Discussion Assignment 4: Managing Volunteers

Answer 1

Volunteers play a crucial role in enabling the organization to reach its goals and

objectives. Therefore, the volunteer program must appeal to the staff to maximize their

strengths. Motivating volunteers enhance job satisfaction and organizational commitment. In

this case, Webster should offer incentives such as gifts and public recognition to encourage

Alice and Lucy. Career development opportunities will help the two volunteers expand their

knowledge and gain networking opportunities to make their job more appealing. The

manager should also provide recommendation letters to make Alice and Lucy feel they have a

significant role in the animal shelter and the community. Bonuses can provide supporting

income, especially for Lucy, a full-time mother without a job. Although many volunteers do

not priories the benefits, offering them can motivate them to continue being committed to

society’s goals.

Answer 2

Volunteer management goes beyond recruitment and encompasses various activities

such as supporting, organizing, and overseeing. The director should make efforts to convince

the two volunteers to stay and offer better working conditions since it will help the

organization retain the skills, reduce replacement costs and enhance its capacity to achieve

the goals. Webster should create a friendly atmosphere where volunteers can express their

feeling and issues that affect them. The strategy will improve problem-solving abilities

among workers and eliminate unnecessary conflicts and turnover intentions. The director has

not clearly outlined the responsibilities of Alice and Lucy, which is the leading cause of their

disputes. Webster should set clear expectations for both volunteers to understand their roles,

where they can access assistance, and their working schedules. The step will prevent

complaints about working hours and duty allocation. The director should conduct regular

supervision to note performance gaps and provide the necessary guidance. Proper volunteer

management will ensure a smooth flow of operations and improve the performance of the

animal shelter.
