How to write a Technical

Report?
Prepared by:

Dr. Mohamed Helmy

Conclusion: (maybe include)
o Conclude:
It draws logical conclusions (inferences) from the body of report
(all it’s data) that has preceded.

o Summarize:
It reviews the key points, key facts and so on from what has
preceded.
o Generalize:
It moves away from the specific topic of the reports to a
general discuss of implications, applications but in general terms

2
Example for Conclusion:

Doing this technical report made me to:

- Remember my past and look through all the achievements

and learning from the failures .
- After all, I feel happy with all the things I've done, because
- I learned that nothing happens without the reason.
- I realized that I should be catching the right time to start
achieving my aims and this time will be now not tomorrow.
- Now I should put the most effort to my college studies,
summer training and engineering programs in additional to my
hobby.
- If I will find some gaps, I can fill them while studying.
- I need to considering my hard work as a game and fun.
- I will write my plan (for short and long term) every day in
note book and next day read it and try to accomplish.
3
Recommendations:
 It is to suggest the future action that is to be taken as a
result of the report.

 They are supported by the conclusions, and aimed towards

accomplishing the purpose of the report.

 It presented at last but they may be given first,

especially in recommendation reports (or given briefly in
the letter of transmittal, introduction or abstract).

4
Example for Recommendations:
As you read in my conclusion, I wrote about successful
engineer, I talked only about personal skills and I
recommend other students who will search in this topic to:
- Interpersonal skills (your team works and communication
skills)
- Leader ship skills.
- Learning skills.
- Writing and Presentation skills.
- Numeracy skills.

5
References or bibliography:
This includes all the sites, books, thesis and journals you
referred to.
It is written at the end, you write the name, date in case of
journal and thesis.

as:
• Harvard style
• Numeric style
• APA (American Psychological Association)

6
Harvard Style:

Family name, INITIAL(S). Year. Title. Edition (if not first

edition). Place of publication: Publisher.

Adams, A.D. 1906. Electric transmission of water power. New

York: McGraw.
Page Numbering:
• All pages in the report (within but excluding the front
and back covers).

• All pages throughout the document use Arabic numerals.

(1,2,3……)

• in the traditional design style, all pages before the

introduction use lowercase roman numerals. (I,II,III,IV..)

7
• Page numbers can be placed in one of the several
areas on the page. Usually the best and easiest
choice is to place page numbers at the bottom
center of the page.
Note that:
Longer reports often use the page numbering style
known as folio (by chapter or double enumeration) for
example, pages in chapter 2 would be numbered 2-1, 2-
2, 2-3 and so on. This style eases the process of adding
and deleting pages.

Supplementary parts:

1. Further work.
2. Appendix.
3. Biography.
4. Index.
5. Glossary.
6. Acknowledgment.
7. Dedication.

9
Further Work

It includes all the further work and

suggestions that be covered later in
the coming reports and they are not
included in yours.

10
Example for Further Work:

,2015.

-Tony Robbins, Money master the game, Simon and

Schuster,2016.

-Karen Blumenthal, Steve Jobs: The Man Who Thought

Different, Bloomsbury publishing, February 14, 2012

11

some relevance to the
report but cannot be easily
fitted into the text. It is
