The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit

• We pray for the Holy Spirit so that we may receive Him

◦ Luke 11:13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your
children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those
who ask him!”
◦ Acts 8:4 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received
the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, 15 who came down and
prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 for he had not yet
fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord
Jesus.
◦ Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came
on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.
• Spiritual baptism
◦ John 3:5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water
and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
◦ Acts 1:4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from
Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard
from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the
Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
▪ Acts 2:1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one
place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty
rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And
divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other
tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
• To belong to Christ
◦ Romans 8:9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the
Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ
does not belong to him.
• To have unity with God
◦ John 17:11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am
coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me,
that they may be one, even as we are one.
20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through
their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I
in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you
have sent me.
22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be
one even as we are one,
▪ 1 John 3:24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in
him. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has
given us.
▪ 1 John 4:13 By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because
he has given us of his Spirit.
• To know that God is with us
◦ 1 John 3:24 Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him.
And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit whom he has given
us.
• As a guarantee for our salvation
◦ Ephesians 1:13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of
your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to
the praise of his glory.
• To have strength to overcome weaknesses of the flesh
◦ Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from
the law of sin and death. 3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the
flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for
sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of
the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according
to the Spirit.
9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God
dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to
him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the
Spirit is life because of righteousness.
• To understand the truth
◦ John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my
name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I
have said to you.
◦ John 16:13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the
truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will
speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
• The Holy Spirit helps us in prayer
◦ Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know
what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with
groanings too deep for words.

Receiving the Holy Spirit

• Receiving the Holy Spirit is different from water baptism
◦ Acts 19:2 And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you
believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy
Spirit.”
5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And
when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they
began speaking in tongues and prophesying.
▪ They were baptized first, and then they received the Holy Spirit.
◦ Acts 8:14 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had
received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, 15 who came
down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 for he had
not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of
the Lord Jesus.
▪ They were baptized first, and then they received the Holy Spirit.
◦ Even those who receive the Holy Spirit first need to be baptized with water:
▪ Acts 10:45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come
with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out
even on the Gentiles. 46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues
and extolling God. Then Peter declared, 47 “Can anyone withhold water for
baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we
have?” 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus
Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.
• We will speak in tongues when we receive the Holy Spirit
◦ Mark 16:17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name
they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues;
◦ Acts 2:2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing
wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided
tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they
were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the
Spirit gave them utterance.
◦ Acts 10:44 While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all
who heard the word. 45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had
come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured
out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues
and extolling God. Then Peter declared, …
◦ Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on
them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.
• The reception of the Holy Spirit can be observed and heard
◦ Acts 2:33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received
from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you
yourselves are seeing and hearing.
◦ Acts 8:18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying
on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money,
(Simon sinned against God by offering money, thinking that he could buy the gift
of God with money.)

Two types of tongues (Please read 1 Corinthians chapters 12 and 14)

• There is a general gift of tongues (Greek word: dorea, translated as "gift" in
English), which is given to ALL who has received the Holy Spirit.
◦ The general gift of tongues is for our prayers to God. Everyone who has the
Holy Spirit can pray in tongue.
▪ Prayer in tongue is not interpreted into human language. The person who
prays in tongue speaks the mysteries of God.
▪ E.g. The word "gift" in "the gift of the Holy Spirit" in Acts 2:38 is "dorea" in
Greek.
• There is a special gift of tongues (Greek word: charisma, also translated as "gift"
in English), which is given to only a limited number of believers.
◦ The special gift of tongues is for the edification of other believers. The
person prophesies in tongue (speaks sermons or words of edification), and the
tongue is interpreted into human language so it cold be understood.
▪ E.g. The word "gifts" in "varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit" in 1
Corinthians 12:4 is "charisma" in Greek.
• The Corinthian church was confused with the general gift of tongues, and the
special gift of tongues. They thought speaking in tongues without interpretation
(prayers) was the same as speaking in tongues with interpretation (prophecy).

Differences between True Jesus Church and most other Christian churches
(denominations):
◦ Many denominations (different groups of Christian churches) believe that the
believer receives the Holy Spirit when he believes, without speaking in tongues.
◦ They believe there is no need to pray for the Holy Spirit.
◦ Some of them believe the Holy Spirit is received when the person is baptized
with water. They think the two are the same thing.
◦ All these teachings are against what the Bible teaches.
