NOTES

Introduction
India is a country with 29 states and 7 union territories. As
there are so many states in our country they all have different
types of lands to grow crops. Some places are really cold,
some are warm, some are dry and some are wet places.
In this chapter we are going to learn more about the crops that
are grown in different parts of our country the food that we eat
in various parts and also about the clothes that are worn in
different occasions, climate and states.
Food
In the northern states people mostly prefer eating wheat but
they eat rice as well. Crops like maize, bajra, and jowar are
commonly eaten in Rajasthan. People also eat jaggery (gur).
In the southern and eastern states rice is a staple food. In the
coastal areas too, people eat rice and use a lot of coconut in
cooking. Pulses of various types are popular all over country.
A vast variety of fruits and vegetables are also grown in India.
Kashmir is mostly famous for apples, cherries and
strawberries. Nagpur in Maharashtra is well known for
oranges. Alphonso mangoes are grown in the Ratnagiri
district of Maharashtra. Goa and Kerala are famous for
coconuts.
Indian food is famous for all over the world and has been
popular because of the use of spices in them. Spices widely
used in Indian food include turmeric, ginger, garlic, coriander,
cardamom, cumin seed, cloves, chillies, fenugreek and
nutmeg.

Indian food is usually cooked in ghee, mustard oil, coconut
oil, sesame oil or groundnut oil. In northern states of India,
people like to use milk and milk products such as curd and
paneer. Makki ki roti and sarson ka saag is a North Indian
delicacy. Gajar ka halwa is a dessert commonly served in
winter. In the southern states, idli, dosa, sambhar, appam and
stew, rasam and payasam are favourite items. Nowadays
many people prefer eating fast food too, i.e, noodles, pizza,
burger, sandwiches and chips etc.
Clothes
The clothes that we wear depend on the climate of the place
where we live, the season and also the occasion.
In the Northern plains, people wear cotton clothes to keep
cool in summer, but in winter they have to wear woollen
clothes to protect themselves from the cold.
Some clothes are commonly worn all over India. The sari,
salwar-kameez, trousers and shirts are worn across country.
But some clothes are worn only by people belonging to
certain regions.
Clothes Worn by Men
Trousers and shirts are worn by men in the cities. In towns
and villages, men prefer to wear more traditional clothes. The
dhoti-kurta and kurta-pyjama are popular in the north and also
in central India. In most states of South India, the men wear
the dhoti. In Kerala, it is known as mundu and in Tamil Nadu
it is called veshti. In Gujarat and Rajasthan, men wear an
angharakha with a pyjama or a dhoti.

Clothes Worn by Women
The sari is the most common item of clothing for women in
India. It is draped and worn in many different ways. Saris
come in many weaves and designs. Women nowadays prefer
to wear salwar-kameez and churidar kurtas. In most cities and
towns, many women wear Western clothes such as trousers
and shirts, t-shirts, skirts and dresses.
Clothes Worn in Different Seasons
Cotton clothes keep us cool in summer. In the rainy season,
we wear clothes made of synthetic fabrics. We also use
umbrella and raincoats to keep us dry. In winter, we cover
ourselves in warm clothes such s shawls, pullovers, sweaters,
and scarves- all made of wool or some thick fabric. On special
occasions such as weddings and festivals, people wear clothes
made of silk.
We find such clothes nowadays in textile museum and
emporium.
