REGION 1: ILOCOS REGION

 It is located in the northwestern part of Luzon Island. It is composed of four provinces: Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur,
La Union, and Pangasinan.

ILOCOS NORTE:
 Northernmost province of the region. Its capital is Laoag City. Tourist attractions include the Paoay Church, Cape
Bojeador Lighthouse, Patipat Viaduct, Bangui Windmills, Malacañang of the North and many other more.

PAOAY CHURCH
-also known as the Saint Augustine Church
-one of the baroque churches in the Philippines
-one of the oldest churches in the country
-In 1993, it was branded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the "Baroque Churches of the
Philippines" collection.

Historical Background: Construction of Paoay Church began in 1694 under the supervision of Augustinian
friars and was completed in 1710. It was built by Filipino and Chinese craftsmen.

Architecture: Famous for its blends of architectural style: Baroque, Gothic, Javanese, and Chinese. It has 24
big supports called buttresses to keep it strong during earthquakes. The main materials used in the
construction of it are rubble, bricks, and lumber.

Religious Importance: This monument is now used as a Roman Catholic church.

Tourist Attraction: A popular tourist destination, inviting visitors who come to admire its architectural
beauty and learn about its history and cultural significance.

ILOCOS SUR:
 Second northernmost province of Region I.
 Its capital is Vigan City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A. CALLE CRISOLOGO
-designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 as part of the "Historic Town of Vigan"
-its named after the Ilocano poet, writer, and playwright Governor Marcelino “Mena” Crisologo

Historical Background: Established during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines,
particularly in the late 18th century.

Architecture: Its architectural style is a blend of Filipino, Chinese, and Spanish influences. A five-
hundred-meter cobblestone street that highlights a 15th to 16 th century old Spanish architectural
house with ancient cobblestone. Consists of about 200 beautifully restored houses dating back to the
16th century. Many Spanish horse-drawn carriages, or “kalesa” in Tagalog word can be found on this
street.

Tourist Attraction: Most well-known tourist spot in Vigan,City. Few of the ancestral houses have
become restaurants and others have been converted into inns and souvenir shops.
*The ground floor is made up of solid blocks of rocks while the second floor is consists of woods and other
materials. Roofs are made up of irons, and windows are made up of capiz shells.

LA UNION
 Spaniards created the tower as a lookout point for the approaching attacks of Japanese, Chinese and Moro pirates
and other conquerors in the coastal towns of La Union.
 Served as a communication tower during world war II
 Considered a national treasure by the National Historical Institute

Historical Background: 400-year-old watchtower facing the West Philippine Sea built during the
pre-spanish period.

Architecture: A cylindrical 5.6-meter high, made of reddish bricks, structure. It is made of adobe,
bricks and coral blocks held together by lime and white eggs. A storm in 1996 splitted the tower
vertically from the middle. The restored Baluarte of today is a fusion of the old and new—half of the
original adobe structure, which is darker, is wedded to a new section made of lighter red bricks.

Tourist Attraction: Popular tourist destination up to this time.
