Lesson/Topic:
Relevance of ideas

Reference/Source: www.owl.puredue.edu | www.esl.fis.edu

Grade 9 Learning Module Page No.: 106-108

Objectives/Subtasks:
Distinguish between relevant and irrelevant ideas.

Activity No: 1 Title: Relevant and Irrelevant Ideas Day: 1

Key Concept:

Relevant Ideas
 Directly related, connected, or pertinent to a topic.
 Important to the matter at hand.
 It is a degree to which something is related, significant, correct and appropriate.
 A thing might be relevant, a document or a piece of information may be relevant. The basic
understanding of relevance does not depend on whether we speak of “ideas” or “information”.

Irrelevant Ideas
 Idea that is not needed.
 Detail that is unrelated, unconnected, insignificant and does not support or has nothing to do with the
information presented.

Example:

“I promise I will leave this amusement

“I’ve heard that
park story after this week but for this
story too many
week we’re going to go back to it
times.”
again.”

Jane Hannah

If Hannah is telling her story about her first trip to an amusement park, she’s not going to tell to her friend
about her dog, she’s also not going to tell about family members who aren’t with her because those family
members don’t have a part in her story. She’s not going to tell her friend about what shoe size she wears.
She’s only going to tell to her friend things that are important for her to know about her trip to the amusement
park, things that’s related or connected to the events that took place in her trip to the amusement park.

How to identify if the idea is relevant?

Activity 1:
Direction/s: Identify if the underlined sentence in a paragraph is related and connected to other ideas or sentences in
the paragraph. Write relevant if it is connected or irrelevant if the underlined sentence is not connected on the space
provided before each number.

Example: The longest-lived creature in the insect world is the queen termite (ant). She has been known to live for over
50 years. During that time, the queen can lay over 30,000 eggs each day. So in her 50 years of life, it is possible for
her to give birth to half a billion children. Some termite hills can be over six meters high.

Answer: Irrelevant because the topic is about mother termite.

________________1. For many years, all books were written by hand. Because it took so long to write one book,
there were only a few of them. Most people could never own a book. Then sometime between 1450 and 1460,
Johannes Gutenberg got the idea of carving separate letters and moving them to make new words. This was the
invention of moveable type. From then on, the numbers of books printed grew quickly.

________________2. The solar system is believed to have formed, perhaps 5 billion years ago, from a spinning cloud
of gas called a nebula. As this nebula contracted it began to spin faster and faster. Probably it spun off rings of
planetary matter as it became more disk-like. These rings later contracted into planets.

________________3. Some people do not know that the whale is a mammal just like a human. Humpback whales will
sometimes leap clear up out of the water, an act known as breaching. A humpback whale can weigh thirty tons and
measure 15 meters in length. So it takes an enormous amount of energy for a whale to breach.

________________4. The largest organ in the human body is the skin. One of the skin's functions is to help regulate
the amount of body heat that flows in and out of the body. When it is cold, we cover the skin with extra layers of
clothing to slow down the outward flow of heat. When it is hot, evaporation of sweat cools us down.

________________5. The largest set of wings on any bird, more than three meters across, is found on the albatross.
They are so heavy that it is difficult for the albatross to flap them in order to take off and fly. Albatross often nest on
steep cliffs so that they can simply fall off into the air. Once they are airborne, they soar gracefully.

________________6. Lake Baikal in central Asia is the deepest lake in the world. In places, it is 1.5 kilometers deep.
The lake contains about one sixth of the world's fresh water supply. It contains over 1200 species of animals and 500
species of plants. Many of these plants and animals are not to be found anywhere else on earth.

________________7. Ice floats on water because it is not quite as dense as water is. The chemical formula for water is
H20. If ice were denser than water, then lakes and other bodies of water would freeze from the bottom up during the
winter. Fish would surface and eventually die.

Lesson/Topic:
Worth of Ideas
Reference/Source: www.study.com &Page No.: ____________

Objectives/Subtasks:
Determine the worth of ideas.

Activity No: 2 Title: Justify the Worth of Ideas Day: 2

Key Concept:

The idea is WORTHY if it is good or important enough to justify and if it has value.

Things to consider in identifying worthy ideas

(1) Validity
 based on sensible reasoning
 important or serious enough to make it worth saying or doing.
 can be used and accepted by people in authority.

(2) Processes taken to get great idea.

Not all ideas are the same. Let’s take Einstein’s theory of special relativity. This is an idea that made
Einstein a celebrity, he was given the status of “genius”. Does he deserve all that praise, after all it is only an idea,
right?

Well, the starting point for the theory was that the speed of light is the same for every moving object.
This was a strange idea since people expect that if we travel towards the sun, the light will come faster towards
us, just like ball would if it was thrown from the sun. And we would expect the speed of light to be lower if we
moved away from the sun, just like we can run away from a ball that is thrown towards us.

