Bangladesh "Energy is essential for development and sustainable energy is essential for sustainable development "- Tim Wirth Bangladesh is facing a tremendous energy crisis and the economic development as well as sustainable development of this country was jeopardized due to the lack of energy resources. Adequate and consistent source of electricity is a key requirement for a constant and successful economic development. Renewable Energy : Renewable Energy is energy derived from natural source that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed. Sunlight and wind, for example, are such sources that are constantly being replenished. Renewable energy sources are plentiful and all around us.
Types of Renewable Energy :
1. Solar Energy : Harnessing energy from the sun using Solar penels. 2. Wind Energy : Generating power from the kinetic energy of the wind. 3. Hydropower : Using flowing water to generate electricity. 4. Biomass: Energy obtained from pants and animals remains. 5. Geothermal Engergy: Extracted from the Earth's internal heat through geothermal power plants. 6. Tidal Energy 7.Ocean thermal Energy State of renewable energy in Bangladesh : Bangladesh's renewable energy policy journey began in 2008. Since then Bangladesh has made small but steady progress. Renewable energy sources in Bangladesh like solar, now take up a larger share of the energy mix. Fossil fuel like natural gas still make up over 65% of power generation. Global climate scope ranks Bangladesh in the 41st position. The SDG goal number seven is to ensure access to affordable, reliable sustainable and modern energy for all. Prospect of renewable energy in mitigating energy crisis in Bangladesh : 1. Solar Energy: Bangladesh's National Solar Energy Action Plan introduced plans to shift its renewable energy policy. 2. Wind Energy : The world is going on fast in the sector of wind renewable energy and a turbine is used to convert wind energy into electricity. 3. Hydro Energy : hydro electricity is a natural renewable source of power and water is utilized for the production of electricity. Proposed future hydro-electricity projects in Bangladesh Name of the river potential of electrical energy in MW Kaptai 100 Shangu 100 Matamuhuri 100 4.Biofuel / Biomass / Biogas : Biogas and Biomass are more popular in Bangladesh. 5. Geothermal Energy : Geothermal Energy is the earth core heat and most renewable clean energy. 6. Atomic Energy : Ruppur Powerplant is the country's first nuclear power plant with 2400 MW.
The advantage of Renewable Energy transition
: Transitioning to renewable energy reduces greenhouse gas emissions, mitigating climate change and its adverse effects. It enhances energy security by reducing dependence on finite fossil fuels, ensuring a more stable and sustainable energy future. Additionally, it promotes economic growth through job creation, technological innovation, and cost-effective energy solutions.
Bangladesh's government efforts to help the
renewable energy sources transition : 1. The government of Bangladesh announced plans to install rooftop systems and also plan to replace fossil fuel transport with more electric vehicles. 2. The government enacted the renewable energy policy on 18 December, 2008 and enacted the sustainable and renewable energy Development Authority - SREDA Act 2012. Challenges: 1. The high initial cost of installation. 2. Lack of infrastructure , knowledge and awareness . 3. Power storage 4. Lack of policies and subsidies 5 Limited resources and absence of advanced technologies, lack of reliable data.
In conclusion, renewable energy in Bangladesh holds
immense potential to address energy challenges, reduce environmental impact, improve access, and stimulate economic growth, but effective policy implementation and investment will be crucial to fully realize these benefits.
