Save the Elephant Day 2022: 16 April

Save the Elephant Day is celebrated on April 16 every year to raise
awareness about the dangers elephants face and the various
difficulties they have to overcome to live. Save The Elephant Day
aims to change this alarming trend by educating people about
elephants and the plights they face, encouraging everyone to do
their bit and helping save them from extinction.
The Day is established by the Thailand-based Elephant
Reintroduction Foundation, to spread awareness among the
general people about the significance and consequences of their
actions, or inactions on the future of elephants. According to WWF
data, at present, the population of Pachyderms in India is around
20,000 to 25,000.

Gaganyaan: ISRO signs agreement with France

The Indian Space Research Organisation recently signed an

agreement with the French Space Agency CNES. CNES is National
Centre for Space Studies. CNES stands for SENTRE NESNAL DE
ETOOS SPESIALES Centre National d’etudes Spatiales. According to
the agreement, CNES is to help India in its first Human Space
Mission called the Gaganyaan.
The French Space Agency is to supply with space equipment to the
Indian crew. According to France, these equipment were tested and
are still operating in the International Space Station.
The CNES will also supply fireproof carry bags to shield equipment
from radiation and shock.
Under the agreement, CNES will train Indian flight physicians and
CAPCOM mission control teams in France. The training is to be held
at the CADMOS centre and at the European Astronaut Centre.
CAPCOM is Capsule Communicator. It is the spacecraft
communicator.
India and France share a robust ties in the area of space
cooperation. The first space agreement between the countries was
signed in 1964.

CBIC Chairman releases National Time Release Study, 2022

Shri Vivek Johri, Chairman, Central Board of Indirect Taxes and

Customs (CBIC), presented a set of Time Release Studies (TRS)
conducted by the department.
TRS are essentially a performance measurement tool for assessing
the cargo clearance process of the international trade, as
recommended by the World Trade Organization (WTO) under the
Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) and the World Customs
Organization (WCO).
The National Time Release Study (NTRS) 2022 covered 15 major
Customs formations, including four port categories - seaports, air
cargo complexes (ACCs), inland container depot (ICDs) and
integrated check posts (ICPs), which handle about 80 percent of the
bills of entry (imports documents).

Extreme poverty in India declined: World Bank Report

Poverty in India is 12.3 percentage points lower in 2019 as

compared to 2011. The poverty headcount rate has declined from
22.5 percent in 2011 to 10.2 percent in 2019. According to policy
research working paper of World Bank, Poverty reduction was
higher in rural areas as compared to urban India. Rural poverty
dropped by 14.7 percent while urban poverty declined by 7.9
percentage points during 2011 to 2019.
According to the study, farmers with small landholding sizes have
experienced higher income growth. Real incomes for farmers with
the smallest landholdings have grown by 10 percent in annualized
terms between the two survey rounds in 2013 and 2019 compared
to a 2 percent growth for farmers with the largest landholding.

सोंख्या 2011 में 22.5 प्रदतित से घटकर 2019 में 10.2 प्रदतित हो गई है । दवश्व
बैंक के नीदत िोध कायि पत्र के अनुसार, ग्रामीण िेत्रोों में गरीबी में कमी अदधक
थी। िहरी िारत की तुलना में 2011 से 2019 के िौरान ग्रामीण गरीबी में 14.7
प्रदतित जबदक िहरी गरीबी में 7.9 प्रदतित की दगरावट आई है ।
अध्ययन के अनुसार, छोटे आकार के जोत वाले दकसानोों ने उच्च आय वृस्ि का
अनुिव दकया है । 2013 और 2019 में िो सवेिण िौरोों के बीच सबसे छोटी जोत
वाले दकसानोों की वास्तदवक आय में वादषिक रूप से 10 प्रदतित की वृस्ि हुई है ,

World Hemophilia Day observed on 17th April

World Hemophilia Day is observed globally on 17 April every year.

This day is observed to raise awareness for hemophilia and other
bleeding disorders. The date was chosen in honour of the World
Federation of Hemophilia founder Frank Schnabel birthday. This
year is the 31st edition of World Haemophilia Day.
This year, the theme of the day has been kept as ‘Access for All:
Partnership Policy’.
The day is being held since 1989, which marks the birthday of Frank
Schnabel, founder of the World Federation of Hemophilia.
Hemophilia is a rare disorder in which your blood doesn’t clot
normally because it lacks sufficient blood-clotting proteins /factors.
If you have hemophilia, you may bleed for a longer time after an
injury than you would if your blood clotted normally.

'Abhyaas' for competitive exams

All India Radio News has launched a new weekly interactive

programme, Abhyaas for Competitive Examinations. It is aimed at
reaching out to students and job seekers preparing for competitive
examinations. The programme is in Hindi and is broadcast every
Saturday between 9.30 pm - 10 pm.
Every week a subject is chosen. Students can ask questions through
WhatsApp or email and a guest speaker or expert responds to their
queries. Questions on each subject are selected on the basis of
crowd sourcing from the students across the country. The program
also includes segments like Explainer, Factfile, Examination
Calendar and Question of the Week. The fourth episode of the
program will be aired on Saturday 23rd April.

