1. Understanding your learners is crucial to delivering an effective lesson. How

does classroom observation help in understanding your learners better and aid in
the teaching process?

Classroom observation can be thought of as a tool to ensure that the students are
well-involved and are learning effectively.
Understanding the learners and their needs is an important aspect of classroom
teaching and planning. It involves making decisions about teaching and assessment
by observing learner characteristics, including their level of attainment, age,
interests, group dynamics, motivation to learn, educational, sociocultural, and
linguistic background, any special educational needs they may have, level of
autonomy, and personality. Understanding that these diversities contribute to
multiple intelligence in the classroom helps teachers tailor suitable teaching
methods.
As a teacher, it is my responsibility to identify individual strengths and weaknesses in
crucial times. For example, if a student is not engaging in my class, I would want to
pay more attention to that student and figure out the issue he is facing. It is
important to understand whether the student is simply disinterested in the subject,
or his disengagement is associated with some psychological factors. Either way, it
may be solved by trying to encourage him more and get him more involved in the
lesson. Classroom observation aids in understanding how students interact with
each other and with the learning environment.
Observation can be beneficial in evaluating the effectiveness of the scaffolding
strategies to identify areas where the teacher may need to make adjustments. It can
help us to reflect on our own teaching practice and to identify areas where we need
to improve. Suppose a greater number of students are not participating or engaging,
it is better to assume that there needs to be an alteration in teaching methods. To
increase student engagement, student activity needs to be increased. Breaking up
the lecture with learning activities would make them engaged and comprehend the
lesson better. Asking the students to do something with the knowledge and skills
they have learned would instill in them a sense of responsibility. Since each student
has different levels of comprehension, I would like to customize my lessons by
integrating different student activities in the lesson plan that caters to different
individuals' learning preferences. Sensing the pulse of the class, the instructor can
choose an alternate discourse or try to make the lesson more relatable to the
learners by storytelling.
Thus, observation is a crucial scaffolding strategy because it helps to create a more
inclusive learning environment to bring out the full potential of both teachers and
students.
