Admin-specific best practices

Striving for administrative greatness?

Here’s a suggested list of activities that will help you become the best administrator
you can be—and some tips on how to get started. Print it out, reference frequently,
and share it as you continue maturing in your role as a JIRA Admin.
ADMIN-SPECIFIC BEST PRACTICES

Atlassian certification commitment required •••••

Think you’re already an Atlassian Pro? Prove it. Atlassian offers a unique opportunity
for administrators to earn a variety of Atlassian Certifications and Badges. These are
more than just badges of honor—they have the power to unlock more opportunities
and advance your career path. Certification hones your skills to a new level, allowing
you to optimize Atlassian products for your team, so they can do their best work.

Participating in community/AUGs commitment required •••••

Atlassian User Groups are an amazing opportunity for you to come together with
your peers to network, share ideas, solve problems, and find new ways to use
Atlassian products. Learning through others’ use cases, victories (and mistakes) is
an important way to mature your own instance of JIRA Software. Check to see if
there is already a group in your corner of the world.

Atlassian training commitment required •••••

No matter your skill level, the trainings offered through Atlassian University can help
elevate the knowledge level of novices and experts alike. All classes (live and online
versions) include your own lab environment, making it much more hands-on than a
typical training. Part 2 of our JIRA Administration series is more advanced, going
deeper on how to map your own team processes and customize your instance.

Streamline upgrades commitment required •••••

If you have a large instance, we recommend maintaining a single reference page that
documents the upgrade process. Keeping it to one page increases the chances it will
stay updated, and having your process well-documented provides a contingency plan
if the designated JIRA Software admin is away at upgrade time. Additionally, add-ons
are great, but they can require you to increase/expand the scope of a large upgrade.
Try tracking add-ons and their business owner, as well as a test plan for them. Taking
ownership of corralling the necessary stakeholders and documenting the process
facilitates a more seamless experience for everyone.

Contribute to Atlassian Answers commitment required •••••

Being an Atlassian user and administrator makes you a part of a larger community. A
huge reason that people love Atlassian products is the built-in worldwide network of
fellow Atlassian members around the world. Whether posting a question, or a solution,
we encourage you to get involved with Atlassian Answers. You can get your toes wet
by first following topics, upvoting answers. Involvement is rewarded with points!

Contacting support commitment required •••••

Atlassian Support helps remove roadblocks during implementation, and throughout

your lifetime as an Atlassian user (while on active maintenance). We want you to
engage with us, whether it’s a tactical question, or a feature request. For hands-on
assistance, we offer Premier Support that allows you to talk directly to our most
senior support engineers—highly experienced at running Atlassian products at scale.
Pro Tip: The Atlassian Support Tools Plugin helps create support requests in a few clicks.
