The Philippines' energy industry is primarily dominated by non-renewable resources such

as fossil fuels like coal for example. Non-renewable energy sources have been a great

help in developing the growth of our country. Not only it provides a reliable energy source,

but it also provides a lot of opportunity to our countrymen. However, with the recent trend

over environmental sustainability and people’s concern regarding climate change, there’s

a notable shift underway. Renewable energy is seen as an effective replacement for fossil

fuel as it allows for a cleaner production of energy and shows a promising sustainable

capability in meeting our country’s energy requirements.

This change allows energy industries to research and develop a promising renewable

source that can accommodate the energy needs of our country. Here are some example

companies/industries that are majorly contributing to providing our country’s energy need.

1. Aboitiz Power

“AboitizPower is an energy solutions company that provides dependable power across

the country – and with 49 power generation facilities and nine electric distribution sites –

we provide our customers with reliable and affordable power. “

Aboitiz Power, a subsidiary of the Aboitiz Group, stands as a key player in meeting the

Philippines' burgeoning energy demands. Renowned for its diversified energy portfolio,
Aboitiz Power not only harnesses electricity from traditional, non-renewable sources but

also distinguishes itself through its commitment to renewable energy production.

Specifically, the company's utilization of geothermal and hydroelectric sources

underscores its dedication to sustainable energy practices. Highlighting this commitment,

Aboitiz Power operates two geothermal plants situated in Laguna and Albay, alongside

multiple hydroelectric facilities and solar installations spread across various locations.

These initiatives fall under the umbrella of their Cleanergy Facilities subsidiary,

exemplifying their proactive stance towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and

fostering a smoother transition towards greener, more cost-effective, and environmentally

friendly energy solutions for the nation.

2. Meralco

“Meralco is the largest private sector electric distribution utility company in the

Philippines covering 39 cities and 72 municipalities. Its franchise area of over 9,685 km2

is just 3% of the total land area of the Philippines, but accounts for 55% of the country’s

electricity output. Meralco celebrates 120 years of service in 2023, committed to

providing reliable and affordable energy.”

Renowned as the foremost energy provider in the Philippines, this company asserts its

dominance in Luzon as the premier electrical power distributor, catering to the energy
needs of millions. While their energy mix encompasses various sources, their reliance on

coal power plant is still their main provider, especially the San Buenaventura Power Plant

in Mauban, Quezon. This facility holds the distinction of being the country's first coal plant,

boasting a capacity of 500 megawatts. Noteworthy of its historical significance, the San

Buenaventura Power Plant integrates cutting-edge technologies aimed at mitigating

emissions, aligning with global sustainability objectives. Its strategic location in Quezon

province strategically addresses the energy demands of Luzon, reinforcing the company's

pivotal role in the nation's energy landscape.

3. First Gen Energy Corporation

“First Gen paved the way for the birth of the natural gas industry in the Philippines and

leads in the production of renewable energy. It runs absolutely on zero % coal power,

producing 3,501.4 megawatts of electricity and providing 22,352.4 Gigawatt hours of

clean and renewable energy to the country as of 2022..”

The Santa Rita and San Lorenzo power plants, with capacities of 1,000 MW and 500 MW

respectively, represent two-thirds of the trio of natural gas-fired facilities central to the
monumental USD 4.5 billion Malampaya Gas-to-Power Project, marking the most singular

investment in Philippine economic history. This catalyzed the coming of the natural gas

sector within the Philippines. Employing Siemens 4000F technology, renowned for its

efficiency and reliability in combined cycle gas turbine design, both plants possess the

flexibility to transition to liquid fuel as a contingency measure in the event of any disruption

in gas supply. They also have multiple renewable energy plant scattered across the

Philippines. First Gen Corp have a vast collection of different power plant starting from

their 4 Natural Gas Plant, 5 Geothermal Plant, 2 Hydro Electric, 1 Wind Turbine Plant,

and 2 Solar Plant that provides a total of 3,500 MW of electricity being produced. Just by

looking at their Energy Facilities, you could see their dedication in wanting to provide a

clean energy alternative to our country.
