SECTION  B

21. (a) Why does the electric field inside a dielectric decrease when it is placed in an
external electric field?
(b) A parallel plate capacitor with air between the plates has a capacitance of 8 pF.
What will be the capacitance if the distance between the plates be reduced by half
and the space between them is filled with a substance of dielectric constant K = 6?

Three point charges of +2C, –3C and 3C are kept at the vertices, A, B and C
respectively of an equilateral triangle of side 20 cm as shown in the figure. What should
be the sign and magnitude of the charge to be placed at the mid-point (M) of side BC so
that the charge at A remains in equilibrium?

22. A charge ‘q’ moving along the X-axis with a velocity  is subjected to a uniform
magnetic field B acting along the Z-axis as it crosses the origin O.

(i) Trace its trajectory.


(ii) Does the charge gain kinetic energy as it enters the magnetic field? Justify your
answer.

23. Two cells E1 and E2 in the given circuit diagram have an emf of 5 V and 9 V and internal
resistance of 0.3 and 1.2 respectively.

Calculate the value of current flowing through the resistance of 3.

24. A jet plane is traveling west at 450 ms–1. If the horizontal component of earth’s magnetic
field at that place is 4 x 10–4 Tesla and the angle of dip is 30°, find the emf induced
between the ends of wings having a span of 30 m.

25. An alternating voltage of frequency f is applied across a series LCR circuit. Let fr be the
resonance frequency for the circuit. Will the current in the circuit lag, lead or remain in
phase with the applied voltage when (i) (ii) Explain your answer in each
case.

26. In the figure given below, a bar magnet moving towards the right or left induces an e.m.f.
in the coils (1) and (2). Find, giving reason, the directions of the induced currents
through the resistors AB and CD when the magnet is moving (a) towards the right, and
(b)towards the left.

27. Give the logic symbol for an AND gate. Draw the output wave form for AND gate for

Draw a ray diagram of an astronomical telescope in the normal adjustment position.

SECTION  C

28. A 20F capacitor is charged by a 30 V dc supply and then connected across


an uncharged 50F capacitor. Calculate (i) the final potential difference across the
combination, and (ii) the initial and final energies. How will you account for the difference
in energy?

29. Potentiometer wire, PQ of 1 m length is connected to a standard cell E1. Another cell, E2
of e.m.f. 1.02 V is connected as shown in the circuit diagram with a resistance ‘r’ and a
switch, S. With switch, S open, null position is obtained at a distance of 51 cm from P.
Calculate
(i) potential gradient of the potentiometer wire and (ii) e.m.f of the cell E1. (iii) When
switch S is closed, will null point move towards P or towards Q? Give reason for your
answer.

OR
A galvanometer with a coil of resistance 120 ohm shows full scale deflection for a
current of 2.5 mA. How will you convert the galvanometer into an ammeter of range 0 to
7.5 A? Determine the net resistance of the ammeter. When an ammeter is put in a
circuit, does it read slightly less or more than the actual current in the original circuit?
Justify your answer.

30. (i) State the law that gives the polarity of the induced emf.
(ii) A 15.0 F capacitor is connected to 220 V. 50 Hz source. Find the capacitive
reactance and the rms current.

32. Explain, with the help of a circuit diagram, how the thickness of depletion layer in a p-n

33. Draw a graph to show the variation of the angle of deviation 'D' with that of the angle of
incidence 'i' for a monochromatic ray of light passing through a glass prism of refracting

35. Two point charges q and –q are located at points (0, 0, –a) and (0, 0, a) respectively.
(a) Find the electrostatic potential at (0, 0, z) and (x, y, 0)
(b) How much work is done in moving a small test charge from the point (5, 0, 0) to
(–7, 0, 0) along the x-axis?
(c) How would your answer change if the path of the test charge between the same
points is not along the x-axis but along any other random path?

(d) If the above point


 charges are now placed in the same positions in a uniform external
electric field E , what would be the potential energy of the charge system in its
orientation of unstable equilibrium?
Justify your answer in each case.
OR
A capacitor of capacitance C1 is charged to a potential V1 while another capacitor of
capacitance C2 is charged to a potential difference V2. The capacitors are now
disconnected from their respectively charging batteries and connected in parallel to each
other.
(a) Find the total energy stored in the two capacitors before they are connected.
(b) Find the total energy stored in the parallel combination of the two capacitors.
(c) Explain the reason for the difference of energy in parallel combination in comparison
to the total energy before they are connected.

36. State the working of a.c. generator with the help of a labelled diagram.
The coil of an a.c. generator having N turns, each of area A, is rotated with a constant
angular velocity . Deduce the expression for the alternating e.m.f. generated in the coil.
What is the source of energy generation in this device?
OR
(a) Show that in an a.c. circuit containing a pure inductor, the voltage is ahead of current
by /2 in phase.
(b) A horizontal straight wire of length L extending from east to west is falling with speed
v at right angles to the horizontal component of Earth’s magnetic field B.
(i) Write the expression for the instantaneous value of the e.m.f. induced in the wire.
(ii) What is the direction of the e.m.f.?
(iii) Which end of the wire is at the higher potential?

37. What are coherent sources? Why are coherent sources required to produce interference
of light? Give an example of interference of light in everyday life. In Young's double slit
experiment, the two slits are 0.03 cm apart and the screen is placed at a distance of 1.5
m away from the slits. The distance between the central bright fringe and fourth bright
fringe is 1 cm. Calculate the wavelength of light used.
OR
State the condition under which the phenomenon of diffraction of light takes place.
Derive an expression for the width of the central maximum due to diffraction of light at a
single slit.
A slit of width 'a' is illuminated by a monochromatic light of wavelength 700 nm at normal
incidence. Calculate the value of 'a' for position of
(i) first minimum at an angle of diffraction of 30°.
(ii) first maximum at an angle of diffraction of 30°.