You might therefore want to say that the unintuitive idea that the speed of light is always the same was
the real genius, since the theory of special relativity is based on (derived from) that idea. But Einstein wasn’t the
only physicist who had that idea, in fact it was a generally accepted idea for most physicists at the time.

What Einstein did that was unique, was that he didn’t stop there, but instead explored how this idea
related to other ideas, and what consequences could be expected in different situations if that idea was true. So
after having spent a lot of time on this he finally arrived at the special theory of relativity, and it was this effort
that was the true genius.

A short summary:
It is convenient to think of all ideas as hypotheses. Naturally, they are worth nothing until you have tested them,
and they give good results.

Direction/s: Read the video transcript of Former America’s President Barack Obama. Find out the issue he has
presented in his message to the American people.

Obama: ‘There Were No Winners In This’ Government Shutdown

President Barack Obama’s Address to the Americans
http://www.huffingtonpost.com

Hi everybody. this week, because Democrats and responsible republicans

came together, the government was reopened, and the threat of default was
removed from our economy.
There’s been a lot of discussion lately of the politics of this shutdown. But the
truth is, there were no winners in this. At a time when our economy needs
more growth and more jobs, the manufactured crises of these last few weeks actually harmed jobs and growth.
And it’s understandable that your frustration with what goes on in Washington has never been higher.

3
The way business is done in Washington has to change. now that these clouds of crisis and
uncertainty have lifted, we need to focus on what the majority of Americans sent us here to do – grow the
economy, create good jobs, strengthen the middle class, lay the foundation for broad-based prosperity, and get
our fiscal house in order for the long haul.
It won’t be easy. But we can make progress. specifically, there are three places where I believe that
Democrats and republicans can work together right away.
First, we should sit down and pursue a balanced approach to a responsible budget, one that grows our
economy faster and shrinks our long-term deficits further. there is no choice between growth and fiscal
responsibility – we need both. so we’re making a serious mistake if a budget doesn’t focus on what you’re
focused on: creating more good jobs that pay better wages. if we’re going to free up resources for the things
that help us grow – education, infrastructure, research – we should cut what we don’t need, and close
corporate tax loopholes that don’t help create jobs. this shouldn’t be as difficult as it has been in past years.
remember, our deficits are shrinking – not growing.
Second, we should finish the job of fixing our broken immigration system. there’s already a broad
coalition across America that’s behind this effort, from business leaders to faith leaders to law enforcement. it
would grow our economy. it would secure our borders. the senate has already passed a bill with strong
bipartisan support. now the House should, too. the majority of Americans thinks this is the right thing to do. it
can and should get done by the end of this year.
Third, we should pass a farm bill – one that America’s farmers and ranchers can depend on, one that
protects vulnerable children and adults in times of need, and one that gives rural communities opportunities to
grow and the longer-term certainty they deserve. We won’t suddenly agree on everything now that the cloud
of crisis has passed. But we shouldn’t hold back on places where we do agree, just because we don’t think it’s
good politics, or just because the extremes in our parties don’t like compromise. i’ll look for willing partners
from either party to get important work done. there’s no good reason why we can’t govern responsibly,
without lurching from manufactured crisis to manufactured crisis. Because that isn’t governing – it’s just
hurting the people we were sent here to serve.
Those of us who have the privilege to serve this country have an obligation to do our job the best we
can. We come from different parties, but we’re Americans first. And our obligations to you must compel all of
us, Democrats and republicans, to cooperate, and compromise, and act in the best interests of this country we
love. thanks everybody, and have a great weekend.

Activity No: 3 Title: Provide Relevant and Worthy Ideas Day: 3 and 4
Key Concept:

Kindness is something we all know to be important, but we tend to forget it somewhere along the way. Until
one day, when we feel as though things can’t get much worse, we bump into someone else and for no reason
whatsoever they touch us with kindness. Tat small touch ignites the feeling hidden deep within us once again and we
begin to feel something we haven’t felt in a long time and it feels so good. If we’re lucky we take a moment to notice
these precious moments and allow those moments peel off a layer of cynicism, allowing some light to enter. Perhaps,
the next steps we venture will be with a new perspective, one that makes us more aware of those around us, one that
makes us even for a fleeting moment to believe once again in the good of others, to trust.

The Kindness Boomerang was my attempt to remind the child within each of us, the innocence we once had, to
remember that change is possible – to remember that kindness is possible and within our very reach. Open your eyes,
become aware of your surroundings and you will be surprised by the amazing opportunities that lay before you. Your
act may propel others to follow because kindness, like the domino effect has the power to spread rapidly. Who knows
perhaps the kindness you perform today will magically find its way back. So, put your heart out there and touch the
life of another with kindness.
