What is It

What is culture?
Culture refers to a group of people's characteristics or way of life,
including language, religion, cuisine, social practices, music, and the arts. The
word "culture" comes from a French term that comes from the Latin "colere,"
which means "to tend to the ground and flourish," as well as "cultivation" and
"nurture."

Beliefs are the tenets or convictions that people hold to be true. It is a state or
habit of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing.

Here are some examples of Filipino beliefs:

• Guests should not open the door while the family is eating because that
family’s good fortune will fly out the door.
• A person with two cowlicks in his hair is said to be mischievous.
• A person who dreams of numbers will win the lottery
• When you dream about a friend wearing white, it means he/she is
getting married.
• When a person breaks an egg and sees two egg yolks, he/she will
become wealthy.
4
Views is an opinion or judgment tinted by the holder’s feelings or biases.

Values are a culture's guide to determining what is right and wrong in society.
Values are firmly ingrained in a culture's ideas and are essential for
transmitting and teaching them. Values assist in the shaping of a culture by
indicating what is good and bad, beautiful and ugly, and should be pursued or
avoided.

One-way societies strive to put values into action is through:

• rewards
• sanctions
• punishments

➢ When people observe the norms of society and uphold its values, they
are often rewarded.
➢ A boy who helps an elderly woman board a bus may receive a smile and
a “thank you.”
➢ A quarterly incentive may be given to a business management who
improves profit margins. People either positively sanction or negatively
sanction specific activities by expressing support, acceptance, or
permission, or by invoking official policies of disapproval and non-
support.
