already married and have families of their own, but Anastacio lives with his family in
Profisita’s house. Additionally, Profisita helps Anastacio take care of his children by assisting
with basic tasks such as cooking, housecleaning, and selling food items like kakanin, snacks,
and viand to their neighbors as a source of income, so she doesn’t have to rely too much on
her son, Anastacio, for her maintenance medication.

The family resides in a large wooden house with four bedrooms, a kitchen, and a
spacious living room. They use a septic tank toilet and depend on a shared faucet provided
by the barangay as their source of water. The head of the family is her third child, son

Payong-payong driver but still has a monthly debt of 2,000 pesos for the vehicle. He is
committed to providing for his three children and meeting all the needs of the family. The
income that Anastacio earns from being a Payong-payong driver is insufficient for the family,
and they often face shortages of food and financial resources. Additionally, the monthly
payment for the Payong-payong he is using amounts to P2,000.00.

C. Definition of Problem

Profisita, a senior citizen and a widow, who is dependent on her son Anastacio but
has taken over the care of Anastacio's children so she won't be too burdened, especially
with feeding them every day. In addition, she has already maintenance because of her
high blood pressure and she cannot buy her maintenance, sometimes there is free
medicine from the center but sometimes it is out of stock.

environment for her family. The inconsistency in financial support and the shortage of
food resources are the primary concerns that need to be addressed in the helping

Guipos, Zamboanga Del Sur. She is a senior citizen and a widow in which become a
member of religious congregations and a businesswoman.

She is a 66-year-old woman, a widow, and her husband has passed away. She
is a very approachable and sociable person, known for being hardworking, strong, and
empowering as a mother and grandmother. With a stocky build, Norma has short dyed
hair and remains dedicated to her role as a mother of three children – one girl and two
boys. She is always ensuring that she fulfills her obligations to her family. Despite her
age, she manages household chores, prepares meals, and even engages in small-scale
entrepreneurship by selling rugs and food in their neighborhood. She shoulders a lot of
responsibilities, showcasing her resilience and dedication.

The family resides in a partially constructed house, with half made of concrete
and half made of wood, still awaiting completion. The dwelling comprises a single small
bedroom, a compact kitchen area, and limited space for a living room. Their sanitation
facilities consist of a water-sealed toilet, and they rely on a shared water faucet
provided by the barangay. Norma is the homeowner, and she shares the household
with her daughter, Marites, who is currently battling an illness, along with Marites'
three young children. Norma plays a dual role, caring for both her ailing daughter and
her grandchildren. Heading the family is Orlan Blanco, who is single-handedly
responsible for providing for their needs. Orlan is a farmer who also undertakes
additional work within the community. While Orlan contributes 1,500.00 at times, it is
not a consistent source of income. On occasion, Norma’s daughter Myrna also
provides financial support to meet their daily needs. The family's living situation depicts
their strength and resilience in the face of adversity, as they cope with the challenges
posed by their modest living conditions, health concerns, and fluctuating income.

C. Definition of the Problem

Following the assessment conducted by the undersigned worker, it is evident

that the family is grappling with significant financial hardships. The lack of funds has
resulted in an inability to purchase essential medication for Norma’s daughter, Marites.
Additionally, the inconsistent financial support from her son and daughter further
exacerbates the family’s challenges. Despite these difficulties, Norma continues to
shoulder substantial responsibilities, particularly in caring for her three grandchildren,
all of whom are pursuing their education, with two in high school and one in college. To
meet their needs, Norma must constantly seek ways to provide not only for their daily
necessities but also to cover educational expenses. Despite some of the grandchildren
being beneficiaries of the 4Ps program, the allocations are insufficient to cover the
college tuition of Dexter, who is enrolled at Southern Mindanao Colleges, as well as the
miscellaneous fees for the high school students.
This situation illustrates the profound strain on Norma as she endeavors to
manage the family’s financial constraints while prioritizing the education and well-being
of her grandchildren.

daughter’s illness.

ongoing treatment for Norma's daughter's illness.

