COMMUNICATION

Speech Communication is the study of how people

generate shared meaning through the use of verbal and
nonverbal symbols. Speech Communication majors work
to develop confidence and effectiveness in their public
speaking, interpersonal, and small group communication
skills. The focus is not on preparing students for a
specific job, but rather helping students to develop
interpersonal, organizational, intercultural, and public
presentational skills which will enhance the quality of
their lives across a variety of contexts (e.g., within the
workplace, family, civic and social situations).


ELEMENTS OF
SPEECH
COMMUNICATION

SPEAKER
The speaker is one of the key
elements of the basic speech
communication model. It's the person
who is delivering or presenting the
speech. It is the crucial element in
the speech communication process.

MESSAGE
The message is the most important and
intrinsic element of all speech
communication models. The message is
what the speaker is discussing or the
ideas that were presented to the
audience in a particular topic.
CHANNEL
The channel refers to the
medium through which the
message is transmitted.

AUDIENCE
The receiver is the individual or group
for whom the message is intended. They
play a crucial role in the communication
process as they interpret and respond
to the message.

COMMENT RESPONSE OPINION

FEEDBACK
Feedback from your audience,
conveyed through visual and verbal
cues, helps speakers assess the
effectiveness of their message in real-
time
FORMATIVE FEEDBACK
Formative feedback happens
naturally during communication.
Audience or listener signal
engagement through actions like
nodding.

SUMMATIVE FEEDBACK
Summative feedback is given at the end of
them communication.
It can be conveyed through both
verbal and nonverbal cues.

Every style of speech
differs from every
individual and their
interaction.
SPEECH STYLE
According to Joos (1967), a
speaker's speech style is the
type of language he or she uses,
which is defined by the degree
of formality.
SPEECH STYLE
According to Yule (1985:244),
some communities have their own
style to communicate when they
meet each other, and these
situations are called styles as
stated.

are five speech styles and they
each are dependent on the
degree of formality.

STYLE


INTIMATE
This style is private, which occurs
between or among close family
members or individuals. The
language used in this style may not
be shared in public.


CASUAL
This style is common among peers
and friends. Jargon, slang, or the
vernacular language is used.


CONSULTATIVE
This style is the standard one.
Professional or mutually acceptable
language is a must in this style.

FORMAL
Formal or deliberative style is used in formal
settings.
Lack of listener participation.
Often used in formal situations wherein there
is only one-way communication
prepared in advance and follow strict rules in
word choice and content.

given a SCENARIO to observe the SPEECH
STYLE of the SPEAKERS in the scenario
based on the presentation. REFER TO THE
5 SPEECH STYLES: INTIMATE, CASUAL,
CONSULTATIVE, FORMAL, and FROZEN, to
guide your analysis in determining the
speech style of the speakers.
