ANNEXURE II
MICRO-PROJECT REPORT
Sound Frequency Meter
1.0 Rationale
The idea behind creating a sound frequency using Arduino lies is to
create a device that can accurately measure the frequency of
sound waves in the surrounding environment. This can have
various applications, such as:

1. Audio Engineering: Professionals in audio engineering may use

frequency meters to analyse and optimize sound systems, ensuring that
audio equipment reproduces sound accurately across different
frequencies..
2. Music Production: Musicians and producers can use frequency meters to
tune instruments, adjust equalization settings, and identify any unwanted
frequencies in recordings.
3. Environmental Monitoring: Sound frequency meters can be used in
environmental monitoring to measure noise pollution levels in urban areas,
industrial zones, or natural habitats.
4. Healthcare: In healthcare settings, frequency meters can assist in
diagnosing certain medical conditions related to hearing and speech, such
as tinnitus or hearing loss.

2.0 Aim/Benefits of the Micro-Project

The aim behind making the Sound frequency meter is to check the
frequency of sound in surrounding .To accurately measure sound
frequency, use a specialized tool like a sound frequency meter or a
sound level meter with frequency analysis capabilities. Ensure
proper calibration before positioning the meter near the sound
source.
3.0 Course Outcomes Achieved:
a) Understand basic principles of microcontroller programming.
b) Demonstrate proficiency in interfacing sensors with
microcontrollers.
c) Apply fundamental concepts of digital and analog electronics
in practical projects.
d) Develop skills in troubleshooting and debugging electronic
circuits and code.

4.0 Literature Review

Microcontroller Programming: Several resources provide comprehensive

guides on programming microcontrollers, including Arduino. Books like
"Arduino Programming in 24 Hours" by Richard Blum and "Programming
Arduino: Getting Started with Sketches" by Simon Monk offer step-by-step
tutorials for beginners to learn the basics of programming microcontrollers
using Arduino IDE.
Sensor Interfacing: "Getting Started with Sensors: Measure the World with
Electronics, Arduino, and Raspberry Pi" by Kimmo Karvinen and Tero
Karvinen is a valuable resource for understanding how to interface various
sensors with microcontrollers. It covers a wide range of sensors commonly
used in IoT projects, including light sensors, temperature sensors, and
motion sensors.
Digital and Analog Electronics: For understanding the fundamental
concepts of digital and analog electronics, textbooks like "Practical
Electronics for Inventors" by Paul Scherz and "The Art of Electronics" by
Paul Horowitz and Winfield Hill are highly recommended. These books
cover topics such as logic gates, operational amplifiers, and transistor
circuits, which are essential for designing electronic circuits.

1. Modules in our project:

Sound Sensor Module:

This module detects sound converts them into electrical signals that can be processed by the
microcontroller. The Sound Sensor Module is a versatile component commonly used in electronic
projects to detect surrounding sound or noise levels. It operates on the principle of capturing sound
waves using a small microphone or sound transducer, which then generates electrical signals
corresponding to the intensity of the detected sound. These modules often feature adjustable
sensitivity, allowing users to fine-tune the sensor's response to different sound levels through built-
in potentiometers or sensitivity adjustment screws. Output signals from the module can be either
analog or digital, providing continuous voltage or binary signals, respectively, and are compatible
with microcontrollers like Arduino. With operating voltages typically ranging from 3.3V to 5V,
these modules find applications in diverse fields such as clap switches, noise monitoring systems,
security alarms, and voice-controlled devices. Integration with Arduino is straightforward,
facilitated by available libraries and example codes, enabling rapid development of sound-
activated functionalities in various projects. Overall, the Sound Sensor Module serves as a valuable
tool for hobbyists, makers, and engineers seeking to incorporate sound detection capabilities into
their electronic designs.
Arduino Microcontroller:
The brain of the project, the Arduino board receives input from the sound sensor module,
processes it using programmed logic, and controls the output accordingly.
The Arduino module represents a cornerstone in the world of electronics, offering a versatile
microcontroller platform that empowers enthusiasts, students, educators, and professionals alike
to bring their ideas to life. At its heart lies a programmable microcontroller board, typically based
on AVR or ARM architectures, equipped with input/output pins, analog and digital interfaces, and
onboard components like LEDs and buttons. What sets Arduino apart is its open-source nature,
both in terms of hardware and software. This openness fosters a vibrant ecosystem of developers
and makers who freely share designs, code, and expertise, fueling innovation and collaboration.
Power Supply Module:

This module provides the necessary power to the Arduino board and other components of the
circuit. It can be a battery pack or an AC adapter depending on the specific requirements of the
project. The Power Supply Module serves as a crucial component within electronic systems,
providing stable electrical energy necessary for the proper functioning of the entire circuitry. Its
primary function revolves around voltage regulation, ensuring that the voltage supplied to the
electronic circuit remains consistent and within the required range, thus safeguarding sensitive
components against potential damage due to fluctuations. Compatible with a variety of input
voltages, ranging from batteries to AC mains or external power adapters, the module offers
flexibility in power source selection tailored to specific application needs.

Furthermore, the Power Supply Module delivers regulated output voltage suited to power the
electronic components effectively. It also boasts a defined maximum current capacity to meet the
power demands of the connected devices. Equipped with built-in protection features, including
safeguards against overvoltage, overcurrent, and short circuits, these modules ensure the integrity
of the circuitry and user safety.
