, systematic and orderly method of
“taking off”, well referenced and accurate dimensions, clear descriptions and
well edited work. The allocation of marks for measured work is broken down
as follows:

Understanding of technology/reading of 30

Measurement (take off): descriptions and 40
quantities
Professionalism 10
Total 100

14. In the allocation of marks for discussions, attention will be given to proper
planning, systematic and orderly method of conveying thoughts in point
format. Repetition of information, inclusion of unnecessary information,
incorrect syntax and spelling errors, will be penalised.

QUESTION 1 [90%]

Refer to Drawing no. Q5-031

Prepare a draft Bill of Quantities for the work indicated on the drawing in accordance
with the relevant SANS specifications listed on the cover page and the notes listed
on page 4, excluding the Preliminaries section.

QUESTION 2 [10%]

Discuss your view on the role quantity surveyors can play in civil engineering
projects, with reference to your recent Civil Engineering Simulated Office Project as
well as in the construction industry.

1. All excavation is deemed “soft”