A new Children’s Book titled “The Boy Who Wrote a
Constitution” has been released

On the occasion of Dr BR Ambedkar’s 131st birth anniversary, a new

book titled “The Boy Who Wrote a Constitution: A play for Children
on Human Rights” authored by Rajesh Talwar, a fact-based drama
on Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar’s own recollections of his childhood
has been released. It is published by Ponytale Books. Talwar’s also
authored books include “The Vanishing of Subhash Bose”, “Gandhi,
Ambedkar, and the Four-Legged Scorpion”, and “Aurangzeb”.
This book conveys to the children about the challenging boyhood
and grown-up years of Ambedkar who had written the Constitution
of India and became India’s first law minister.

INS Vagashir, the sixth and final submarine of the Project-75

Scorpene class submarines, was launched in Mumbai. It has been
built by Mumbai-based Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited-MDL
under the Make in India initiative. In the ceremony, Defense
Secretary Ajay Kumar said that this submarine is a shining example
of self-reliant India. According to MDL, this submarine will be
extensively tested in the investigation operation which will run till
the end of the year. The Vagshir submarine is named after a deep
sea sand fish found in the Indian Ocean.
Earlier, Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj and Vela submarines have been
inducted into the Indian Navy under the Project-75 submarine
program, while the fifth submarine, Vagshir, has been trialled.

World Earth Day, also known as International Mother Earth Day, is

celebrated every year on April 22. World Earth Day 2022 will mark
the 52nd Anniversary of the day since it started being observed in
1970. Earth Day was renamed officially by the UN in 2009 as
International Mother Earth Day.
The theme of Earth Day 2022 is to ‘Invest in our planet’.
Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970. World Earth Day
was earlier decided to be celebrated on March 21, 1970, as the day
one of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Thereafter, US Senator
Gaylord Nelson proposed to hold nationwide environmental
enlightenment on April 22, 1970, which was later renamed ‘Earth
Day.

अोंतराि ष्ट्रीय मातृ पृथ्वी दिवस कर दिया गया था।
पृथ्वी दिवस 2022 की थीम 'हमारे ग्रह में दनवेि' है।
पृथ्वी दिवस पहली बार 22 अप्रैल, 1970 को मनाया गया था। दवश्व पृथ्वी दिवस

Insurance Scheme – PMGKP for health workers fighting COVID-19
extended

The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package (PMGKP), an insurance

policy for health care workers fighting COVID-19, has been
extended for another 180 days. It was decided to extend the
programme in order to continue to provide a safety net for the
dependents of health workers assigned to COVID-19 patients.
A letter to this effect was sent to the Additional Chief Secretaries
(Health)/Principal Secretaries (Health)/Secretaries (Health) of all
States/UTs on April 19, 2022, requesting that they publicise the
event widely among health workers in their respective States/UTs.
The PMGKP was launched on March 30, 2020, to provide Rs. 50 lakh
in comprehensive personal accident coverage to 22.12 lakh health
care providers, including community health workers and private
health care providers, who may have had direct contact and care of
COVID-19 patients and are at risk of being impacted.

गया है । COVID-19 रोदगयोों को सौोंपे गए स्वास्थ्य कायिकताि ओों के आदश्रतोों के
दलए सुरिा जाल प्रिान करना जारी रखने के दलए कायििम का दवस्तार करने का
दनणिय दलया गया।
इस आिय का एक पत्र 19 अप्रैल, 2022 को सिी राज्योों/केंद्र िादसत प्रिे िोों के
अदतररक्त मुख्य सदचवोों (स्वास्थ्य)/प्रधान सदचवोों (स्वास्थ्य)/सदचवोों (स्वास्थ्य) को
िेजा गया था, दजसमें अनुरोध दकया गया था दक वे अपने सोंबोंदधत में स्वास्थ्य
कायिकताि ओों के बीच इस कायििम का व्यापक रूप से प्रचार करें ।
PMGKP को 30 माचि, 2020 को रुपये प्रिान करने के दलए लॉन्च दकया गया था।

West Indies All-Rounder Kieron Pollard announces retirement

West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard has announced his

retirement from international cricket. Pollard, who was the captain
of West Indies’ limited-overs teams, played a total of 123 ODIs
and 101 T20Is. He has been an integral part of the Mumbai
Indians team in the Indian Premier League for several years now
and was retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction in
February this year. He was part of the West Indies team that won
the 2012 ICC WT20 and missed out on his second T20 World Cup
title in 2016 as he missed the tournament due to injury.
Pollard was born in Tacarigua, Trinidad and Tobago, where he was
raised, along with two younger sisters, in a poor home by his
single mother.
After representing Trinidad and Tobago in the 2005 TCL Group
West Indies Under-19 Challenge, he was selected as part of the
West Indies Under-19 cricket team to tour Pakistan.
On 3 March 2021, Kieron Pollard become only the second across
T20 format and overall 3rd player after Herschelle Gibbs and
Yuvraj Singh to hit 6-sixes in an over.
In September 2021, Pollard was named as the captain of the West
Indies' squad for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
Kieron Pollard announced his retirement on social media from all
formats of international cricket during the 15th season of Indian
Premier League.

