SECTION 1 - INTRODUCTION
This Manual covers installing, using and maintaining the Model WS5E-3 Electric Impact Wrench.

Description
The WS5E-3 Electric Impact Wrench removes and installs Track Shoe Bolts – the bolts holding the Track
Pads (also called Track Shoes or Grouser Pads) to the Track Chain.

Mounted on a carriage, the Wrench moves along the entire length of a conveyor system, allowing access to
all of the Track Shoe Bolts on an entire crawler track.

Available carriages adapt the Wrench to the conveyor systems of all popular Track Presses.
The Impact Wrench can also be ordered with a Free-Standing Conveyor System for maximum productivity.

Sockets
Always use proper impact-rated sockets and extensions (and to use them correctly) when servicing track.
Impact-rated sockets and extensions for all track models are available from WTC Machinery Corporation.

Machinery Corporation WS5E-3 Electric Impact Wrench INSTALLATION

SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION -

A) LOCATION

Whether adding a WS5E-3 Electric Impact Wrench to an existing Track Press Conveyor, or locating
a Free-Standing Impact Wrench / Conveyor, check for clearance above and on both sides of the
conveyor.

The minimum clearance above the conveyor's side-rail center-line is 55 inches (1,40 m)

The minimum clearance on the sides of the Wrench is 26 inches (0,66 m) from the conveyor's
center-line, although allowing at least 50 inches (1,27 m) is preferred, as it preserves a walkway
past the Wrench.

B) MOUNTING

NOTE: In some cases, adapting the WS5E-3 Electric Impact Wrench to existing conveyor systems
requires the addition of outer rails and widened support stands.
Contact WTC Machinery Corporation for help installing the Wrench to existing equipment.

Once the conveyor system is set up, locate

and remove the stop blocks at the end of the
conveyor system.

Raise the Impact Wrench with a crane or

other lifting device rated for 1000 pounds
(450 kg).
Stop Block
Guide the Wrench onto the conveyor system's
outer rails, placing the Wrench Carriage's
vertical wheels between the outer rail's upper
and lower webs. Conveyor System

After the Wrench is completely on the

conveyor, disconnect it from the lift and re- Stop Block
install the stop blocks.

Move the Wrench along the length of the

conveyor system. Mark and remove any
obstructions that prevent the Wrench from
traveling freely along the conveyor's length.

C) ELECTRICAL CONNECTION

DANGER!
Electricity kills! All electrical work should only be done by qualified personnel.
All electrical connections must be made in accordance with the U.S.A. National Electrical Codes.
Outside the U.S.A., local codes and ordinances must be followed and adhered to.
Always follow company Lockout/Tagout Program. If none exists, consider starting one.

Choose a suitable location for the WS5E-3 Electric Impact Wrench's Motor Starter. Typically, this is on a
wall near to one end of the conveyor system. The Starter should be positioned so the cables from the
Starter to the Wrench are not at risk of being cut, crushed, burned, or tripped over. One method of keeping
the cables out of harm's way is shown below.

Clearance to Suit
Approx. 48" (1,22 m)

"S" Hooks Support Post

Support Post Steel Cable

Buttress Power & Control Buttress Cross-Ties

Clearance to Suit WS5E-3 Electric
Approx. 96" (2,44 m) Cables
Impact Wrench

The cables are suspended from a steel (aircraft) cable using "S" hooks to allow the cables to slide along with
the Impact Wrench. The steel cable is supported at both of the ends of the Conveyor system. The Support
Posts, Cross-ties and Buttresses are sized to carry the load of the electrical cables and "S" hooks and the
tension of the steel cable.

The electrical supply to the Wrench's Motor Starter should have a lockable disconnect (usually a shutoff or
plug and socket set) and over-current protection (usually fuses or circuit breakers.) These devices should be
sized for the voltage and current supplied to the Wrench.

Verify the supply voltage matches the wrench's voltage, as shown on the voltage sticker on the front of the
Motor Starter. If the voltages match (within 5%) connect the electrical supply to the Motor Starter.

Once all electrical connections are complete, rotate the motor by pressing either of the push buttons near
the impact head. Typically, the left push button is used to loosen bolts (turning the impact head counter-
clockwise when viewed from above) and the right push button tightens bolts (turning the impact head
clockwise.)

