Lohri is one of the major festivals celebrated mainly in the states of

Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, and a few parts of Himachal Pradesh. This year
the lohri festival will be celebrated on the 14th January.

People celebrate this harvest festival all over the country in different
names as Lohri in Punjab, Makar Sankranti in West Bengal, Bihu in
Assam, and as Pongal in Tamil Nadu.

On the occasion of Lohri, people rejoice, sing, and dance around a bonfire
and narrate traditional folklores. Recipes apt for Lohri festival are also
prepared and relished with family and friends.

Lohri Customs and Rituals:


 Huge bonfires are lit in the evenings and people come together for
celebration, perform parikrama around the bonfire and throw
popcorns, puffed rice, and munchies into the fire.
 While throwing the munchies into the fire they hail "Aadar aye
dilader jaaye" (May honor come and poverty vanish!), and also sing
different folk songs to seek the blessings of Agni dev for prosperity
and abundance.
 People exchange gifts and greetings and gifts with family and
friends, and distribute prasad that comprises of five items mainly:
gajak, til, gajak, popcorn, jaggery, and peanuts. Special winter
cuisines are served and savored around the bonfire such as makke-
ki-roti and sarson-ka-saag.
 On the day of Lohri, everyone get dressed up in their traditional
attires, the Newly-weds wear jewellery, and the new-borns are gifted
little combs.
 Some of them also throw sugarcane sticks into the fire and a
mesmerizing aroma spread in the atmosphere. With fireworks and
dazzling sparklers, the entire environment gets lit up.
 On this special occasion, parents distribute gifts to their newly
married daughters.
