Procedure

1. Gathering of materials

The bamboo was collected from of the researchers barangay . The water is from prk 3 Barangay
Talubangi. Other materials such as faucet , net, match, masking tape, Teflon, solvent and 2 1 liter plastic
bottles were purchased at a local store while the valve and hinge, PVC pipe, coconut husk, dried and
fresh banana leaves clam (from nearby beaches) was randomly collected. The tools used such as
weighing scale, handsaw, machete, hammer, spoon, pot, sack, and safety goggles. 2 glass bottles given
by the researchers adviser.

2. Designing of the Bamboo Water Filter

The bamboo water filter was designed using auto desk application.
3. Collecting of unfiltered water sample

The working area was cleaned and disinfected by cleaning it using 70% ethyl alcohol and
burned the upper area. The faucets was disinfected by using a cotton ball damp with 70% ethyl
alcohol using hold by a tong and burned its tip. Hold the near the tip of the faucet for 30 seconds
and let the water run for 1 minute. Next ,the bottle was rinsed with the water from faucet three
times then collected it using a 1 liter bottle. Close the bottle and taped it with masking tape ,label
the date and time collection. Put in the cooler or styro box with ice to maintain the water quality.

4. Making of Charcoal

With an adult supervision, dug a hole on the ground using a shovel (about 12 inches depth
and 10 diameter) and cut the wood and bamboo using a machete. Then put coconut husk, wood
and bamboo into the hole and burn all the materials using a dried banana leave as a fuel. After all
materials are burned cover it with fresh banana leaves at the top ( making sure that no smoke
can escaped from the hole) and lastly ,cover it with soil, and wait until 2 days to collect it
4.1. Collecting of Charcoal

Dug the hole again and collect the charcoal.

4.2 Making of Activated Carbon Filter Media

The eggshells was washed thoroughly until its clean and boil it. After that, it was filtered
and dried under the sun. After it dried, crush it using a mortar and pestle into a powder form
like and set it aside for that served as the calcium chloride. Next, crush the charcoal for just
an about pea size then make a 50 mL solution of crushed eggshells (calcium chloride ) and
150 mL of water and mix it with the 100g of crushed charcoal, spread it on the baking pan
and bake it for 30 minutes.
5. Making of Crushed glass filter media

Wash the glass bottles thoroughly until its clean, then put it in a sack and crushed it using a
hammer. After crushing , boil it for about 5-10 minutes and store it in a sterilized container .

C.5 Collecting of pebbles Filter media

Collecting the white pebbles and wash the pebbles thoroughly until it is clean. Put it in pot and boil
it for 5-10 minutes and filter it. Next ,drain it under the sun and store it into a sterilized container.
6. Making of Clam Filter Media

Put the clams inside the sack and crushed it using a hammer . Then boiled it for 5-10
minutes, after boiling dry it under the sun until it dried up.

7. Building Bamboo Tank with alternative filter media

Place the Bamboo in a clean surface and cut one culm of the bamboo. Cut 1

node for this will serve as the cover and put a hinge in the cover. Next, clean the side of

the bamboo and make a hole on the cover, at the bottom portion and at the bottom of the

bamboo. Then, insert the faucet in one side of the bottom portion of the bamboo and seal

it using a solvent and Teflon. Cover it with the net inside the bamboo and make a

rectangular hole in the bamboo to make the filter media visible from inside. Cut the

plastic bottle in half lengthwise and cover the rectangular hole with the plastic bottle that

has been cut. Seal it using a sealant and insert the valve in the cover and bottom of the

bamboo. Cover it with a net inside.

Measure 100 grams of all the filter media and place the first filter media which is the

activated carbon(100g) inside the bamboo. Put a net above it to separate it from the next

filter media (crushed glass).

Put crushed glass(100g) filter media. Next, place a net above it. Lasty, put the crushed

clam(100g) filter media and put a net above it and make sure that you leave a space for

the water above.