If the wrench turns opposite of this, or the operator prefers the left push button to tighten, turn off electrical
power to the Wrench, swap any two of the input power leads to the Motor Starter, and reconnect the power.

The Impact Wrench is ready for operation.

5
Machinery Corporation WS5E-3 Electric Impact Wrench USING THE IMPACT WRENCH

SECTION 4 - USING THE IMPACT WRENCH

WARNING!
The WS5E-3 Electric Impact Wrench generates loud noises.
Spinning bolts and impact sockets carry risks of snagging clothing and can create flying debris.
Always wear eye protection and hearing protection when operating the Impact Wrench.
Always keep clear of impact sockets and bolts while the impact head is in motion.

GENERAL APPROACHES TO TRACK REPAIR -

There are two techniques for track repair -
Complete Disassembly, and the "Pads On" or Track Chain Identification
"Two-Bolt Turn" method. The best method to use
depends on the operator's preference, the type and Track Pad
size of the track and especially on the service (Grouser Pad)
guidelines of the track manufacturer. (Track Shoe)

The Complete Disassembly technique differs from

Pin
the "Two-Bolt Turn" method in that all of the bolts Track Chain
holding the pads are removed, and the pads are
separated from the track chain.

In the "Two-Bolt Turn" method, only the bolts on Track Link

one side (typically, the right side) of the pad are Pin and Bushing Set
removed. The pads remain attached to the left Bushing
track link.

Shift the Winch's clutch handle back to its engaged position. Start the Track Press, and lift up on the
Winch Control handle. Pull the track chain to a convenient position for removing the track pads.

REMOVING THE TRACK PADS -

NOTE: If using the "Two-Bolt Turn" method, remove only the left hand bolts from the track chain.
If the track chain is being completely disassembled, remove all the track pad bolts.

Before removing the track pad bolts, clean dirt from around the bolt heads, and inspect the condition
of the track pad bolts. Badly worn bolts, which don't have enough flats for the impact socket grip,
should be torched off.

CAUTION!
Badly worn Track Pad bolts may not offer adequate flat surfaces for the impact socket to grip.
Using the WS5E-3 to loosen badly worn bolts may damage the impact socket.
These bolts should be removed with a cutting torch.

Select the proper impact-rated socket for the Impact Wrench

track pad bolts, and impact-rated extension
if needed.
If the Wrench is not level, either turn the
Height Adjustment Handle to bring the
Wrench level, or add an extension bar Height Adjustment Handle
Extension
between the impact head and the socket.

REMOVING THE TRACK PADS - (CONTINUED)

CAUTION!
Always adjust the height of the Impact Wrench and/or use a proper impact-rated extension to keep the Impact Wrench level.
Using the WS5E-3 while tilted damages impact sockets and bolt heads.

Once the height is set, move the Impact

Wrench onto the first bolt. Hold the nut with
a properly sized track wrench, and loosen
the bolt by pressing the Loosen Push
Button.

Run the Impact Wrench in three-second

bursts until the bolt breaks free. If the bolt
doesn't break free after several attempts, it
Track Wrench
should be cut off with a cutting torch.

CAUTION!
Large and severely rusted bolts can exceed the maximum torque of the WS5E-3 Electric Impact Wrench (5000 foot-pounds).
The Wrench develops maximum torque rapidly, so never attempt to loosen a bolt for more than 3 seconds bursts.
Running the Wrench for longer bursts will not loosen the bolt, and greatly increases the wear on the Impact Head.

Once the bolt is broken free, continue loosening the bolt until it is removed. Move the Impact
Wrench to the next bolt and repeat until all of the rack pad bolts are removed.

INSTALLING THE TRACK PADS -

NOTE: Always read and follow manufacturer's recommendations for track re-assembly.

When the track chain is re-assembled and laid out on the conveyor system, place the track pads
back on the track chain.

Inspect the track pad bolts and discard any with damaged heads or threads. Lightly oil the bolts and
insert them through the track pad and track chain. Start the nuts onto the bolts.

Move the Impact Wrench onto the first bolt and place the track wrench on the nut.

Press the Tighten Push Button to tighten the bolt. How long to run the wrench to get the correct
torque is a matter of operator experience. At least the first few bolts and the last bolt should be
checked with a torque wrench against the manufacturer's recommended torque specifications.

Continue tightening the remaining track pad bolts on the track chain.
