Introduction

In the context of education, the psychological well-being of


learners has emerged as a critical area of concern. Self-confidence, a
fundamental element of an individual's mental and emotional strength,
plays an important role in social interactions, and overall personality
development. Self-confidence is very necessary for a student to take
risks and engage in the learning activities and those who have self-
confidence they are assured of their abilities and are setting goals for
themselves and work hard to achieve their goals without worrying about
the outcomes (Kanza, 2016). Tripathy & Srivastava (2012) believe that
it is possible that an individual can be very confident in one area of life
and less confident in some other areas of life. Students self - confidence
can change student if he/she enters into the academic environment and it
involves giving learning opportunities to refine the learner academic
skills (Tett, 2000).
According to a study conducted by Abdullah Rahimi, there were 3
major factors that affect student self-confidence. Like students feeling
depressed in the class when they have done something wrong, fear of
making a mistake which others might notice in the class and others
much focus toward them about what they say or do. Furthermore, the
researcher recommends that further research should be done to
investigate the other various aspects that contribute to low self-
confidence of learners.
The lack of self-confidence of learners may not only create
problem but with the institution implementation of the curriculum. In the
light of this Alcantara National Senior High School, a growing
apprehension surrounding the continuous observation of low self-
confidence among Grade 11 learners attention from educators and
researchers alike.
This qualitative study aims to go through the various factors
contributing to the decrease of self-confidence level among Grade 11
learners in Alcantara National Senior High School. By adopting a
qualitative approach, this research tends to understand the exact
experiences and perspectives that impact learners' self-confidence with
regard to their academic environment. Through in-depth interviews,
focus group discussions, and observational insights, the study seeks to
understand the complex interplay of personal, social, and institutional
factors that influence the self-confidence of learners at this crucial stage
of their academic journey.

Statement of the Problem


The intent of this study is to explore the different factors that
contribute to low self-confidence of Grade 11 learners in Alcantara
National Senior High School
1. What are the causes of lack of self-confidence of learners in terms
of;
a) Academic Performance
b) Socialize Skills
2. Why do you think these factors affect the self-confidence of
students?

Significance of the Study


The importance of this study primarily revolves on the need to explore
the underlying factors that contribute to low self-confidence of Grade 11
learners.
The study can be of help to learners with low self-confidence, the study
can offer a sense of validation and understanding, as it highlights the
specific issues affecting their self-confidence. Teachers can benefit by
gaining insights into the various challenges students face, enabling them
to improve their teaching methods and classroom strategies to better
support students with self-confidence. Parents or guardians can benefits
from study’s findings by understanding the specific issues their children
might be facing, enabling them to provide more emotional and
psychological support at home. This insight can help them communicate
more effectively with their children and guide them through challenging
times.
The best significant role that the study might contribute to the school as
a whole is its benefit from the study by identifying issues contributing to
low self-confidence of learners. This information can be used to
implement school-wide programs or policies aimed at creating a more
supportive and nurturing environment for learners and fostering a more
positive learning atmosphere.

Scope and Delimitations of the Study


The study will only focus on the factors that contribute to low self-
confidence of Grade 11 learners in Alcantara National Senior High
School. The informants of the study will be 10 learners from all the
strands of Grade 11. This study will be conducted at Alcantara National
Senior High School.

Definition of Terms
 Emerged- to appear by coming out of something or out from
behind
 Fundamental- serving as a basis supporting existence determining
essential structure or function
 Apprehension- suspicion or fear especially of future evil
 Garnered- to collect something, usually after much work or with
difficulty
 Decreasing- to reduced
 Self-confidence- is an attitude about your skills and abilities
 Psychosocial- pertaining to the influence of social factors on an
individual’s mind or behavior, and to the interrelation of
behavioral and social factors
 Psychological- mental or emotional rather than physical
 Qualitative Approach- is a general way of thinking about
conducting qualitative research.
