The verb to have

The verb to have can be a main verb that is used to talk about possessions, family/friends,
physical appearance and illness:

I have a house.
She doesn’t have a brother.
Do you have brown eyes?
He has a headache.

With third person singular subjects, the main verb is conjugated to has and the
auxiliary verb is conjugated to does(n’t). We use have and do with all of the other subjects.

Possessive ‘s

To talk about relationships between people and things we can use possessive ‘s.
It is attached to a possessor noun that is positioned before the possessed noun.
We use the question word whose to ask about possessions:

My sister’s eyes are green.


Her father’s name is David.
Whose house is it? It is my girlfriend’s house. / It is my girlfriend’s.
It is my parents’ car.
He is James’(s) boyfriend.

The possessive ‘s looks and sounds the same as the s in contractions of is:

Her father’s name’s David.


He’s my brother’s boyfriend.

The phonemes /s/, /z/ and /ɪz/

Laura’s parents’ house is really big.

/ə/ /z/ /t/ /s/

St James’s Park is in London.

/z/ /ɪz/

To know which sound to use look at the sound before.


1. If it’s a vowel or voiced consonant, use /z/.
2. If it’s voiceless consonant, use /s/.
3. If it’s /s/ or /z/, use /ɪz/. This adds an extra syllable.