Govt approves Rs 60,939 crore subsidy for phosphate-based

fertilisers

The Union Cabinet has approved nutrient based subsidy rates for
Phosphatic and Potash, P&K fertilisers for Kharif season-2022.
• The subsidy will cover the period to September 2022.
• India provided a subsidy of 571.5 billion rupees for the previous
12 month period ending March 31.
• A subsidy of Rs 2,501 will continue to be available at Rs 1,350 for
every 50 kg bag of crop nutrient diammonium phosphate in local
markets.
• The decision to increase fertiliser subsidies was taken after rising
crop nutrient prices in global markets, mainly due to supply chain
disruptions after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, increased freight
traffic and rising energy costs.
• Background
• Government is providing Urea and 25 grade P&K fertilisers at
subsidised prices to the farmers through fertiliser
manufacturers/importers.
• The subsidy on P&K fertilisers is being governed by the NBS
Scheme.
• In line with its farmer friendly approach, the Government is
committed to ensure the availability of P&K fertilisers to the
farmers at affordable prices.

According to the ACI Worldwide Report on Real-time

Transactions, India's real-time transactions are ranked first in the
world.

• In the year 2021, India's real-time transactions have grown to

48.6 billion.
• China ranks second after India with 18 billion real time
transactions.

• India's transaction volume is more than seven times that of the

US, UK, Canada, Germany and France combined (7.5 billion).

• Brazil, Thailand and South Korea lag behind India and China in
terms of real-time transactions of 8.7 billion, 9.7 billion and 7.4
billion respectively.

• This research has found that more than half (52.71 percent) of
consumers worldwide use mobile wallets.

• Real-time payment transactions worldwide crossed 118.3 billion

in the year 2021, a growth of 64.5% on a year-on-year basis.

• Reason to increase in real-time transactions

• The rise in the use of digital payments during the COVID-19

pandemic, along with the growth of QR code payments and UPI-
based mobile payment apps among merchants, propelled real-
time payments into 2021.

• Consumers are moving from cash to digital real-time payment

methods, which means that the share of real-time payments in
total payment volume will exceed 70% in 2026.

ISRO's plan to make Venus mission special

About Shukrayaan-I Mission
• Shukrayaan will be India's first orbiter mission to Venus.
• It will be similar to Moon and Mars missions.
• The mission aims to study the surface of the hottest planet in our
solar system.

• Its atmosphere is highly toxic and corrosive.

Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the next census will be
completely digital with 100 percent accuracy.
• The birth and death register will be linked to the census.
• With the electronic process and enumeration of people, the
census will be updated automatically after every birth and death in
the country.
• Shah was inaugurating the new office building of the Directorate
of Census Operations in Assam at Amingaon in Kamrup district on
9th May.
• The digital census will shape the 'policies of the country for the
next 25 years'.
• The 2021 census was delayed due to the Covid pandemic and will
be completed by 2024.
• The new software will have multiple uses as it will be linked to
registration of births and deaths.
• As soon as someone is born, his/her details will be updated in the
software.
• Once that person turns 18, his name will be registered in the voter
list from the census office itself.
• Details like change of residence of people will also be updated
through the software.

• Census involves the process of collecting, compiling, analyzing,
evaluating, publishing and disseminating statistical data about a
population and its characteristics.
• The decennial census is conducted by the Office of the Registrar
General and the Census Commissioner, Ministry of Home Affairs.

• Census is a union subject under Article 246 of the Constitution of
India.

Madagascar: Prasar Bharati, ORTM sign MoU on cooperation and

collaboration in Broadcasting

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation and
collaboration in Broadcasting between Prasar Bharati and ORTM
(Office de la Radio et de la Television) was signed in Madagascar’s
capital Antananarivo. It was signed by India’s Ambassador to
Madagascar Abhay Kumar and ORTM Director-General Mr.
BELALAHY Jean Yves. The ceremony was graced by the Director of
Cabinet of the Ministry of Communication and Culture and
representatives of the Government of Madagascar.
Madagascar National Television (TVM) will broadcast programmes
from internal productions of Prasar Bharati in the fields of culture,
education, science, entertainment, sports, news as well as other
areas of mutual interest. Both sides will explore co-production
opportunities related to matters of mutual interest and will arrange
training for TVM personnel in India. The MoU enters into force on
the date of its signature.
The Indian Ambassador said, the MoU aims at the exchange of
Programmes, exploring co-production of Programmes and
Training and Exchange of Personnel.

कायििमोों के सह-उत्पािन और कादमिकोों के प्रदििण और आिान-प्रिान की
खोज करना है ।
