Instructions: Question No. 1 is compulsory. Attempt any Four questions from
2 to 6.

1. (a) For a parametrized curve on a surface, if covariant derivative of velocity

vector field is zero then the curve is a geodesic. [2.5]
(i) The statement is true and converse is also true.
(ii) The statement is true but converse need not hold.
(iii) The statement is not true and also the converse need not hold.
(iv) The statement is not true but the converse is true.
(b) Choose the correct statement(s) [2.5]
(i) R3 can be considered as a 3-surface in R4
(ii) The two orientations on the sphere x21 + ... + x2n+1 = 9 are N(q) =
(q, 3q ) and N(q) = (q, −3q
)

(iii) In R the vector field X(x1 , x2 ) = (x1 , x2 , −x2 , x1 ) is complete.
(iv) The graph of any function f : R −→ R is a level set of some real
valued function in R2 .
(c) Let S be an oriented n-surface in Rn+1 with orientation N and β =
{v1 , .., vn } be an ordered basis for the tangent space Sp . If β is consistent
with N then it will be inconsistent with −N [2.5]
(i) The above statement is true.
(ii) The above statement is false.
(iii) The consistency of β depends on the dimension of the space Sp as
well.
(iv) The basis under consideration needs to be orthonormal to know its
consistency.
(d) Choose the correct statement(s): for an n-surface in Rn+1 . [2.5]
(i) Spherical image can be a single point.
(ii) Spherical image is always connected.
(iii) Spherical image can be a plane.
(iv) Spherical image can be the whole unit n-sphere.

2. Let S = f −1 (c) be an n-surface in Rn+1 , where f : U −→ R is a smooth

function. Let X be a smooth vector field defined on U such that X | S
(the restriction of X to S) is a tangent vector field. Let α : I −→ U be a
parametrized curve such that α(t0 ) ∈ U \ S for some t0 ∈ I. Can α be an
integral curve of X | S? Justify. [5]

3. Show that the special linear group SL(2) with real entries is a 3-surface in
R4 . [5]

4. Determine the extreme values on the unit circle S 1 for the function g : R2 →
R given by g(x1 , x2 ) = 4x21 + 4x1 x2 + x22 . [5]

5. Give one example, with justification, of a geodesic in the cylinder x21 +x22 = 4
in R3 . [5]

6. Let θ ∈ R, αθ : [0, π] −→ S 2 be the parametrized curve on the unit 2-sphere

S 2 defined by αθ (t) = (cosθsint, sinθsint, −cost). Let p = (0, 0, −1), S 2 be
oriented by the outward unit normal N, and v = (p, e2 ) ∈ Sp2 .
Find the vector field V tangent to S 2 along αθ which is parallel and satisfies
V(0) = v. [5]
