Objectives of the lab

• The lab is the practice course of Concept of Engineering Design (DES101T) and thus the
concepts which are dealt in the theory will be realized through simple designs and
models.
• The lab course will be help the students to realize that ‘Design and Conceptualization’ as a
mathematical, scientific and a systematic problem-solving methodology.

Important: In some of the experiments, the product that is to be designed / modified/

analyzed/ realized etc will be revealed only during the lab session

Exercise 1 : Realization through Pencil Sketches
Aim: The aim of the exercise are as follows

• to emphasize the use and importance of pencil sketches in realization of design

• to make understand the role of sketching, either as a tool or skill, in the design
process.
• to convey that sketching is used in the design process within multiple design
disciplines

Tools and techniques: Pencils and colors. The students can use either isometric, single or two-point
perspective sketching techniques.

Procedure: The team will be given two small products, which are used in our day to day life. The
students will reproduce them the product through design sketches.

Uses for Sketching in Design

• To aid in rapid concept development:

• It gives a basic composition, layout or architecture of the design
• A quick and easy way to communicate
• To help in visual exploration

Exercise 2 : Realization through Models
Aim: The aim of the exercise are as follows
• to emphasize the use and importance of model making in realization of design
• to make understand the role of models in the design process.

Tools and materials:

• Simple wood makers tools, cutters, shears, foam cutters, emery sheets of different
grades, drilling machine, file sets
• Plastic, acrylic, thermocol , sheet metals bonds

Procedure: Each batch must do a plastic/acrylic, thermocol and a sheet metal model from the
following:

Sheet metal (choose any one): (Important : Take photo graphs at every stage)

Plastic material (Choose any one)

Book Shelves : (Important : Take photo graphs at every stage)

Exercise 3 : Need analysis
Aim: The aim of the experiment to analyze the need of customer for a known simple product (It
will be revealed during lab session). Based on the highest importance customer needs re-
conceptualize the design. (You may choose any one product that is displayed on the table and
perform the analysis and any two methods to analyze the customer need)

Note: Do not realize the product – Only identify the major customer need. In the next experiment
the need will be postmortem to come up with new concepts and realize the same.

Procedure

• Assume that the TA’s are your customers. Use the template to collect the customer views
and interpret the needs.
• Choose any two among the following to collect the customer views and their importance
with respect to design modification
o Articulated Query Method
o Semantic Enquiry
o Like and Dislike method
• Sort out the different types of need
• Construct the Pareto chart to find the need of highest importance

Semantic Enquiry

S.N Parameter for Customer Survey Relative Importance

1 Parameter / Question 1 2 3 4 5
2 Parameter / Question 1 2 3 4 5
3 Parameter / Question 1 2 3 4 5
4 Parameter / Question 1 2 3 4 5
5 Parameter / Question 1 2 3 4 5
6 Parameter / Question 1 2 3 4 5
7 Parameter / Question 1 2 3 4 5
8 Parameter / Question 1 2 3 4 5
9 Parameter / Question 1 2 3 4 5
10 Parameter / Question 1 2 3 4 5

Design of Questions: Points to be remembered

• Do not use jargon or sophisticated vocabulary.

• Focus very precisely. Every question should focus directly on one specific topic /
part.

6 Design realization laboratory Dr.B.Raja, IIITD&M

Kancheepuram
• Use simple sentences. Two or more simple sentences are preferable to one
compound sentence.
• Do not lead the customer toward the answer you want
• Avoid questions with double negatives because they may create
misunderstanding.
• In any list of options given to the respondents, include the choice of “Other” with a
space for a write-in answer.
• Always include one open-ended question. Open-ended questions can reveal
insights and nuances and tell you things you would never think to ask.
• The number of questions should be such that they can be answered in about 15
(but no more than 30) minutes.
• Design the survey form so that tabulating and analyzing data will be easy.
• Be sure to include instructions for completing and returning it.

Outcome

• Prepare the Pareto chart and find the needs with highest importance

Exercise 4 : Concept selection
Aim: The aim of the experiment is to use a Pugh chart comparison matrix in order chooses a best
table and a table lamp shown in the figure. Realize one best design using a plastic model. Use
parameters such as commercial importance, aesthetics, easy to manufacture, cost etc to
benchmark.

Tools
1. Comparison matrix
2. Simple cutting tools to working with sheet metals.
3. Assume the relative dimension of the model logically and the model should not exceed 200

2. Construct the morphological chart to evolve new designs with the emphasis on the
following aspects
• List out as many as possible parameter and method that are important to
define the product. Simultaneously, evolve different options based on common
sense.
• You may also choose the individual components /material that constitute the
product to evolve options
• Fill up this option matrix to evolve concepts

• Use Pugh chart to quantify the concepts logically with points. Please use
++,+,0,-,-- rating for the various design criteria
• Use appropriate weighting factors to complete the score card and grant score
by different concepts.

Outcome:
List out the three concepts with sketches and specification and realize the best design.