B. Problem to be Worked

The majority of Senior Citizens who are widowed continue to bear responsibilities
and endure illnesses that can significantly impact their daily lives. Based on the assessment,
it is evident that these Widowed Senior Citizens are facing not only the burden of their own
responsibilities and health issues but also the additional challenge of having inadequate
income. Their financial situation is worsened by the fact that their son or daughter, who is
the head of the family, does not consistently provide them with financial support for their
daily needs. Furthermore, these Senior Citizens have taken on the responsibility of caring for
their grandchildren, as their son or daughter has entrusted them with this duty. These
Widowed Senior Citizens often encounter this problem due to factors such as poverty. One
major reason is that the children of these elderly parents, who are the ones burdened with
responsibilities, are passed on to their aging parents. The children of elderly parents should
assess their parents’ circumstances to determine if they are still capable of taking on the
responsibility of caring for their grandchildren. Additionally, it is crucial to consider their
willingness, cooperation, and support in meeting their children’s financial needs and
maintaining their overall well-being. There has indeed been a lack of serious consideration
for the significant concerns faced by the elderly, and this may be due in part to the
prevailing view that the population is generally young. It’s essential to shed more light on
the challenges experienced by widowed senior citizens who often find themselves taking
care of their grandchildren despite their advanced age. This situation can place a
considerable strain on their physical and emotional well-being, as they may lack the energy
and resources that are needed to effectively care for young children.

Furthermore, many elderly individuals struggle with the lack of maintenance and
proper nutrition, which can have adverse effects on their health. This includes a shortage of
essential vitamins and minerals that are necessary for maintaining overall well-being.
Additionally, financial difficulties are a significant concern for many elderly individuals,
particularly those who are living on fixed incomes or limited savings. This can hinder their
access to vital resources and healthcare services, further exacerbating their challenges.

Another important aspect to consider is the emotional impact of missing loved ones.
For many elderly individuals, the loss of friends and family members can lead to feelings of
isolation and loneliness. This emotional burden can have serious implications for their
mental health and overall quality of life. It’s crucial to recognize and address these
multifaceted challenges faced by the elderly to provide the necessary support and resources
to improve their well-being.

- To address the challenges faced by elderly parents and ensure they receive the care
they need, families need to gain a clear understanding of their parents’ situations.
This includes communicating openly with the elderly parents about their caregiving
responsibilities, lack of maintenance and proper nutrition, financial difficulties, and
emotional distress. By having these conversations, families can better comprehend
the specific needs and challenges of their elderly parents, leading to improved and
more personalized care for them.
D. Helping Plans

- Communicating openly with their children and family about their situation and
feelings so that they can stay informed about the well-being of their elderly parents.

- Discussing the Senior Citizen's Benefits of the Philippines for the year 2024

- Access to healthcare and medication for their maintenance

- Recreational activities for leisure time can further support and enhance the well-
being of elderly parents.

C. Group Information

The formation of this group was initiated following the submission of a formal letter
to the barangay captain, seeking approval and support. Once approved, we began
coordinating with the Barangay Health Worker (BHW) to obtain a comprehensive list of the
Widowed Senior Citizens residing within the barangay. Subsequently, the agency workers
approached the existing informally organized group, expressing their interest in providing
various services and assistance. As a result of this collaboration, the group was officially
formed. It has been unanimously determined that the appropriate location for the session
will be the officially designated barangay hall. The scheduled sessions are set to commence
from December 20 to January 31, with exceptions for non-consecutive days, at precisely
8:30 9:30 a.m. and 1:00-2:00 p.m. The sessions will span one week. In adherence to its
designated name, the group is officially identified as the Widowed Senior Citizens,
specifically comprising widowed senior women of the community. The age range of the
members’ demographic falls between 60 and 85 years old.The members of the Widowed
Senior Citizens group hail from various puroks within the Barangay Katipunan, specifically
from Puroks 1, 2, and 3. Situated in the prominent highway areas of Poblacion, Guipos in the
province of Zamboanga del Sur, the barangay serves as their residential community. It is
important to note that a significant numer of the participants, who are widowed senior
citizens, continue to shoulder responsibilities such as caring for a child with an illness or
attending to the needs of their grandchildren. Furthermore, it has been observed that a
considerable portion of this demographic has been diagnosed with elevated blood pressure,
a medical condition commonly known as hypertension and also suffering from arthritis. A
notable observation regarding the majority of the widowed senior citizens within the group
is their ongoing struggle with economic hardships. This predicament arises from their
inconsistency in receiving financial support from their children. The primary source of
income for the head of the family, as identified through assessment, is derived from farming
activities, specifically the cultivation of crops such as rice and corn. Some of the heads of
their families are payong-payong drivers, and some of their children focus on their own
families. However, it is evident that the agricultural endeavors of their children alone are
insufficient to fulfill the basic needs of their families, even the Payong-Payong driver. To
supplement their income (the identified widowed senior citizens), some members have
resorted to engaging in additional income-generating activities such as crafting rugs, food
vending, and offering various services within their local community. The Philippines has an
increasingly aging population, thereby increasing the demand for healthcare and support
from families. Research has consistently indicated that within Filipino culture, the family
assumes the primary role of providing care for elderly parents or adults, guided by the
principles of filial piety and displaying respectful behavior towards older individuals.
However, regrettably, not all family members are capable of adequately meeting the basic
needs of their elderly parents, including the responsibility of caring for their grandchildren,
which ultimately falls upon the parents themselves. This predicament is particularly
prevalent among the majority of the group members, who are senior citizens. These
widowed senior citizens prioritize their health as their top concern. They worry about how
their grandchildren will care for them if their health declines. Financial stability is also a
significant priority, especially as they may not always receive the support they need from
their children, who have their own families to care for. These individuals are grappling with
health challenges, financial impacts, and the increasing responsibilities that come with
aging.

