Empowering Youth

It should be understood that the future development of any nation depends on harnessing
the creative and productive potential of its youth. This can only happen if we empower young
people. Any society with a high percentage of disillusioned youth is steering towards serious
long-term social problems. It is therefore imperative that those who have the primary task of
managing and governing our societies should not wait for a catastrophic collapse before embarking
on any programme of policies that can impact young people positively. It is no longer front-page
news that young people from so-called socially and economically challenged backgrounds are
involved in criminal activities.

The evidence is clear: the impact of crime on the development of Caribbean economies
is significant. According to the Caribbean Human Development Report 2012, crime has become
one ofthe main challenges that threaten the economies and the quality of life in Caribbean countries.
The Report, however, suggests that with appropriate social and economic programmes that target
young people, high levels of violence can be stemmed. What must happen is that, our homes,
schools, and communities should provide young people with alternatives to crime and violence.
=ta{i-
j=f

.-r*t.
The experiences of Caribbean youth are not unique. Youth in the UK, for example, especially .!(.-
:-__
those of Caribbean descent, face similar challenges of high unemployment, high school exclusion, \
and drug use, made worse by inequality, racial discrimination, and poverty. To these must be
added very high rates of deadly lifestyle diseases, as compared to their fellows in the Caribbean.

We must be cautious, however, as not all unemployed, undereducated and disillusioned

-l
youths turn to crime. Many see the rewards of engaging in constructive activities as ways to
becoming empowered and to avoiding being attracted to destructive behaviours. Many at-risk
youths have turned out well in spite of the multitude of challenges within our communities. They
have not fallen victim to the stereotypes that portray them as being without hope. The success stories
include and go beyond music, entertainment, and sports. Young entrepreneurs are emerging and
are becoming strong role models for other young people, creating employment for themselves and
others. They are not waiting on others to empower them. They are not giving in to the negative
image others focus on. They are taking charge by thinking big and working smart.

The Castaways

The vivid grass with visible delight

Springing triumphant from the pregnant earth,
The butterflies and flowers in brief flight
Dancing and chirping for the season's birth,
5 The dandelions and rare daffodils
That touch the deep-stirred heart with hands of gold,
The thrushes sending forth their joyous thrills,-
Not these, not these did I at flrst behold!
But seated on the benches daubed with green,
10 The castaways of life, a few asleep,
Some withered women desolate and mean
And over all, life's shadows dark and deep.
Moaning turned away, for misery
I have the strength to bear but not to see.

The Kashmir Bar

The two brothers who owned and operated the Kashmir Bar and Restaurant on Middle
Street could not have been more dissimilar. Ashoka, the elder, was a dreamy romantic: long-haired -..\
and bearded, he looked like a sage or holy man, his grey eyes frequently retracting to distant
landscapes that only he could see. Romesh, the younger brother, was clean-shaven and practical;
s his eyes were dark and unexpressive people said that he was the real businessman, the man of
-
numbers, who did the accounts and kept the business running. He spent most of his time at his
desk in the office.

Ashoka was always at the bar, chatting with the customers; Romesh had few words for
anyone he did not consider rich or important. In his opinion, Ashoka moved far too slowly for the
10 world they lived in and wasted too much time being nice to people; there was no profit in being
nice and Romesh was always expressing impatience or disapproval of his brother's fanciful ideas
and lack ofbusiness sense.

In August 1988 the Kashmir Bar and Restaurant shrank to one small storeroom for three
weeks while the place was renovated and enlarged. Romesh considered this a testimony to the
15 success of the business due, he was certain, to his own acumen. Ashoka, on the other hand
- sprang from the relaxing atmosphere
considered that their success and pleasant conversation which
attracted customers and for which he, Ashoka, was largely responsible.
.E-
:_+ii
On the last Friday afternoon in August, while the workers were putting the finishing
touches to the new ddcor and varnishing the impressively large purpleheart counter of the bar,
20 Ashoka invited a dozen or so customers in the temporary room to have a preview of the new space.
Romesh, who had been supervising the last tasks of the workers, did not conceal his annoyance ,f-tr
when Ashoka marched in, followed by his customers. When eyes had adjusted to the reduced light
in the new room everyone looked around and took in the innovations, remarking in subdued
tones because of Romesh's obvious annoyance items that caught their attention.-

Drug Testing

Most of us know that cancer, heart disease and stroke are the leading causes of death
in the West. But many people would be surprised by the next biggest killer: the side effects of ,.t

found that animal tests predicted the human side effects only six out of 114 times. Hundreds of
t

drugs used to treat strokes have been found safe and effective in animal studies, and then injured
or killed patients in"clinical trials.

