Introduction

In order that newly appointed consultants become effective quickly, this course has been designed for Specialist
Registrars in their final two years of training. Primarily for trainees from NHSE Thames Valley, this non-residential two
day course provides an awareness of the skills needed in management, particularly as a newly appointed consultant.
Designed to give an insight into NHS management on both a local (Thames Valley) level alongside a national
perspective, as well as the organisation of the NHS, the course also provides the opportunity to develop a range of
practical skills such as the process of applying for consultant posts (application, interviews), job planning, leadership
skills and the current direction of travel of the NHS.

Course Structure

• 2 day live webinar – Day 1 and Day 2 timings: 10am – 12.30pm and 2pm – 4.30pm.
You must be available for day 1 and day 2 to complete the course

• Dates available for 2024 - 2025: 29th and 30th May, 18th and 19th September, 30th and 31st October, 12th and
13th March 2025

Course Objectives

• Understand the current challenges and future strategies for the NHS, finance and business planning
• Understand the role of the CQC and other national bodies
• Considering the future of health care in the UK
• Review the Consultant Appointment Process: Role of the AAC; Preparing your CV; and reviewing interview
questions
Webinar objectives day 2:
• Explore the nature of Leadership in the NHS using the Healthcare Leadership Model.
• Understand the differences and requirements of great management and leadership.
• Grow your self-awareness through the MiRo psychometric.
• Explore a model for developing team performance.