C. The group’s Concern/Problem to be Worked

The primary concern is the burden faced by widowed senior citizens due to inadequate
financial support, health challenges, and the responsibility of caring for their grandchildren.
This burden is exacerbated by the lack of family planning among the adult children of the
elderly parents, resulting in added responsibilities being passed on to the elderly.

C. Group Goals

- To address the situation experienced by the widowed senior citizens within their
families.
- Providing support systems focused on financial assistance, health care, and
resources.

D. Helping Plans. Action Plans

- Connecting Them to Barangay Health Workers: Widowed senior citizens will be

connected with Barangay Health Workers for monthly check-ups at their
Barangay Health Center. These check-ups will be conducted by nurses assigned
to the Rural Health Unit. Widowed senior citizens experiencing health issues will
receive free medicines.
- Accessing Multivitamins and Medications through MSWDO: After the check-up,
widowed senior citizens can visit the Municipal Social Welfare and Development
Office (MSWDO) to obtain multivitamins and additional medications based on
their check-up results.
- Implement regular family meetings to facilitate open communication. Encourage
sharing of experiences and concerns to deepen understanding of the challenges
faced by widowed senior citizens. This fosters empathy and strengthens familial
bonds, empowering families to provide vital support and care.

E. Content of Session

Session I. “Group Meeting/Orientation”

The session will commence with an opening prayer led by Mylinda Carino. The
groups will introduce themselves, and vice versa. Getting to know one another is usually
how a group integrates. It is intended to introduce the participants to one another and
provide an avenue for group interaction, helping to gain self-confidence in integrating with
other group members. Individuals are expected to cite their names starting with “ako si”
and will answer the questions given by the worker: “What are the usual problems they have
encountered as widowed senior citizens?” Additionally, the worker will discuss the agenda,
benefits, and the importance of the activities.

Subsequently, the worker conducted individual interviews with the participants. The
interview aimed to gather personal information, details about their families, current
situations, and challenges they face. This process allows the worker to assess their problems
and obtain individualized information from each participant.

Session II. Ask Me- "Family's Resilience: Overcoming Adversity"

The event commenced with an opening prayer led by Mrs. Nenita Tejada,
followed by multimedia presentations. The program kicked off with a warm-up activity: a
"dance for the elderly." Participants enthusiastically engaged in the cha-cha, a beloved
dance among older individuals, promoting exercise and establishing a beneficial routine.
Following the dance, we proceeded with our main activity, "Ask Me!" In this activity,
workers designated participants and tasked them with preparing three questions for their
assigned participants. One sample question was: "Kumusta man ang kinabuhi isip usa ka
balo nga Senior Citizen unsaman ang pipila ka pinakadako nga mga hinanaling o mga kalisod
imong naagian isip usa ka balo nga senior, ug unsa man ang imong gibuhat aron
malampusan kini?" (How is life as a widowed Senior Citizen? What were some of the biggest
challenges or difficulties you faced as a senior widow, and what did you do to overcome
them?) Participants then shared their responses.

Session III “Draw Who You are”

After the "Ask Me" activity, there was a 15-minute break for relaxation and
preparation for the next activity, "Draw Who You Are." The worker facilitated this activity,
where participants were encouraged to depict through drawings various living and non-
living elements that symbolized their strengths as resilient widowed senior citizens.
Following the completion of their drawings, participants explained them in front of the
group, elaborating on their choices and connecting them to personal stories and current
situations. This activity served as a platform for creative expression and meaningful
storytelling, fostering a deeper understanding of each participant within the group dynamic.

Session IV “Home Visitation”

In the 3rd session, the worker conducts home visits to the individual homes of the
participants. The worker coordinates with the Barangay Health Worker to assist in locating
the houses of the participants. Upon reaching the location, the worker seeks permission to
enter the house of each participant.

