GEM 321E – NAE 311 SHIP THEORY

TERM PROJECT I - HYDROSTATIC CURVES

1. In this project, each student will calculate hydrostatic characteristics of a

unique ship (Series 60) assigned to him/her and draw the pertinent
hydrostatic curves accordingly.
2. First, calculate the hydrostatic characteristics of your ship by using the offsets
table given to you. Then, draw the related hydrostatic curves by using an
appropriate scale for each curve. Each curve or group of curves may have
different scales and a different reference point. Standard Simpson’s 1st rule
and tables should be utilized for the calculations.
3. The following characteristics must be calculated up to waterline 6 (WL6):
Volume (V), displacement (∆), non-dimensional form coefficients (CB, CP, CM,
CWL), Location of center of buoyancy (LCB, VCB), TPC, MTC, KM, KML, LCF.
4. Excel worksheets or any other suitable software (Matlab, Mathematica,
MathCAD etc.) may be used for the calculations. However, all calculations
must be shown clearly in the written report. AutoCAD or a similar graphics
software may be utilized for the drawings.
5. Bon-Jean sectional areas and sectional area moments must be calculated
and drawn separately as well.
6. The written reports shall be printed on A4 size papers whereas Bonjean area
curves and moments shall be plotted on a A3 size paper.
7. The scales on the drawings shall be indicated clearly. Captions on the curves
must also be placed as appropriate.
8. Entire project has to be prepared by using writing rules of a technical report.
9. The due date is not going to be postponed under any circumstances.
10. The offsets tables dedicated to your name are available at the website and
ready to download. (https://web.itu.edu.tr/taylan/ship%20theory/Proje-
1_2021/Seri60_ofset_hesaplama_2021.htm)
11. Please do not forget that submission of the projects are the requirements for
the final exam.
12. Cheating on the project is subject to penalties according to the regulations for
all the parties involved.
13. All communication (questions, problems, submission of project etc.) about the
project should be done by Res.Assist. İbrahim Pınar (Room No.112 in the
basement, e-mail: pinarib@itu.edu.tr).
14. The projects will be collected from each student following an interview to
make sure that it is carried out by him/her personally.
15. Interview schedule must be arranged with Mr. İbrahim Pinar in advance.
16. Please submit your written report and e-mail your calculations to
pinarib@itu.edu.tr
