Special Notes Regarding SRS Systems on E24 and E30 Chassis

On some E24 and E30 model BMWs, the RxD and TxD lines from the SRS control unit are not integrated
into the 20 pin diagnostic socket found under the hood. In order to diagnose and reset SRS lights on these
vehicles, you must tap directly into the harness coming from the SRS control unit.

Communication troubleshooting

1. If the scanner can't communicate with the control unit, please check the following:

! Does the car have this system installed?

! Ignition ON?
! Is the diagnostic connection okay? Check for a damage to the connector, pin dropouts, broken wires or
corrosion.
! Check power supply at control unit in accordance with the factory circuit diagram.
! Is the control unit installed properly?
! If the control unit is new, check to see that the control unit was coded properly.
! If the car has been jumped or had a power failure, disconnect the control unit and reconnect
after 5 minute to reinitialize the controller.

2. If the diagnostic circuit is shorted to ground or a faulty control unit is in vehicle, the green or yellow LED
light on the scanner will remain on steadily when the scanner is connected to the vehicle diagnostic
connector.

Pin No. on the vehicle function Signal type

3. A faulty control unit can interrupt the diagnosis of other control units. Try removing other related control
units from the CAN bus until the control unit under test responds.

The diagnostic connector is located in the passenger compartment, within 3 feet of the steering column or
in the center console. The most common location is the center console of the dash, near the parking brake
or transmission lever or under the dash on the left or right side of steering column.
Beginning with the 1994 3.2 liter 104 engine and all 1996 and later ML320 Mercedes began to phase in the

The adapter OB91-C4-15H is designed to allow access to the 1994 and later Mercedes models utilizing the
OBD-II Socket J1962 found in the dash.
For 1996 and later Mercedes models without 38 pin diagnostic block use the following adapters with the

The scanner reads fault codes directly from the control unit memory and displays a short description of
each code. When there is no fault in the system, the No fault stored will be displayed on the screen.

CLEAR CODE
After repairs have been carried out. Select the CLEAR CODE function to erase all of the fault codes from
the control unit memory. Most of the systems need to turn-off the ignition key 10 seconds after the clear
function in the procedure.

5. Identification/Rectification of Faults
Identify the data item and fault code related circuit according to the maintenance manual. Carry out
required repair before clearing fault codes.

4. Available Tests
Data Stream
Displays the sensor signals and output information to and from the electronic control unit (ECU). This
information is output in the form of DATA BLOCKS. Each Data Block is generally associated with a
component and supplies the appropriate information on the condition of that component. Specific Data
Block definitions can be found in the Official Factory Repair Manuals for VW and Audi published by Robert
Bentley Publishers Inc. and available from the dealer parts department.
Read Fault Code
The scanner reads fault codes directly from the electronic control unit’s memory and displays a short
description of each code. When there is no fault in the system, the message “No fault stored” will be
displayed on the screen.
Clear Fault Code
After repairs have been carried out. Select the CLEAR CODE function to erase all of the fault codes from
the control unit memory.

22
Basic Setting
This feature is for setting the Base Values for a variety of components when replacing the ECM, throttle
valve controller, engine, transmission, etc.
Adaptation
Allows calibration of learned values, such as, Throttle Position Sensor to Automatic Transmission, Long
Term Mixture Adaptation, Short Term Mixture Adaptation,...etc.
Activation
Allows activation of control components, such as, injectors, solenoid valves (EVAP, EGR, ABS...etc) and
relays.
Single Data Reading
Output the value of a single component for maximum sampling resolution during diagnosis.
Login ECU
Needed for all 1996 and later control units. Use WSC# 01283
Coding ECU
Allows the programming of ECU for the vehicle type in which it is installed.
Example: Passat VR6 Manual transmission 1996 is coded 00000.
Passat VR6 Automatic transmission 1996 is coded 00001.
Identification of ECU
Reads out the hardware numbers, software numbers, ECU type, coding and last workshop to code or work
on the control unit. Necessary when replacing control modules.

5. Identification/Rectification of Faults
Record the fault codes and pertinent information from the Data Stream for these components. Clear all fault
codes.
Perform a test drive to reproduce the fault and rerun the diagnosis with the scanner. Verify all codes and
carry out the repair procedures as outlined in the factory service and repair literature.