Subsequently, the worker engages in discussions with the families regarding the
current situation of their elderly mother. During these conversations, the worker assesses
the living conditions and checks if they are comfortable in their living environment.
Additionally, the worker observes the household setup, including the number of members in
one house.

Seeking further documentation, the worker asks for permission from the participants
to take pictures as proof. This documentation is essential for record-keeping and serves as a
valuable reference for assessing the overall living conditions and needs of the participants.

Session V “Demonstration of Making Rugs”

In the 4th session, the focus is on rug-making. One of the participants, who is
knowledgeable about the process, takes the lead in demonstrating the rug-making
techniques to her co-participants. The group is divided into three teams, where they
collaborate and assist one another to create rugs. The produced rugs will be purchased by
social work interns, and the funds generated will be given to the participants.

This activity serves not only as a skill enhancement opportunity but also as a means
to boost their self-esteem. Through engaging in productive work and contributing to the
creation of sellable items, the participants gain a sense of accomplishment, fostering a
positive self-image.

Session VI “Check-up and Giving of Multivitamins and Medicines”

In the 5th session, the worker collaborates, with the Municipal Social Welfare and
Development Office (MSWDO) to acquire multivitamins and medications for the widowed
senior citizens. Additionally, the worker coordinates with the assigned nurse of Barangay
Katipunan to conduct check-ups on the widowed senior citizens, as many of them are
dealing with high blood pressure and arthritis. Following the check-up, the nurse will
distribute prescribed multivitamins and medicines.

This holistic approach not only addresses their immediate health needs but also
emphasizes preventive care. The collaboration aims to ensure the overall well-being of the
widowed senior citizens, focusing on both their current health conditions and long-term
health maintenance. Regular check-ups and appropriate medication contribute to their
health stability and improved quality of life.

Session VII “Discussing of Benefits to the Widowed Senior Citizens”

The workers invited the OSCA Head as a Guest Speaker to discuss the Benefits of the
Philippines for the year 2024 with the Widowed Senior Citizens. The OSCA Head also
delivered an inspirational message to the participants, emphasizing the importance of
staying informed about available benefits and encouraging them to actively participate in
programs that can enhance their well-being. The session provided an opportunity for the
widowed senior citizens to gain valuable insights into the support systems available to them
in the current year.

Session VIII “Culmination and Giving of Vitamins”

The final session, termed the "Culmination," marks the conclusion of the program
conducted by the workers. This event serves as a celebration of achievements and
community spirit. Participants will be formally recognized for their active involvement,
receiving certificates as a testament to their commitment. Additionally, groceries will be
distributed to address immediate needs, further emphasizing the practical support
extended to the widowed senior citizens. Multivitamins and losartan will also be provided
for seniors suffering from high blood pressure.

During the event, an inspirational message will be delivered, aiming to leave everyone
feeling motivated and positive. This moment is not only an opportunity to acknowledge
individual accomplishments but also to express gratitude to all the widowed senior citizens
for their active participation and unwavering support throughout the program. Overall, the
Culmination seeks to provide a cohesive and uplifting experience, fostering a sense of
community and recognizing the collective efforts that have contributed to the success of the
program.

F. Plans for Next Session

Session I

The upcoming session will commence with an icebreaker to enhance group

integration. Following a brief review of the previous session, participants will engage in a
sharing session, discussing common challenges faced by widowed senior citizens. An
interactive workshop will focus on identifying personal strengths and coping strategies. This
will be followed by an activity about portraying their strength as strong widowed citizens
where they share stories and explain their drawings.

Session II

In the upcoming session, we will begin with a reflective moment, acknowledging the
strengths demonstrated in the previous session. Participants will engage in a group
discussion about the "dance for the elderly" activity, sharing their experiences and
reflections. An interactive storytelling workshop will follow, encouraging participants to
connect personal anecdotes to their drawings. The next sessions will be home visitation to
the individual respective households of the participants.

Session III

In the upcoming session, the worker will be building on the home visits and addressing the
identified needs of the participants. This will involve collaborating with the Barangay Health
Worker to provide health-related support, sharing relevant resources to improve living
conditions, and initiating a discussion about tailored assistance programs. The plan is to
conduct rug-making sessions in the next few sessions, as the participants have expressed
interest in learning this skill and potentially using it as a source of income.

