ASSIGNEMENT-2

SUBJECT CODE: BTME401-18 (APPLIED THERMODYNAMICS)

DATE OF SUBMISSION 29 APRAIL 2022

1. What do you understand by the term ‘height of the blade’ as applied to a reaction turbine
2. Draw the velocity triangle and combined velocity triangle diagram for reaction turbine
3. The velocity of the steam at the inlet to a simple impulse turbine is 1000 m/s and the
nozzle angle is 20o. the mean blade speed is 400 m/s and the blades are symmetrical. The
mass flow rate of steam is 0.75 kg/s. the friction on the blade are negligible. Estimate (a)
the blade angle (b) the tangential force on the blades (c) the axial trust (d) the diagram
power and the (e) the diagram efficiency.
4. Define the following terms:
(a) Diagram efficiency and (b) stage efficiency
5. A Carnot engine works between pressure limits of 35 bar and 0.7 bar. Find the amount of
work done per kg of steam and the thermal efficiency of the engine
6. Show Rankine cycle on the p-v and T-s diagram and explain the process involved.
