The Evolution of the Workplace

Today’s work environment differs vastly from the realities faced by earlier generations.
Innovation, change, efficiency and speed are just a few of the ingredients that have contributed
to this unimaginable change in the workplace. In today’s world, an employee must develop
acute skills in order to be successful in the workforce. Communication, adaptability,
understanding of technology and an ability to multi-task are crucial in maintaining
competitiveness in today’s workplace.
Communication has never been as important as it is today. Employees are expected to
successfully synchronize several methods of communication including email, telephone, in-
person meetings, messages, and a variety of other methods. Understanding when to apply
each of these methods, depending on the situation, can surely make the difference between a
successful or a failed strategy in the workplace. Furthermore, the use of languages in the
workplace has become fundamental. In a globalized world, those that speak more than one
language, usually have an advantage, as companies expand beyond their borders and the globe
becomes a single market. Lastly, communication between workplace hierarchies has changed
thus requiring a more interchange among employees, employers and colleagues. There is a
greater exchange of feedback, ideas and methods between workgroups and ranks, making
communication and listening extremely crucial. The days of simply following orders seem to be
an idea of the past.
Adaptability is also a fundamental skill needed to be successful in today’s workplace.
Individuals are expected to constantly adjust to varying situations, in almost a chameleonic
way. The ability to interchange from working with a team to working individually is a skill which
needs to be mastered. This millennium defines itself as a world with no borders, where goods
and service flow freely across the globe. In order to be successful, one must adapt according to
cultural and regional idiosyncrasies and understand cross-cultural work ethics. If one aspires
for success, one must be prepared for these constantly changing environments and react
accordingly.
Nothing has shaped our modern reality more than technology. It permeates everyone’s
professional as well as personal lives. Technology transforms the way business is conducted,
and directly transforms the workplace dynamic. In order to maintain competitiveness, and to
be successful, one must embrace technology and fully comprehend its vast benefits.
Technology changes people’s way of movement, communication, time management, efficiency
and a plethora of other habits. It streamlines the way people work, it allows employees,
regardless of their field, to seamlessly work, communicate, learn and progress. Technology,
when understood and used correctly, even allows individuals to create a more harmonious
work-life balance. It is the key to work and live more efficiently and its mastery is key to one’s
success.
Humans and our environment are in constant evolution. This progression is seen in the
workplace as well. In order to maintain success an individual need to embrace this change, and
understand the skills needed to be successful in this constantly changing world.
Communication, adaptability and a true understanding of technology are fundamental
elements which can launch someone to unimaginable levels of success in the workplace.