Session IV

Following the successful rug-making session, the next session will include a reflective
component. Participants will engage in a group discussion about their experiences during
the rug-making activity, sharing insights and discussing the impact on their self-esteem. The
session will then move on to a goal-setting exercise, where participants can express personal
aspirations and identify areas for further skill development. The plans for the next session
include a health check-up for the widowed senior citizens to monitor any health issues they
may be experiencing and to receive free multivitamins and medicines.

Session V

The worker is working together with the Municipal Social Welfare and Development
Office (MSWDO) to provide multivitamins and medications for widowed senior citizens. It is
essential to ensure that senior citizens receive regular check-ups and prescribed
medications to properly manage their health conditions, such as high blood pressure and
arthritis. The coordination with the assigned nurse of Barangay Katipunan to conduct check-
ups and distribute prescribed multivitamins and medicines is a valuable initiative toward
promoting the health and well-being of senior citizens. The next planning session will discuss
the benefits for senior citizens for the year 2024.

Session VI

After the 7th session about money planning, the next sessions (8-10) will teach
practical skills, like budgeting, understanding investments, and finding ways to make money.
Local experts might share their experiences, and there will be a session on finding financial
help in the community. The program will end with a "Finale and Recognition" session, where
participants will get certificates to celebrate what they've learned. They will also receive
groceries for help right away. This last session aims to finish the program on a good note,
recognizing the hard work of widowed senior citizens.

Session VII

After the Culmination session, the next steps involve soliciting feedback from
participants to evaluate the program's effectiveness. Conducting a brief survey or holding a
feedback session can provide valuable insights into what worked well and areas for
improvement. Additionally, consider organizing a follow-up session or creating a support
network for ongoing community engagement, allowing participants to stay connected and
continue learning from one another. This post-program phase aims to ensure sustained
positive impacts and foster a sense of ongoing community support among the widowed
senior citizens.

B. Problem to be Worked

Based on the assessment, the groups share a common major problem, as many families
experience poverty due to inadequate income. A prevalent issue is the unemployment or
joblessness of family heads, leaving elderly mothers to shoulder additional burdens and
responsibilities while caring for their children. Furthermore, a significant health concern
among these widowed senior citizens is the prevalence of high blood pressure and arthritis.
Access to an adequate supply of multivitamins and medicines to address these illnesses is
insufficient. This highlights the urgent need for comprehensive support to address both
economic challenges and health issues within these communities.

C. Goal Achievement

The overarching goal is to substantially enhance the economic well-being and health
outcomes of the widowed senior citizens and their families in the assessed communities.
This involves boosting family income through skills training, job placement, and the creation
of sustainable livelihood opportunities, along with the establishment of community-based
initiatives. Concurrently, the initiative aims to improve health by ensuring regular check-ups,
medical consultations, and a reliable supply of multivitamins and essential medicines for
managing high blood pressure and arthritis. Additionally, fostering a supportive community
network, encouraging active involvement in community projects, and providing educational
workshops on financial literacy and health awareness are integral components. The ultimate
objective is to create a holistic and sustainable support system that transcends the
intervention program, ensuring lasting positive impacts on the overall well-being of the
widowed senior citizens and their communities.

D. Other Goals related work Undertaken

Changes beneficial to the client may include increased family understanding and
support, improved economic stability through family members' skill development, enhanced
health knowledge leading to better management of health conditions, and a strengthened
sense of community support. Specific positive outcomes can be measured through
assessments of family dynamics, economic indicators, and the overall well-being of the
widowed senior citizens and their families.
E. Recommendation/ Plans for Follow-up

In establishing a comprehensive follow-up plan, it is recommended to conduct

regular check-ins for ongoing monitoring of the economic well-being and health status of
widowed senior citizens and their families. Continuous skill development programs should
be implemented to enhance family members' employability, adapting to evolving economic
opportunities through periodic workshops or training sessions. To ensure sustained health
support, ongoing access to health education, regular check-ups, and the provision of
multivitamins and essential medicines for managing high blood pressure and arthritis is
crucial. Sustaining community engagement initiatives will strengthen shared responsibility
and community bonding, encouraging active participation in ongoing projects. Advocacy
efforts for social welfare policies should persist, staying informed about policy changes and
ensuring families have continued access to available support. The establishment and
maintenance of peer support networks and educational partnerships contribute to ongoing
emotional support and learning opportunities. Additionally, sustaining environmental
sustainability initiatives within the community promotes eco-friendly practices and potential
income-generating activities tied to environmental conservation. This follow-up plan aims to
ensure the long-term success of the intervention program, addressing immediate needs and
fostering sustained positive changes in the lives of widowed senior citizens and their
families.
