Lab 9
Torque

Lab Assignment
Directions: Fill in the information, generate the plot, and answer the questions. On Brightspace, submit
your Excel workbook with the plot and either a .docx or .pdf file with the answers to the questions.

Complete the following information: (1 mark)

Distance from shoulder to object (m)

0.60
Length from shoulder joint to ulnar styloid (m) Distance from shoulder to arm COM (m)

0.52 × 0.53 =
0.28
Mass of object (kg)

10
Your body mass (kg) Mass of arm (kg)

100 × 0.05 = 5
1. Create a graph of deltoid force vs. shoulder angle. The graph will have the following formatting
requirements. (5 marks)
• present the graph with straight lines only connecting data points but NO markers for data points
• plot the shoulder angle in degrees on the x-axis
• plot the deltoid force in Newtons on the y-axis
• include a title at the top of the chart labelled “Deltoid Force vs. Shoulder Angle”
• include axis titles with appropriate titles and units
• set the minimum value of the x-axis to 0 and the maximum value of the x-axis to 180
• set the minimum value of the y-axis to 0 and set the maximum value of the y-axis to a value such
that the data fills the y-axis
• express the x-axis and the y-axis to zero decimal places
• label (with text and an arrow) where the force in the deltoid muscle is the highest, include in the text
the highest value of the force in Newtons and the angle in degrees at which the highest force occurs

2. For this lab, if you increased the distance from the glenohumeral joint to the insertion of the deltoid
while keeping other factors the same, would the force required in the deltoid to keep the arm in
static equilibrium increase, decrease, or stay constant? Why? (1 mark)

Did you answer this using ChatGPT or another AI tool?  Yes  No If yes, complete the Lab 9 appendix.
the force required would decrease because the torque needed to keep the arm in equilbirium is the same; and if the force of deltoid acting
on the joint is further away from it the force is required is less.
T=fd
T=100
100 = fd
if d is originally 4 then force is 25
but if d increase to 5 the force decreases to 20
3. Which of the following would cause a larger increase in the force required in the deltoid to hold the
arm in static equilibrium: Increasing the mass of the object being held by 1 kg or increasing the mass
of the limb by 1 kg? Why? (1 mark)

Did you answer this using ChatGPT or another AI tool?  Yes  No If yes, complete the Lab 9 appendix.
increasing the mass of the object because the force which is furthest away from the
pivot point has the most torque and can use less force compared to the mass of the
limb whos center is much closer to the pivot point.

4. A person is performing the bent-over row exercise shown here that involves rotating a weighted
barbell about a pivot point. Based on the principles of torque, identify and explain two different
ways that the athlete could make this exercise more challenging. (1 mark)

move closer to pivot point: there is more force required
since the distance is shortened.

increase the weight: more force is required

more force required = more challenging

5. The vastus lateralis is part of the quadriceps femoris muscle. The muscle’s origin is on the upper part
of the femur and its insertion is on the patella, which is connected to the tibia by the patellar
tendon. Can the vastus lateralis generate torque about just the hip joint, about just the knee joint,
or about both the hip and knee joints? Explain your answer. (1 mark)
Did you answer this using ChatGPT or another AI tool?  Yes  No
If yes, complete the Lab 9 appendix.
just the knee joint. the muscle does not articulate around
the hip and originates just below the hip. without any
relation to the hip it can not have any effect on its
movement.