Dr Richard Klausner, former director of the US National Cancer Institute lamented that the
history of cancer research has been a history of curing cancer in the mouse. "We have cured mice
of cancer for decades , anditsimply did not work on humans." Cigarette smoke, asbestos, arsenic,
benzene, alcohol and glass flbres are all safe to ingest, according to animal studies. Penicillin, the

on rabbits, and would have been shelved forever had it been tested on guinea pigs, which it kills.
Even the Handbook of Laboratory Animal Science admits that uncritical reliance on the results of
animal tests can be dangerously misleading and has cost the health and lives of tens of thousands
of humans. €.E

So why use animals to test new drugs? It has been known among scientists and the
pharmaceutical industry for decades that animal testing is scientiflcally unreliable, but in 1964
Dr J. Gallager, medical director of Lederle Laboratories, admitted that animal studies are done for
legal, and not scientific reasons. So, pharmaceutical companies conduct animal tests simply to
satis$z government regulations. Most importantly, animal data also provide liability protection when
drugs kill or injure people. The industry can point to rigorous animal tests they have performed,
and claim that they have done their best to ensure against tragedies occurring.

There is no getting away from the fact that people have to be the ultimate guinea pigs for
testing new treatments. Clearly, the health and safety of research volunteers and patients should
be paramount and the best safeguards should be in place to protect them.

2. Read the poem below carefully and then answer all the questions that follow. Write your
answer on the ruled lines provided after each question.

Tales of the Islands

I watched the island narrowing, the fine

Writing of foam around the shore, then
The roads as small and casual as twine
Between the mountains; I looked until the plane
5 Turned to the final north and turned above
The open channel, and the quiet sea between
The fisherman's islets, until all that I love
Was lost in cloud. I watched the shallow green
That marked the places where there must be reef,
l0 The silver glinting on the fuselagex, each mile
Dividing us, and all fidelity strained
Till space would break it, and then after a while E
I thought of nothing, nothing I knew would change. !*-
When we arrived at Seawell, it had rained.

3. Read the passage below carefully and then answer all the questions that follow. Write your
answer on the ruled lines provided after each question.

Family members develop a healthy foundation when they learn to communicate with
each other in an honest and open way. When conflict does arise, the family that has developed
healthy communication habits can work through and resolve the issues that develop. This means
that family members are able to listen quietly and understand most, if not everything another
s family member is saying, verbally and nonverbally. When these conditions exist, the chance of .tl
misunderstanding is lessened. t
Families are important in our lives because they create, clarify and develop our first
concepts of relationships. They provide a sense of belonging and support, encourage learning
about relationships, provide mental models of friendship, and help to shape views of romantic
l0 relationships. But like all relationships, families experience conflict which can be a source of
frustration.
:IE-
There should be appreciation for each relationship individually, but all family members $

should be seen as important people in life. Improving communication in families requires listening
and oral communication skills. Conflict should be handled constructively and openly with realistic -

views sensitively.

Aloe Vera: The Thorny Balm

Aloe vera is literally a pharmacy in a plant. Its gel contains seventy-five minerals an~ eig~1teen amino
acids and vitamins. For centuries it has been used medicinally, including as a mo1stunzer, to treat
bums and skin conditions, for hair loss, acne, and endless other purposes. The aloe vera plant can
be found in many backyards in the Caribbean. While you'll find the occasional person growing aloe
merely for decorative purposes, it's commonly used as a laxative, or to aid with digestion. 1n some of
the Caribbean islands like Barbados and St Vincent and the Grenadines, parents and grandparents rub
it on the hands of children to discourage them from sucking their fingers. There's even an old legend
about keeping it in the kitchen to guard against evil. Some people mix it with citrus or mango juice,
but that barely masks the cutting bitterness. Today, do-it-yourself enthusiasts are experimenting and
creating charming cosmetic inventions as well.

One plant with so many uses should make aloe a way of life - and, in Aruba, it already is. A
drive around the island reveals that Aruba is one of the driest places in the Caribbean. Cacti grow
haphazardly and at times form natural residential fences. Even the country's highest point, called the
Hay Stack, is covered in cacti and succulent plants. One of these species is a gem in plain sight-the
aloe vera plant.

The aloe industry in Aruba dates back to the eighteenth century, when Mon Plaisir and Socotoro
were the largest producers. In the 1920s, two thirds of the island were covered with "lily of the
desert" - an old name for the aloe - and to commemorate the plant as one of Aruba's first sources
of substantial income, aloe appears on the country's coat of arms. While other islands around the
Caribbean exported sugar, bananas, coffee, cocoa, citrus, nutmeg, and other crops, Aruba was steadily
cultivating aloe and successfully distributing aloe-based products around the globe - aptly earning
the name Island of Aloes.
