Part 3. Read the following passage and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each of the
following questions. Write answers in YOUR ANSWER part.
This symptoms of hay fever include watery and itchy eyes and a runny, congested nose.
People suffering from hay fever may experience occasional wheezing and repeated bouts of
sneezing and may even lose their sense of smell. Some victims of hay fever may also have stopped-
up ears. About 30 percent of those who suffer from hay fever may develop the symptoms
associated with periodic asthma or a sinus infection. The allergen-antibody theory does not fully
explain allergic reactions because the membranes and glands in eyes and ears are controlled by the
independent nervous system, which keeps these organs in balance. But the independent nervous
system itself is part of the emotional- response center and may cause the feelings of anger, fear,
resentment, and lack of self-confidence in reaction to allergy-causing substances.
The most common cause of hay fever is the pollen of ragweed, which blossoms during the
summer and autumn. When airborne pollen particles, as well mold, come into contact with the
victim’s membranes, they can cause allergic reactions that release histamine and result in virtual
blockage of air passages. To prevent hay fever or to decrease the severity of its symptoms, contact
with the ragweed pollen should be reduced. Although some communities have attempted to
eliminate the plants that cause the reactions, elimination programs have not been successful
because airborne pollen can travel considerable distances. Antihistamine can help with short but
severe attacks. Over extended periods of time, however, patients are prescribed a series of
injections of the substance to which they are sensitive in order to increase immunity and thus be relieved
of the seasonal allergy.

3. What can be inferred from the first paragraph?
A. Hay fever may cause severe allergic reactions and even death.
B. The cause of allergic reactions has not been determined.
C. The nervous system balances allergic reactions.
D. Peaple should not have an emotional response to allrgic reactions.
4. According to the passage, patients suffering from hay fever may also experience _________.
A. hunger pain B. mood swings C. nervous blockages D. sensory perceptions
5. The word “resentment” is closest in meaning to __________.

Part 4. Read the following passage and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each of the following
questions. Write answers in YOUR ANSWER part.
The search for alternative sources of energy has led in various directions. Many communities are
burning garbage and other biological waste products to produce electricity. Converting waste products to
gases or oil is also an efficient way to dispose of wastes.
Experimental work is being done to derive synthetic fuels from coal, oil shale, and coal tars. But to
date, that process has proven expensive. Other experiments are underway to harness power with giant
windmills. Geothermal power, heat from the earth, is also being tested.
Some experts expect utility companies to revive hydroelectric power derived from streams and
rivers. Fifty years ago hydroelectric power provided one third of the electricity used in theUnited States,
but today it supplies only four percent. The oceans are another potential source of energy. Scientists are
studying ways to convert the energy of ocean currents, tides, and waves to electricity. Experiments are
also underway to make use of temperature differences in ocean water to produce energy.
1. Which is the best title of the passage?
A. Efficient ways of Disposing of Waste B. The Use of Water Productions for Energy
C. The Search for Alternative Source of Energy D. New Discoveries in Geothermal Power
2. Which of the following is NOT memtioned in the passage as an alternative source of enerrgy ?
A. Burning of garbage electricity B. geothermal power
C. synthetics fuels D. Electricity
3. According to the author, the impractically of using coal, oil shale and coal tars as sources of energy is

B. Synthetic fuels will be principal source alternative energy.
C. Alternative energy will come from a variety of source.
D. All alternative production of energy will be delivered from water.
