Comments from Examiner Trainer – Comments to be provided on each Candidate

Candidate 1

Task One

You’re right for TA but you’re marking high for the other bandings. For TA the response does cover the
requirements of the task but there is no overview and information is listed mechanically, so band 5 is the
best fit. For CC, the subject of the sentence is repeated as a noun each time. This means there is difficulty
in identifying referencing, making it band 3 here. LR should be band 4 as the vocabulary is limited and
repetitive, with most of it taken from the question. GRA is band 4 as subordinate clauses are rare and
simple sentences predominate.

Task Two.

You’re right for all bandings here, well done. Good to bracket the lifted rubric. This response is
significantly underlength. You’ve correctly calculated the penalty at minus 3. The pre-penalty band for TR is
band 3 as no part of the prompt is adequately addressed, due to the shortness of the candidate’s response.
This means TR should be band 1. You’re right to give band 2 for the other criteria as the response is so
underlength.

Candidate 2

Task One

This script is underlength at 146 words. You should tick the underlength box, write the number of words but
put zero in the box for the penalty. For TA, stating the number of steps in a process is not enough to count
as an overview, meaning the candidate gets band 5 here. For CC, cohesive devices are used to some good
effect but there needs to be more evidence of effective referencing and substitution for band 7. For LR,
there is no evidence of the less common language needed for band 7. GRA should also be band 6 because
there is some use of complex sentences but error free sentences are not frequent (a feature of band 7).

Task 2.

You’re right for all bandings except GRA. You’re right to give band 6 for TR as the second part of the
prompt would need to be more fully covered for band 7. The candidate is able to get band 7 for CC as each
paragraph has a clear central topic and there is enough range of discourse markers. The candidate just
gets band 7 for LR as there is some correctly-used less common language such as [a social issue/sounds
very plausible/livelihood/estimated] GRA is a bit tricky but the candidate doesn’t quite make band 7 here.
There is a range of structures but error free sentences are not frequent.

Candidate 3.

Task One

You’re right for TA and GRA. TA is band 5 as there is no overview. GRA is band 5 as there are few attempts
at complex structures. CC should also be band 5 because, although the relationship of ideas can be
followed, cohesive devices are used repetitively [if/when] and there is inadequate referencing and
substitution. LR is also band 5 as the range is too repetitive and limited for band 6.

Task Two.

Good to spot the underlength script here but you’re marking too high. For TA, the prompt has been
misunderstood and no part of the prompt is addressed. This makes a pre-penalty band band 3, which
becomes band 3 with the penalty. For CC, the range of cohesive is too limited for band 6. LR is band 5 due
to the frequency of errors in word formation and spelling e.g.
[oppinion/beleive/courtry/lagre/gorgous/dometic/encourged]. For GRA, the frequency of errors makes band
5 a better fit.
It’s good to see that you are marking to standard for some of the bandings but there is a tendency to mark
too high. Because you are non-standard A you will need to be monitored again within 3 months.
